¹ The wordes of the Preacher, the sonne of Dauid King in Ierusalem. ² Vanitie of vanities, sayth the Preacher: vanitie of vanities, all is vanitie. ³ What remaineth vnto man in all his trauaile, which he suffereth vnder ye sunne? ⁴ One generation passeth, and another generation succeedeth: but the earth remaineth for euer. ⁵ The sunne riseth, and ye sunne goeth downe, and draweth to his place, where he riseth. ⁶ The winde goeth toward the South, and compasseth towarde the North: the winde goeth rounde about, and returneth by his circuites. ⁷ All the riuers goe into the sea, yet the sea is not full: for the riuers goe vnto ye place, whence they returne, and goe. ⁸ All things are full of labour: man cannot vtter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the eare filled with hearing. ⁹ What is it that hath bene? that that shalbe: and what is it that hath bene done? that which shalbe done: and there is no newe thing vnder the sunne. ¹⁰ Is there any thing, whereof one may say, Beholde this, it is newe? it hath bene already in the olde time that was before vs. ¹¹ There is no memorie of the former, neither shall there be a remembrance of the latter that shalbe, with them that shall come after. ¹² I the Preacher haue bene King ouer Israel in Ierusalem: ¹³ And I haue giuen mine heart to search and finde out wisdome by all things that are done vnder the heauen: (this sore trauaile hath GOD giuen to the sonnes of men, to humble them thereby) ¹⁴ I haue considered all the workes that are done vnder the sunne, and beholde, all is vanitie, and vexation of the spirit. ¹⁵ That which is crooked, can none make straight: and that which faileth, cannot be nombred. ¹⁶ I thought in mine heart, and said, Behold, I am become great, and excell in wisdome all them that haue bene before me in Ierusalem: and mine heart hath seene much wisedome and knowledge. ¹⁷ And I gaue mine heart to knowe wisdome and knowledge, madnes and foolishnes: I knew also that this is a vexation of the spirit. ¹⁸ For in the multitude of wisedome is much griefe: and he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorowe.

¹⁹ In the sweate of thy face shalt thou eate bread, till thou returne to the earth: for out of it wast thou taken, because thou art dust, and to dust shalt thou returne.

²³ So King Salomon exceeded all the kings of the earth both in riches and in wisedome. ²⁴ And al the world sought to see Salomon, to heare his wisedome, which God had put in his heart,

⁴² The time that Salomon reigned in Ierusalem ouer all Israel, was fourtie yeere. ⁴³ And Salomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the citie of Dauid his father: and Rehoboam his sonne reigned in his steade.

²⁰ And Gehazi the seruant of Elisha the man of God sayde, Beholde, my master hath spared this Aramite Naaman, receiuing not those things at his hand that he brought: as the Lord liueth, I will runne after him, and take somewhat of him.

¹⁰ Giue me now wisdome and knowledge, that I may go out and go in before this people: for who can iudge this thy great people? ¹¹ And God sayde to Salomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, treasures nor honour, nor the liues of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life, but hast asked for thee wisdome and knowledge that thou mightest iudge my people, ouer whome I haue made thee King, ¹² Wisdome and knowledge is granted vnto thee, and I will giue thee riches and treasures and honour, so that there hath not bene the like among the Kings which were before thee, neither after thee shall there be the like.

¹² Huram sayd moreouer, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which made the heauen and the earth, and that hath giuen vnto Dauid the King a wise sonne, that hath discretion, prudence and vnderstanding to buylde an house for the Lord, and a palace for his kingdome.

²² So King Salomon excelled all the Kings of the earth in riches and wisedome. ²³ And all the Kings of the earth sought the presence of Salomon, to heare his wisedome that God had put in his heart.

¹⁷ Howbeit Rehoboam reigned ouer the children of Israel, that dwelt in the cities of Iudah. ¹⁸ Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was ouer the tribute, and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died: then King Rehoboam made speede to get him vp to his charet, to flee to Ierusalem. ¹⁹ And Israel rebelled against the house of Dauid vnto this day.

⁷ Thou hast also ordeyned the Prophets to preach of thee at Ierusalem, saying, There is a King in Iudah: and nowe according to these wordes it shall come to the Kings eares: come now therefore, and let vs take counsell together.

⁶ That he might shewe thee the secretes of wisedome, howe thou hast deserued double, according to right: know therefore that God hath forgotten thee for thine iniquitie.

²⁸ And vnto man he said, Behold, the feare of the Lord is wisedome, and to depart from euil is vnderstanding.

²⁹ And when he giueth quietnesse, who can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who can beholde him, whether it be vpon nations, or vpon a man onely?

⁹ The whirlewind commeth out of the South, and the colde from the North winde.

¹⁷ Or howe thy clothes are warme, when he maketh the earth quiet through the South winde?

¹⁰ When I stablished my commandement vpon it, and set barres and doores, ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no farther, and here shall it stay thy proude waues.

⁴ Tremble, and sinne not: examine your owne heart vpon your bed, and be still. Selah.

⁶ O enemie, destructions are come to a perpetual end, and thou hast destroyed the cities: their memoriall is perished with them.

⁴ Their line is gone forth through all the earth, and their words into the endes of the world: in them hath he set a tabernacle for the sunne. ⁵ Which commeth forth as a bridegrome out of his chamber, and reioyceth like a mightie man to runne his race. ⁶ His going out is from the ende of the heauen, and his compasse is vnto the endes of ye same, and none is hid from the heate thereof.

