¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: ² To know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; ³ To receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness and judgment and equity; ⁴ To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion: ⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; and that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels: ⁶ To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. ⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: [but] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. ⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. ¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. ¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil; ¹⁴ Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; we will all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: ¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ For in vain is the net spread, in the eyes of any bird: ¹⁸ And these lay wait for their own blood, they lurk privily for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof. ²⁰ Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; she uttereth her voice in the broad places; ²¹ She crieth in the chief place of concourse; at the entering in of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words: ²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. ²⁴ Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; ²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: ²⁶ I also will laugh in [the day of] your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; ²⁷ When your fear cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you. ²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me diligently, but they shall not find me: ²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof: ³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. ³² For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.

²⁴ And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him; ²⁵ and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah, for the LORD’S sake.

¹² And Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.

³¹ For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the nations round about. ³² And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.

⁹ Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days:

⁵ And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.

²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

¹ These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

⁹ And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.

²⁵ These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but shall tell you plainly of the Father.

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it. ⁶ Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

⁹ Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this thy great people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; ¹² behold, I have done according to thy word: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding; forget [it] not, neither decline from the words of my mouth: ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee. ⁷ Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom: yea, with all thou hast gotten get understanding.

⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding [thy] kinswoman:

⁵ O ye simple, understand subtilty; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.

¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?

¹⁵ and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ Every scripture inspired of God [is] also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: ¹⁷ that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee; ² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou cry after discernment, and lift up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom; out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding: ⁷ He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright, [he is] a shield to them that walk in integrity; ⁸ That he may guard the paths of judgment, and preserve the way of his saints. ⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment, and equity, [yea], every good path.

¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto her.

⁷ The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

¹¹ Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁹ Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word.

¹³⁰ The opening of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

¹⁰ For wisdom shall enter into thine heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul; ¹¹ Discretion shall watch over thee, understanding shall keep thee:

²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion;

⁷ And I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, ⁸ Passing through the street near her corner, and he went the way to her house; ⁹ In the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the blackness of night and the darkness. ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and wily of heart. ¹¹ She is clamorous, and wilful; her feet abide not in her house: ¹² Now she is in the streets, now in the broad places, and lieth in wait at every corner. ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, [and] with an impudent face she said unto him: ¹⁴ Sacrifices of peace offerings are with me; this day have I paid my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry, with striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him; he will come home at the full moon. ²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forceth him away. ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. ²⁴ Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me, and attend to the words of my mouth.

¹² I wisdom have made subtilty my dwelling, and find out knowledge [and] discretion.

¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me diligently shall find me.

³² Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him, ⁵ Come, eat ye of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. ⁶ Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; and walk in the way of understanding.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

⁸ And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, yea fools, shall not err [therein].

²² But flee youthful lusts, and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁶ the younger men likewise exhort to be soberminded:

³² And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: ³³ and blessed be thy wisdom, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that [the king] said unto him, Have we made thee of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁶ If now [thou hast] understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

³⁴ Men of understanding will say unto me, yea, every wise man that heareth me:

⁹⁸ Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies; for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers; for thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the aged, because I have kept thy precepts.

⁹ Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹ Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

⁸ with him will I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the form of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?

⁴ I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

² I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old:

¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails well fastened are [the words of] the masters of assemblies, [which] are given from one shepherd.

¹⁰ And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? ¹¹ And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath. ¹³ Therefore speak I to them in parables; because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: ¹⁵ For this people’s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which ye see, and saw them not; and to hear the things which ye hear, and heard them not.

³⁴ All these things spake Jesus in parables unto the multitudes; and without a parable spake he nothing unto them: ³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

⁵¹ Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea. ⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

¹¹ And he said unto them, Unto you is given the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables:

³⁴ and without a parable spake he not unto them: but privately to his own disciples he expounded all things.

³⁰ And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? ³¹ And he said, How can I, except some one shall guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.

