¹⁷ Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

³³ While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. ³⁴ And the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

¹⁰ And the cloud removed from over the Tent; and, behold, Miriam was leprous, as [white as] snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. ¹¹ And Aaron said unto Moses, Oh my lord, lay not, I pray thee, sin upon us, for that we have done foolishly, and for that we have sinned. ¹² Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother’s womb. ¹³ And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her, O God, I beseech thee.

⁵ And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. ⁶ And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. ⁷ And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. ⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. ⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

¹ For the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none that doeth good.

¹ A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt, because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁶ A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this:

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

⁷ And I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as fetters to the correction of the fool;

¹⁷ For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth and smote him, I hid [my face] and was wroth: and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. ¹⁸ I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.

⁶ Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, yea, I will recompense into their bosom, ⁷ your own iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I first measure their work into their bosom.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.

³⁹ Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
