And Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick. ⁷ Now the downfall of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went unto Joram; for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.

² And Joash did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

²⁰ And the spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said unto them: 'Thus saith God: Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, He hath also forsaken you.' ²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

⁷ But there came a man of God to him, saying: 'O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, even with all the children of Ephraim.

¹¹ And Amaziah took courage, and led forth his people, and went to the Valley of Salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. ¹² And other ten thousand did the children of Judah carry away alive, and brought them unto the top of the Rock, and cast them down from the top of the Rock, that they all were broken in pieces. ¹³ But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote of them three thousand, and took much spoil. ¹⁴ Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and prostrated himself before them, and offered unto them.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

⁴ And he did that, which was right in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done.

⁹ Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the Turning, and fortified them.

¹³ And under their hand was a trained army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.

¹⁶ But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up so that he did corruptly, and he trespassed against the LORD his God; for he went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

⁵ Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Aram; and they smote him, and carried away of his a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. ⁶ For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah a hundred and twenty thousand in one day, all of them valiant men; because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers.

²³ For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him; and he said: 'Because the gods of the kings of Aram helped them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me.' But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

²⁵ But Hezekiah rendered not according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

¹¹ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh with hooks, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

²¹ But he sent ambassadors to him, saying: 'What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war; and God hath given command to speed me; forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that He destroy thee not.'

⁶ Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.

¹⁰ And at the return of the year king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

¹⁶ So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

⁷ He that correcteth a scorner getteth to himself shame, and he that reproveth a wicked man, it becometh unto him a blot. ⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

²² The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and toil addeth nothing thereto.

¹⁰ By pride cometh only contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.

¹⁸ Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.

³ It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife; but every fool will be snarling.

¹⁷ He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife not his own, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

²⁵ He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife; but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be abundantly gratified.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are smitten down with wine! ² Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, as a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction, as a storm of mighty waters overflowing, that casteth down to the earth with violence. ³ The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot;

¹³ And the Lord said: Forasmuch as this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment of men learned by rote;

¹⁰ That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions; ¹¹ Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.'

⁹ They that fashion a graven image are all of them vanity, and their delectable things shall not profit; and their own witnesses see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed. ¹⁰ Who hath fashioned a god, or molten an image that is profitable for nothing?

¹⁹ And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say: 'I have burned the half of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh and eaten it; and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?'

¹ Bel boweth down, Nebo stoopeth; their idols are upon the beasts, and upon the cattle; the things that ye carried about are made a load, a burden to the weary beast. ² They stoop, they bow down together, they could not deliver the burden; and themselves are gone into captivity.

¹⁰ Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying: 'My counsel shall stand, and all My pleasure will I do';

⁵ Thus saith the LORD: What unrighteousness have your fathers found in Me, that they are gone far from Me, and have walked after things of nought, and are become nought?

²³ (9:22) Thus saith the LORD: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;

⁷ Who would not fear Thee, O king of the nations? For it befitteth Thee; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royalty, there is none like unto Thee.

²⁶ 'The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there should be officers in the house of the LORD for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in the collar.

²⁹ In those days they shall say no more: 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' ³⁰ But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

³⁸ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananel unto the gate of the corner.

⁴ Behold, all souls are Mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

²⁰ The soul that sinneth, it shall die; the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father with him, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son with him; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

³⁷ (4:34) Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven; for all His works are truth, and His ways justice; and those that walk in pride He is able to abase.'

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him; ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that God Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that He setteth up over it whomsoever He will. ²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this; ²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy consorts and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified;

¹³ And when Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to King Contentious; but he is not able to heal you, neither shall he cure you of your wound. ¹⁴ For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah; I, even I, will tear and go away, I will take away, and there shall be none to deliver. ¹⁵ I will go and return to My place, till they acknowledge their guilt, and seek My face; in their trouble they will seek Me earnestly:

¹³ Ephraim, like as I have seen Tyre, is planted in a pleasant place; but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the slayer.

² Their heart is divided; now shall they bear their guilt; He will break down their altars, He will spoil their pillars.

⁹ (4:9) Proclaim ye this among the nations, prepare war; stir up the mighty men; let all the men of war draw near, let them come up. ¹⁰ (4:10) Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning-hooks into spears; let the weak say: 'I am strong.' ¹¹ (4:11) Haste ye, and come, all ye nations round about, and gather yourselves together; thither cause Thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD! ¹² (4:12) Let the nations be stirred up, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all the nations round about. ¹³ (4:13) Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, tread ye, for the winepress is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great. ¹⁴ (4:14) Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying: 'Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. ¹¹ For thus Amos saith: Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.' ¹² Also Amaziah said unto Amos: 'O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there; ¹³ but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.'

³ The pride of thy heart hath beguiled thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, thy habitation on high; that sayest in thy heart: 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?'

⁴ Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith.

⁸ Mine is the silver, and Mine the gold, saith the LORD of hosts.

²³ And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

⁴⁵ Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest; behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

³¹ Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

²⁹ And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or wife, or brethren, or parents, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, ³⁰ who shall not receive manifold more in this time, and in the world to come eternal life.

²⁸ to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass.

²¹ Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter; for thy heart is not right before God.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Spirit through Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ²⁶ saying, Go thou unto this people, and say, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand, And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: ²⁷ For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.

²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction:

²⁹ that no flesh should glory before God.

⁴ Concerning therefore the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

²⁰ But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I would not that ye should have communion with demons.

¹¹ in him, I say, in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will,

¹⁹ And my God shall supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

⁹ even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie:

¹¹ But thou, O man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

¹⁷ That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

³ For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts,

⁸ a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.

⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.

⁸ and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, for they stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another. Gird yourselves with humility, for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

¹⁰ And they that dwell on the earth rejoice over them, and make merry, and they shall send gifts one to another, because these two prophets tormented them that dwell on the earth.