¹⁴ But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

¹⁶ as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter: his praise endureth for ever.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof:

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

⁵ A fool despiseth his father’s correction: but he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence.

³³ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour [goeth] humility.

² A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may reveal itself.

¹³ [This is] the end of the matter; all hath been heard: fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole [duty] of man.

¹⁸ He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth ill hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved. ²¹ But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.

²⁸ And even as they refused to have God in [their] knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

³ Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them: ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a riotous liver, and a drunkard. ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

²⁵ If one man sin against another, God shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee;

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

¹ Hear, [my] sons, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding: ² For I give you good doctrine; forsake ye not my law. ³ For I was a son unto my father, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. ⁴ And he taught me, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words; keep my commandments, and live:

¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom; incline thine ear to my understanding: ² That thou mayest preserve discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

²⁰ My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

¹ The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

² And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins are forgiven.

²² But Jesus turning and seeing her said, Daughter, be of good cheer; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

⁵ having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also.

⁴² And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

²² So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

⁹ She shall give to thine head a chaplet of grace: a crown of beauty shall she deliver to thee.

²⁰ My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart, tie them about thy neck.

¹⁰ Thy cheeks are comely with plaits [of hair], thy neck with strings of jewels

⁹ Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, [my] bride; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

¹⁹ the pendants, and the bracelets, and the mufflers;

¹¹ I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck.

⁷ The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spake and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

¹⁶ But I have heard of thee, that thou canst give interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

⁹ In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment; ¹⁰ but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.

³ Whose [adorning] let it not be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel; ⁴ but [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible [apparel] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. ⁸ But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand; ⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, [or] to be with her. ¹¹ And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within. ¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. ¹³ And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

⁸ thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:

¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death. ¹⁷ And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself. But he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

¹⁸ When thou sawest a thief, thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.

²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forceth him away. ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

²⁰ Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise: but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

²⁹ A man of violence enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him in a way that is not good.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.

¹⁸ For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them;

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the covert places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurketh in the covert as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net. ¹⁰ He croucheth, he boweth down, and the helpless fall by his strong ones.

¹² He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net [in] a pit, without cause have they digged [a pit] for my soul.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, even as they have waited for my soul.

⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil purpose; they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; We have accomplished, [say they], a diligent search: and the inward thought of every one, and the heart, is deep.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

¹⁸ And these lay wait for their own blood, they lurk privily for their own lives.

⁶ The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men.

¹⁹ But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, [saying], Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

¹⁸ Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. ¹⁹ Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. ²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy fury from them.

² The godly man is perished out of the earth, and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

³ Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the elders of the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas; ⁴ and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.

²⁵ But [this cometh to pass], that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

¹⁵ Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to slay him.

³ asking favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem; laying wait to kill him on the way.

³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD. ³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: ³² and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

¹⁰ and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died; what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men, and they became a sign.

⁹ For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness: their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

¹ [A Psalm] of David. Unto thee, O LORD, will I call; my rock, be not thou deaf unto me: lest, if thou be silent unto me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

²⁵ Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

¹ For the Chief Musician; set to Jonath elem rehokim. [A Psalm] of David: Michtam: when the Philistines took him in Gath. Be merciful unto me, O God; for man would swallow me up: all the day long he fighting oppresseth me. ² Mine enemies would swallow me up all the day long: for they be many that fight proudly against me.

³ He shall send from heaven, and save me, [when] he that would swallow me up reproacheth; Selah God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.

³ Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us:

⁷ Make haste to answer me, O LORD; my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me; lest I become like them that go down into the pit.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his maw with my delicates; he hath cast me out.

⁵ The Lord is become as an enemy, he hath swallowed up Israel; he hath swallowed up all her palaces, he hath destroyed his strong holds: and he hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

² who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ who also eat the flesh of my people; and they flay their skin from off them, and break their bones: yea, they chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; With their tongues they have used deceit: The poison of asps is under their lips:

² There are that remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

¹³ For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have brought down as a valiant man them that sit [on thrones]: ¹⁴ and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Was not this to know me? saith the LORD. ¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

¹² The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his caves with prey, and his dens with ravin.

