¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, ² Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls; Eliasaph the son of Deuel. ¹⁵ Of Naphtali; Ahira the son of Enan. ¹⁶ These are they that were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. ¹⁷ And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by name: ¹⁸ And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. ¹⁹ As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. ²⁰ And the children of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ²¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred. ²² Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; ⁴³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred. ⁴⁴ These are they that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house. ⁴⁵ So all they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; ⁴⁶ even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. ⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. ⁴⁸ For the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ⁴⁹ Only the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel: ⁵⁰ but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. ⁵¹ And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. ⁵² And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts. ⁵³ But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony. ⁵⁴ Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

¹ In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

²² And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy-seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

² On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.

¹⁷ And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.

¹ And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tent of meeting, saying,

³⁴ These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

¹¹ And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony. ¹² And the children of Israel set forward according to their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud abode in the wilderness of Paran.

¹ And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.

¹ And Jacob called unto his sons, and said: Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the latter days. ² Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; And hearken unto Israel your father. ³ Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength; The excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.

¹ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. ² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already.

¹⁴ These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel; Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi: these are the families of Reuben. ¹⁵ And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman: these are the families of Simeon. ¹⁶ And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari: and the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years. ¹⁷ The sons of Gershon; Libni and Shimei, according to their families. ¹⁸ And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel: and the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years. ¹⁹ And the sons of Merari; Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations.

¹² When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel, according to those that are numbered of them, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

²⁶ a beka a head, [that is], half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that were numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.

¹⁸ And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

² Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel. ³ And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, ⁴ [Take the sum of the people], from twenty years old and upward; as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel, which came forth out of the land of Egypt.

⁶³ These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest; who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. ⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them that were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest; who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

¹ And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah. ² And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people. ³ And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

¹ And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. ² And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.

²³ But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of heaven. ²⁴ Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but finished not; and there came wrath for this upon Israel; neither was the number put into the account in the chronicles of king David;

¹⁷ And ye shall observe the [feast of] unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day throughout your generations by an ordinance for ever.

¹⁴ Every one that passeth over unto them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of the LORD.

²⁹ your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,

² Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel.

¹¹ Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

¹ These are the journeys of the children of Israel, when they went forth out of the land of Egypt by their hosts under the hand of Moses and Aaron.

¹⁸ And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all the men of valour.

⁵ When a man taketh a new wife, he shall not go out in the host, neither shall he be charged with any business: he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer his wife which he hath taken.

⁹ And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

¹³ And he had many works in the cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valour, in Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And this was the numbering of them according to their fathers’ houses: of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand: ¹⁵ and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand: ¹⁶ and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour: ¹⁷ And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield: ¹⁸ and next to him Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for war.

¹¹ Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their reckoning, made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains. ¹² The whole number of the heads of fathers’ [houses], even the mighty men of valour, was two thousand and six hundred. ¹³ And under their hand was a trained army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.

²¹ Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

²⁵ And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

¹⁶ These are they that were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

³ And those that pitch on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ⁴ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. ⁵ And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and the prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar: ⁶ and his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred: ⁷ [and] the tribe of Zebulun: and the prince of the children of Zebulun shall be Eliab the son of Helon: ⁸ and his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred. ⁹ All that were numbered of the camp of Judah were an hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, according to their hosts. They shall set forth first. ¹⁰ On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur. ¹¹ And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred. ¹² And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the prince of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai: ¹³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred: ¹⁴ and the tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel. ¹⁵ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty. ¹⁶ All that were numbered of the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, according to their hosts. And they shall set forth second. ¹⁷ Then the tent of meeting shall set forward, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place, by their standards. ¹⁸ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud. ¹⁹ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred. ²⁰ And next unto him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur: ²¹ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred: ²² and the tribe of Benjamin: and the prince of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni: ²³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred. ²⁴ All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred, according to their hosts. And they shall set forth third. ²⁵ On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. ²⁶ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. ²⁷ And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ochran: ²⁸ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred: ²⁹ and the tribe of Naphtali: and the prince of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan: ³⁰ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred. ³¹ All that were numbered of the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall set forth hindmost by their standards.

