⁴¹ And they turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

²² because all those men which have seen my glory, and my signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

¹⁶ Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

²² Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹ Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Behold, he smote the rock, that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed; can he give bread also? will he provide flesh for his people?

¹⁸ For our shield belongeth unto the LORD; and our king to the Holy One of Israel.

³⁵ While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogue’s [house], saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? ³⁶ But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe.

³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him from them, and turned back in their hearts unto Egypt,

⁸ Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the temptation in the wilderness, ⁹ Wherewith your fathers tempted [me] by proving [me], And saw my works forty years. ¹⁰ Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do alway err in their heart: But they did not know my ways; ¹¹ As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.