⁹ The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

⁹ But they that desire to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived wantonly with her, shall weep and wail over her, when they look upon the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. ¹¹ And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more; ¹² merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet; and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble; ¹³ and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and [merchandise] of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men. ¹⁴ And the fruits which thy soul lusted after are gone from thee, and all things that were dainty and sumptuous are perished from thee, and [men] shall find them no more at all. ¹⁵ The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning; ¹⁶ saying, Woe, woe, the great city, she that was arrayed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearl!

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons; neither will I go in with dissemblers. ⁵ I hate the congregation of evil-doers, and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁰¹ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might observe thy word.

¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and walk not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it; turn from it, and pass on.

²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

⁶ Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; and walk in the way of understanding.

¹⁰ Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Even so have they loved to wander; they have not refrained their feet: therefore the LORD doth not accept them; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

¹⁷ Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you,

¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief;

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation ard destruction are in their paths.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)

¹¹ Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

³ The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: [but] Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

⁷ Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the swallow and the crane observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the ordinance of the LORD.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.

¹⁴ Behold, he travaileth with iniquity; yea, he hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He hath made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁶ The LORD hath made himself known, he hath executed judgment: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higaion. Selah

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁷ A man that is laden with the blood of any person shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him.

⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou [to it]. ⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

¹¹ And Joab said unto the man that told him, And behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [pieces of] silver, and a girdle. ¹² And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand [pieces of] silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. ¹³ Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life, (and there is no matter hid from the king,) then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.

²⁰ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw one running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? ²² And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment. ²³ And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of raiment, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. ²⁴ And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed. ²⁵ But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither. ²⁶ And he said unto him, Went not mine heart [with thee], when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and menservants and maidservants? ²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper [as white] as snow.

³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

²⁷ He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house: but he that hateth gifts shall live.

³ Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful meat. ⁴ Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.

¹³ There is a grievous evil, which I have seen under the sun, [namely], riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt:

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. ¹⁸ Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: They shall not lament for him, [saying], Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, [saying], Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! ¹⁹ He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage. ³ Therefore thus saith the LORD: Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks, neither shall ye walk haughtily; for it is an evil time.

¹⁰ They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. ¹¹ The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us. ¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

⁹ Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil!

¹⁹ saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. ²⁰ But Peter said unto him, Thy silver perish with thee, because thou hast thought to obtain the gift of God with money.

³ no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;

¹ Go to now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted; and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.

¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; ¹⁵ forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing; ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man’s voice and stayed the madness of the prophet.

¹ Doth not wisdom cry, and understanding put forth her voice? ² In the top of high places by the way, where the paths meet, she standeth; ³ Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud: ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men. ⁵ O ye simple, understand subtilty; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

³ She hath sent forth her maidens, she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

⁵⁴ And coming into his own country he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and [some] of them they shall kill and persecute;

³⁷ Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

²⁴ but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

³⁰ But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption:

³ in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.

²⁷ What I tell you in the darkness, speak ye in the light: and what ye hear in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops.

² And there were gathered unto him great multitudes, so that he entered into a boat, and sat; and all the multitude stood on the beach.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.

²⁰ Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.

³ And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.

²⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

²⁷ How long [shall I bear] with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

⁸ Consider, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

⁴ To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion:

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: [but] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

³⁴ Surely he scorneth the scorners, but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

⁷ And I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

¹⁶ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,

⁶ A scorner seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not: but knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.

¹² A scorner loveth not to be reproved: he will not go unto the wise.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

¹¹ When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.

¹³ But go ye and learn what [this] meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

¹⁷ And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him hither to me.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known in this day, even thou, the things which belong unto peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

²⁰ For every one that doeth ill hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

³ knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts,

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely.