¹⁰ And the princes offered for the dedication of the altar in the day that it was anointed, even the princes offered their oblation before the altar. ¹¹ And the LORD said unto Moses, They shall offer their oblation, each prince on his day, for the dedication of the altar. ¹² And he that offered his oblation the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah: ¹³ and his oblation was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty [shekels], one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal offering; ¹⁴ one golden spoon of ten [shekels], full of incense; ¹⁵ one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering; ¹⁶ one male of the goats for a sin offering; ¹⁷ and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five he-lambs of the first year: this was the oblation of Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ¹⁸ On the second day Nethanel the son of Zuar, prince of Issachar, did offer: ¹⁹ he offered for his oblation one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty [shekels], one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal offering; ²⁰ one golden spoon of ten [shekels], full of incense; ²¹ one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering; ³⁴ one male of the goats for a sin offering; ³⁵ and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five he-lambs of the first year: this was the oblation of Elizur the son of Shedeur. ³⁶ On the fifth day Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, prince of the children of Simeon: ³⁷ his oblation was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty [shekels], one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal offering; ³⁸ one golden spoon of ten [shekels], full of incense; ³⁹ one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal offering; ⁸⁰ one golden spoon of ten [shekels], full of incense; ⁸¹ one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering; ¹⁴ And in the first [place] the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ¹⁵ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. ¹⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon. ¹⁷ And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bare the tabernacle, set forward. ¹⁸ And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur. ¹⁹ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. ²⁰ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. ²¹ And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and [the other] did set up the tabernacle against they came. ²² And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud. ²³ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. ²⁴ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni. ²⁵ And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. ²⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran. ²⁷ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.

² Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them. ³ And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. ⁴ And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. ⁵ Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. ⁶ Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁷ Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. ⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. ⁹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. ¹⁰ Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. ¹¹ Of the tribe of Joseph, [namely], of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. ¹² Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. ¹³ Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. ¹⁴ Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. ¹⁵ Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

³ And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi: for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses.

⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto the LORD before the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.

¹⁴ Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

¹⁸ And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance. ¹⁹ And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ²⁰ And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. ²¹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. ²² And of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. ²³ Of the children of Joseph: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod: ²⁴ and of the tribe of the children of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. ²⁵ And of the tribe of the children of Zebulun a prince, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. ²⁶ And of the tribe of the children of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. ²⁷ And of the tribe of the children of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. ²⁸ And of the tribe of the children of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.

¹⁵ So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.

¹⁴ and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel.

¹ Now the children of Israel after their number, [to wit], the heads of fathers’ [houses] and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers that served the king, in any matter of the courses which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand. ² Over the first course for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ³ [He was] of the children of Perez, the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month. ⁴ And over the course of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his course; and Mikloth the ruler: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ⁵ The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, chief: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ⁶ This is that Benaiah, who was the mighty man of the thirty, and over the thirty: and of his course was Ammizabad his son. ⁷ The fourth [captain] for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ⁸ The fifth captain for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ⁹ The sixth [captain] for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹⁰ The seventh [captain] for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹¹ The eighth [captain] for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹² The ninth [captain] for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjamites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹³ The tenth [captain] for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zerahites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹⁴ The eleventh [captain] for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹⁵ The twelfth [captain] for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. ¹⁶ Furthermore over the tribes of Israel: of the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri the ruler: of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah: ¹⁷ of Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of Aaron, Zadok: ¹⁸ of Judah, Elihu, one of the brethren of David: of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael: ¹⁹ of Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah: of Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel: ²⁰ of the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah: ²¹ of the half [tribe] of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner: ²² of Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the captains of the tribes of Israel.

³² And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Because the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me. ³³ And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I am hated, he hath therefore given me this [son] also: and she called his name Simeon. ³⁴ And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi. ³⁵ And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, This time will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and she left bearing.

⁵ And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son. ⁶ And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan. ⁷ And Bilhah Rachel’s handmaid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son. ⁸ And Rachel said, With mighty wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob to wife. ¹⁰ And Zilpah Leah’s handmaid bare Jacob a son. ¹¹ And Leah said, Fortunate! and she called his name Gad. ¹² And Zilpah Leah’s handmaid bare Jacob a second son. ¹³ And Leah said, Happy am I! for the daughters will call me happy: and she called his name Asher. ¹⁴ And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes. ¹⁵ And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken away my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son’s mandrakes. ¹⁶ And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for I have surely hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night. ¹⁷ And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband: and she called his name Issachar. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bare a sixth son to Jacob. ²⁰ And Leah said, God hath endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

¹⁷ And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; for now thou shalt have another son. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. ¹⁹ And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem). ²⁰ And Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave: the same is the Pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day. ²¹ And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder. ²² And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine: and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: ²³ the sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun: ²⁴ the sons of Rachel; Joseph and Benjamin: ²⁵ and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid; Dan and Naphtali: ²⁶ and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid; Gad and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Paddan-aram.

