³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow trouble, reap the same.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare:

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging [their] bread.

⁴² The upright shall see it, and be glad; and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity; he walketh with a froward mouth; ¹³ He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he maketh signs with his fingers; ¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth evil continually; he soweth discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; on a sudden shall he be broken and that without remedy. ¹⁶ There be six things which the LORD hateth; yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; ¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief; ¹⁹ A false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he doeth it that would destroy his own soul.

¹³ In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹¹ He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.

¹ Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter. ² Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive; ³ yea, better than them both [did I esteem] him which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. ⁴ Then I saw all labour and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. ⁵ The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh. ⁶ Better is an handful with quietness, than two handfuls with labour and striving after wind. ⁷ Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun. ⁸ There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, [saith he], do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

¹⁵ All this have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth [his life] in his evil-doing.

⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: [there is] a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt. ¹⁰ And withal I saw the wicked buried, and they came [to the grave]; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity. ¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