¹ [A Psalm of] praise; of David. I will extol thee, my God, O King; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

³⁰ They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof:

²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

¹⁷ He is in the way of life that heedeth correction: but he that forsaketh reproof erreth.

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.

¹⁵ until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

⁸ Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, that they may bring forth salvation, and let her cause righteousness to spring up together; I the LORD have created it.

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ² Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. ³ Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁶ Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: ⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ Return, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am a husband unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²⁹ Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? ³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Return ye, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

¹¹ Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

¹ O ISRAEL, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

²⁸ And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced: and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

¹³ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

³⁶ What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come? ³⁷ Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

³⁶ Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified. ³⁷ Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? ³⁸ And Peter [said] unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

¹⁹ Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord;

²⁰ but declared both to them of Damascus first, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

¹⁶ So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth. ¹⁷ Because thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked: ¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see. ¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

²⁰ In the covert of thy presence shalt thou hide them from the plottings of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

² Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

¹² I will destine you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but ye did that which was evil in mine eyes, and chose that wherein I delighted not.

⁴ I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did that which was evil in mine eyes, and chose that wherein I delighted not.

¹³ And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not:

¹⁸ Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his spirit by the hand of the former prophets: therefore came there great wrath from the LORD of hosts.

⁵ But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise: ⁶ and the rest laid hold on his servants, and entreated them shamefully, and killed them.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! ³⁸ Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

³⁰ while thou stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus.

²¹ But as to Israel he saith, All the day long did I spread out my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

²⁵ See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not, when they refused him that warned [them] on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], who turn away from him that [warneth] from heaven: ²⁶ whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.

¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

¹¹ But my people hearkened not to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

¹¹ Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the Most High:

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him.

¹⁴ Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.

⁴ He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.

¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; on a sudden shall he be broken and that without remedy.

²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: and the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

²⁴ For I say unto you, that none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

⁹ Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike.

²² Let their table before them become a snare; and when they are in peace, [let it become] a trap. ²³ Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake. ²⁴ Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let the fierceness of thine anger overtake them. ²⁵ Let their habitation be desolate; let none dwell in their tents. ²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded, ²⁷ Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness. ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.

²⁵ Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh: ²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: and the desire of the righteous shall be granted. ²⁵ When the whirlwind passeth, the wicked is no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but he shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

³ The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means clear [the guilty]: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

²³ Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! for there shall be great distress upon the land, and wrath unto this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. ²⁵ And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the billows; ²⁶ men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare: ³⁵ for [so] shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face of all the earth.

⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the princes, and the chief captains, and the rich, and the strong, and every bondman and freeman, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains; ¹⁶ and they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: ¹⁷ for the great day of their wrath is come; and who is able to stand?

³ And the LORD said, My spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be an hundred and twenty years.

¹⁸ And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.

⁹ Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him?

¹² There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

³⁴ When he slew them, then they inquired after him: and they returned and sought God early. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and the Most High God their redeemer. ³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied unto him with their tongue.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and they shall cry unto me, but I will not hearken unto them.

¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

¹⁵ I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me earnestly.

⁴ Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not answer them: yea, he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings.

¹³ And it came to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear; so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said the LORD of hosts;

²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out devils, and by thy name do many mighty works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

¹⁰ And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterward come also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. ¹² But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he shall answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are; ²⁶ then shall ye begin to say, We did eat and drink in thy presence, and thou didst teach in our streets; ²⁷ and he shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. ²⁸ There shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and yourselves cast forth without.

³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures.

¹⁴ Yet they said unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

¹⁶ But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes; and that thou hast taken my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.

¹¹ When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding; therefore he that made them will not have compassion upon them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour.

⁹ For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: ¹⁰ which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: ¹¹ get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. ¹² Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon;

⁴² but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

⁵¹ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them which shewed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become betrayers and murderers; ⁵³ ye who received the law as it was ordained by angels, and kept it not. ⁵⁴ Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

²⁵ choosing rather to be evil entreated with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

¹¹¹ Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever; for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹⁷³ Let thine hand be ready to help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

⁹ The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what manner of wisdom is in them?