⁸ And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn. ⁹ And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman. ¹¹ And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Puvah, and Iob, and Shimron. ¹⁴ And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three. ¹⁶ And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ And the sons of Asher; Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel. ¹⁸ These are the sons of Zilpah, which Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls. ¹⁹ The sons of Rachel Jacob’s wife; Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bare unto him. ²¹ And the sons of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen. ²³ And the sons of Dan; Hushim. ²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

¹ And Jacob called unto his sons, and said: Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the latter days. ² Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; And hearken unto Israel your father. ³ Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength; The excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power. ⁴ Unstable as water, thou shalt not have the excellency; Because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed: Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch. ⁵ Simeon and Levi are brethren; Weapons of violence are their swords. ⁶ O my soul, come not thou into their council; Unto their assembly, my glory, be not thou united; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their selfwill they houghed an ox. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; And their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, And scatter them in Israel. ⁸ Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise: Thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; Thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee. ⁹ Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, thou art gone up: He stooped down, he couched as a lion, And as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh come; And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be. ¹¹ Binding his foal unto the vine, And his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; He hath washed his garments in wine, And his vesture in the blood of grapes: ¹² His eyes shall be red with wine, And his teeth white with milk. ¹³ Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea: And he shall be for an haven of ships; And his border shall be upon Zidon. ¹⁴ Issachar is a strong ass, Couching down between the sheepfolds: ¹⁵ And he saw a resting place that it was good, And the land that it was pleasant; And he bowed his shoulder to bear, And became a servant under taskwork. ¹⁶ Dan shall judge his people, As one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan shall be a serpent in the way, An adder in the path, That biteth the horse’s heels, So that his rider falleth backward. ¹⁸ I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD. ¹⁹ Gad, a troop shall press upon him: But he shall press upon their heel. ²⁰ Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, And he shall yield royal dainties. ²¹ Naphtali is a hind let loose: He giveth goodly words. ²² Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a fountain; His branches run over the wall. ²³ The archers have sorely grieved him, And shot at him, and persecuted him: ²⁴ But his bow abode in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong, By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, (From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel,) ²⁵ Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee, And by the Almighty, who shall bless thee, With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that coucheth beneath, Blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of thy father Have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors Unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. ²⁷ Benjamin is a wolf that ravineth: In the morning he shall devour the prey, And at even he shall divide the spoil. ²⁸ All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. ²⁹ And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰ in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace: ³¹ there they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah: ³² the field and the cave that is therein, which was purchased from the children of Heth. ³³ And when Jacob made an end of charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

¹⁰ On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.

¹ And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. ² And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, And rose from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, And he came from the ten thousands of holy ones: At his right hand was a fiery law unto them. ³ Yea, he loveth the peoples; All his saints are in thy hand: And they sat down at thy feet; [Every one] shall receive of thy words. ⁴ Moses commanded us a law, An inheritance for the assembly of Jacob. ⁵ And he was king in Jeshurun, When the heads of the people were gathered, All the tribes of Israel together. ⁶ Let Reuben live, and not die; Yet let his men be few. ⁷ And this is [the blessing] of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, And bring him in unto his people: With his hands he contended for himself; And thou shalt be an help against his adversaries. ⁸ And of Levi he said, Thy Thummim and thy Urim are with thy godly one, Whom thou didst prove at Massah, With whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah; ⁹ Who said of his father, and of his mother, I have not seen him; Neither did he acknowledge his brethren, Nor knew he his own children: For they have observed thy word, And keep thy covenant. ¹⁰ They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, And Israel thy law: They shall put incense before thee, And whole burnt offering upon thine altar. ¹¹ Bless, LORD, his substance, And accept the work of his hands: Smite through the loins of them that rise up against him, And of them that hate him, that they rise not again. ¹² Of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; He covereth him all the day long, And he dwelleth between his shoulders. ¹³ And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land; For the precious things of heaven, for the dew, And for the deep that coucheth beneath, ¹⁴ And for the precious things of the fruits of the sun, And for the precious things of the growth of the moons, ¹⁵ And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, And for the precious things of the everlasting hills, ¹⁶ And for the precious things of the earth and the fulness thereof, And the good will of him that dwelt in the bush: Let [the blessing] come upon the head of Joseph, And upon the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. ¹⁷ The firstling of his bullock, majesty is his; And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox: With them he shall push the peoples all of them, [even] the ends of the earth: And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And they are the thousands of Manasseh. ¹⁸ And of Zebulun he said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; And, Issachar, in thy tents. ¹⁹ They shall call the peoples unto the mountain; There shall they offer sacrifices of righteousness: For they shall suck the abundance of the seas, And the hidden treasures of the sand. ²⁰ And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: He dwelleth as a lioness, And teareth the arm, yea, the crown of the head. ²¹ And he provided the first part for himself, For there was the lawgiver’s portion reserved; And he came [with] the heads of the people, He executed the justice of the LORD, And his judgments with Israel. ²² And of Dan he said, Dan is a lion’s whelp, That leapeth forth from Bashan. ²³ And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, And full with the blessing of the LORD: Possess thou the west and the south. ²⁴ And of Asher he said, Blessed be Asher with children; Let him be acceptable unto his brethren, And let him dip his foot in oil. ²⁵ Thy bars shall be iron and brass; And as thy days, so shall thy strength be. ²⁶ There is none like unto God, O Jeshurun, Who rideth upon the heaven for thy help, And in his excellency on the skies. ²⁷ The eternal God is [thy] dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms: And he thrust out the enemy from before thee, And said, Destroy. ²⁸ And Israel dwelleth in safety, The fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of corn and wine; Yea, his heavens drop down dew. ²⁹ Happy art thou, O Israel: Who is like unto thee, a people saved by the LORD, The shield of thy help, And that is the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall submit themselves unto thee; And thou shalt tread upon their high places.