⁵ Beholde, thou hast made my dayes as an hand breadth, and mine age as nothing in respect of thee: surely euery man in his best state is altogether vanitie. Selah. ⁶ Doubtlesse man walketh in a shadowe, and disquieteth himselfe in vaine: he heapeth vp riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them.

⁹ I haue declared thy righteousnesse in the great Congregation: loe, I will not refraine my lippes: O Lord, thou knowest.

¹ To him that excelleth. A Psalme to give instruction, committed to the sonnes of Korah. As the harte brayeth for the riuers of water, so panteth my soule after thee, O God.

⁹ Yet the children of men are vanitie, the chiefe men are lies: to lay them vpon a balance they are altogether lighter then vanitie. ¹⁰ Trust not in oppression nor in robberie: be not vaine: if riches increase, set not your heart thereon.

⁵ My soule shalbe satisfied, as with marowe and fatnesse, and my mouth shall praise thee with ioyfull lippes,

⁶ I called to remembrance my song in the night: I communed with mine owne heart, and my spirit searched diligently.

³⁶ His seede shall endure for euer, and his throne shalbe as the sunne before me. ³⁷ He shalbe established for euermore as the moone, and as a faythfull witnes in the heauen. Selah.

⁴⁷ Remember of what time I am: wherefore shouldest thou create in vaine all the children of men? ⁴⁸ What man liueth, and shall not see death? shall hee deliuer his soule from the hande of the graue? Selah.

⁹ For all our dayes are past in thine anger: we haue spent our yeeres as a thought. ¹⁰ The time of our life is threescore yeeres and ten, and if they be of strength, fourescore yeeres: yet their strength is but labour and sorowe: for it is cut off quickly, and we flee away.

²⁴ And I sayd, O my God, take me not away in the middes of my dayes: thy yeeres endure from generation to generation. ²⁵ Thou hast aforetime layde the foundation of the earth, and the heauens are the worke of thine hands. ²⁶ They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: euen they all shall waxe olde as doeth a garment: as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed. ²⁷ But thou art the same, and thy yeeres shall not fayle. ²⁸ The children of thy seruants shall continue, and their seede shall stand fast in thy sight.

⁵ He set the earth vpon her foundations, so that it shall neuer moue. ⁶ Thou coueredst it with the deepe as with a garment: the waters woulde stand aboue the mountaines. ⁷ But at thy rebuke they flee: at the voyce of thy thunder they haste away. ⁸ And the mountaines ascend, and the valleis descend to the place which thou hast established for them. ⁹ But thou hast set them a bounde, which they shall not passe: they shall not returne to couer the earth.

¹⁹ He appoynted the moone for certaine seasons: the sunne knoweth his going downe. ²⁰ Thou makest darkenesse, and it is night, wherein all the beastes of the forest creepe forth. ²¹ The lions roare after their praye, and seeke their meate at God. ²² When the sunne riseth, they retire, and couche in their dennes. ²³ Then goeth man forth to his worke, and to his labour vntill the euening.

²⁵ For he commaundeth and raiseth the stormie winde, and it lifteth vp the waues thereof.

²⁹ He turneth the storme to calme, so that the waues thereof are still.

² The workes of the Lord are great, and ought to be sought out of al them that loue them.

⁹⁰ Thy trueth is from generation to generation: thou hast layed the foundation of the earth, and it abideth. ⁹¹ They continue euen to this day by thine ordinances: for all are thy seruants.

⁴ Man is like to vanitie: his dayes are like a shadow, that vanisheth.

² And cause thine eares to hearken vnto wisdome, and encline thine heart to vnderstanding, ³ (For if thou callest after knowledge, and cryest for vnderstanding: ⁴ If thou seekest her as siluer, and searchest for her as for treasures,

⁷ Wisedome is the beginning: get wisedome therefore: and aboue all thy possession get vnderstanding.

¹ For the desire thereof hee will separate himselfe to seeke it, and occupie himselfe in all wisdome.

¹⁵ A wise heart getteth knowledge, and the eare of the wise seeketh learning.

⁴ Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome. ⁵ Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.

²⁶ My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.

²⁰ The graue and destruction can neuer be full, so the eyes of man can neuer be satisfied.

¹⁵ The horse leache hath two daughters which crye, Giue, giue. There be three things that will not be satisfied: yea, foure that say not, It is ynough. ¹⁶ The graue, and the barren wombe, the earth that cannot be satisfied with water, and the fire that sayeth not, It is ynough.

⁹ And I was great, and increased aboue all that were before me in Ierusalem: also my wisedome remained with me. ¹⁰ And whatsoeuer mine eyes desired, I withheld it not from them: I withdrew not mine heart from any ioy: for mine heart reioyced in al my labour: and this was my portion of all my trauaile. ¹¹ Then I looked on all my workes that mine hands had wrought, and on the trauaile that I had laboured to doe: and beholde, all is vanitie and vexation of the spirit: and there is no profite vnder the sunne.

¹⁵ Then I thought in mine heart, It befalleth vnto me, as it befalleth to ye foole. Why therefore doe I then labour to be more wise? And I sayd in mine heart, that this also is vanitie. ¹⁶ For there shalbe no remembrance of the wise, nor of the foole for euer: for that that now is, in the dayes to come shall all be forgotten. And howe dyeth the wise man, as doeth the foole? ¹⁷ Therefore I hated life: for the worke that is wrought vnder the sunne is grieuous vnto me: for all is vanitie, and vexation of the spirit.

¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he shalbe wise or foolish? yet shall hee haue rule ouer all my labour, wherein I haue trauailed, and wherein I haue shewed my selfe wise vnder the sunne. This is also vanitie.