¹⁸ And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee have me excused. ¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. ²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow trouble, reap the same.

¹⁴ The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man [shall be satisfied] from himself.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.

¹⁰ Say ye of the righteous, that [it shall be] well [with him]: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.

¹⁹ Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: Thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art become sleek: Then he forsook God which made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. ¹⁶ They moved him to jealousy with strange [gods], With abominations provoked they him to anger. ¹⁷ They sacrificed unto demons, [which were] no God, To gods whom they knew not, To new [gods] that came up of late, Whom your fathers dreaded not. ¹⁸ Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, And hast forgotten God that gave thee birth. ¹⁹ And the LORD saw [it], and abhorred [them], Because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters. ²⁰ And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: For they are a very froward generation, Children in whom is no faith. ²¹ They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; They have provoked me to anger with their vanities: And I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. ²² For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest pit, And devoureth the earth with her increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains. ²³ I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them: ²⁴ [They shall be] wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat And bitter destruction; And the teeth of beasts will I send upon them, With the poison of crawling things of the dust. ²⁵ Without shall the sword bereave, And in the chambers terror; [It shall destroy] both young man and virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs. ²⁶ I said, I would scatter them afar, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men: ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, Lest their adversaries should misdeem, Lest they should say, Our hand is exalted, And the LORD hath not done all this. ²⁸ For they are a nation void of counsel, And there is no understanding in them. ²⁹ Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, That they would consider their latter end! ³⁰ How should one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Except their Rock had sold them, And the LORD had delivered them up? ³¹ For their rock is not as our Rock, Even our enemies themselves being judges. ³² For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of gall, Their clusters are bitter: ³³ Their wine is the poison of dragons, And the cruel venom of asps. ³⁴ Is not this laid up in store with me, Sealed up among my treasures? ³⁵ Vengeance is mine, and recompence, At the time when their foot shall slide: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that are to come upon them shall make haste. ³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, And repent himself for his servants; When he seeth that [their] power is gone, And there is none [remaining], shut up or left at large. ³⁷ And he shall say, Where are their gods, The rock in which they trusted; ³⁸ Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, [And] drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you, Let them be your protection. ³⁹ See now that I, even I, am he, And there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I heal: And there is none that can deliver out of my hand. ⁴⁰ For I lift up my hand to heaven, And say, As I live for ever, ⁴¹ If I whet my glittering sword, And mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine adversaries, And will recompense them that hate me. ⁴² I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, And my sword shall devour flesh; With the blood of the slain and the captives, From the head of the leaders of the enemy. ⁴³ Rejoice, O ye nations, [with] his people: For he will avenge the blood of his servants, And will render vengeance to his adversaries, And will make expiation for his land, for his people. ⁴⁴ And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.

⁶ A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this: ⁷ When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

¹¹ Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remaineth in him, and his scent is not changed. ¹² Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will send unto him them that pour off, and they shall pour him off; and they shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles in pieces.

¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: ¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my corn and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day: ²⁰ and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the [crumbs] that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

³⁶ He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

³⁸ But my righteous one shall live by faith: And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him. ³⁹ But we are not of them that shrink back unto perdition; but of them that have faith unto the saving of the soul.

⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.

¹² What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he instruct in the way that he shall choose. ¹³ His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the land.

¹³ Oh that my people would hearken unto me, that Israel would walk in my ways!

⁷ He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see [his desire] upon his adversaries.

²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion; ²² So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. ²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way securely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

³² Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me: for blessed are they that keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. ³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

²⁶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

³ Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.

¹⁸ Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

³ Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁵ While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

⁹ And when ye shall hear of wars and tumults, be not terrified: for these things must needs come to pass first; but the end is not immediately.

¹⁹ In your patience ye shall win your souls.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: ²⁸ and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, which hath given [them] unto me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of the Father’s hand.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁵ who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
