⁴⁰ and saying, "You who would tear down the sanctuary, and build one in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"

³ And the tempter came up and said to him, "If you are God's son, tell these stones to turn into bread!"

⁶ and said to him, "If you are God's son, throw yourself down, for the Scripture says, " 'He will give his angels orders about you, And they will lift you up with their hands So that you may never strike your foot against a stone!' "

⁴ "It is a wicked and faithless age that insists on a sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah." And he left them and went away.

⁶¹ and said, "This man said, 'I can tear down the sanctuary of God, and build it up in three days.' "

⁶³ But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, "I charge you, on your oath, by the living God, tell us whether you are the Christ, the son of God." ⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, "It is true. But I tell you you will soon see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming upon the clouds of the sky!"

⁴² "He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.

⁵⁴ And the captain and the men with him who were watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, were dreadfully frightened and said, "He surely must have been a son of God!"

²⁹ Or else when he has laid his foundation and cannot finish the building, everyone who sees it will begin to ridicule him, ³⁰ and say, 'This man started to erect a building, and could not finish it!'

³¹ He answered, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead!' "

¹⁹ Jesus answered, "Destroy this sanctuary, and I will raise it in three days!" ²⁰ The Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary, and are you going to raise it in three days?" ²¹ But he was speaking of his body as the sanctuary. ²² So afterward when he had risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the passage of Scripture and what Jesus had said.

¹⁰ The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and celebrate by sending presents to one another, for these two prophets were a torment to the inhabitants of the earth.