⁴ And I heard the number of them which were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel. ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah [were] sealed twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand: ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand: ⁷ Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand: ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand.

¹² And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the prince of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai:

³⁶ On the fifth day Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, prince of the children of Simeon:

³ And those that pitch on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

¹² And he that offered his oblation the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah:

¹⁴ And in the first [place] the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

¹⁸ Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez begat Hezron;

²⁰ and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon;

¹⁰ And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah; ¹¹ and Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz;

² Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren; ³ and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram; ⁴ and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon; ⁵ and Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

³² the [son] of Jesse, the [son] of Obed, the [son] of Boaz, the [son] of Salmon, the [son] of Nahshon,

⁵ And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and the prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar:

¹⁸ On the second day Nethanel the son of Zuar, prince of Issachar, did offer:

¹⁵ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar.

⁷ [and] the tribe of Zebulun: and the prince of the children of Zebulun shall be Eliab the son of Helon:

²⁴ On the third day Eliab the son of Helon, prince of the children of Zebulun:

¹⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.

¹⁸ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.

²⁰ And next unto him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the prince of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur:

⁴⁸ On the seventh day Elishama the son of Ammihud, prince of the children of Ephraim:

⁵⁴ On the eighth day Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, prince of the children of Manasseh:

²² And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud. ²³ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

²⁶ Ladan his son, Ammihud his son, Elishama his son; ²⁷ Nun his son, Joshua his son.

²² and the tribe of Benjamin: and the prince of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni:

⁶⁰ On the ninth day Abidan the son of Gideoni, prince of the children of Benjamin:

²⁴ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.

²⁵ On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

⁶⁶ On the tenth day Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, prince of the children of Dan:

²⁵ And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

²⁷ And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the prince of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ochran:

⁷² On the eleventh day Pagiel the son of Ochran, prince of the children of Asher:

²⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran.

¹⁴ and the tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

⁴² On the sixth day Eliasaph the son of Deuel, prince of the children of Gad:

²⁰ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

²⁹ and the tribe of Naphtali: and the prince of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan:

⁷⁸ On the twelfth day Ahira the son of Enan, prince of the children of Naphtali:

²⁷ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.

⁴ And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of his fathers’ house.

² that the princes of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses, offered; these were the princes of the tribes, these are they that were over them that were numbered:

¹⁷ And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

² and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown:

⁹ And the sons of Eliab; Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. These are that Dathan and Abiram, which were called of the congregation, who strove against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they strove against the LORD:

¹⁵ And he said unto him, Oh Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

⁷ And Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds;

²³ See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me of a certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.

² But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

⁵ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur. ⁶ Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. ⁷ Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ⁸ Of Issachar; Nethanel the son of Zuar. ⁹ Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon. ¹⁰ Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim; Elishama the son of Ammihud: of Manasseh; Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. ¹¹ Of Benjamin; Abidan the son of Gideoni. ¹² Of Dan; Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. ¹³ Of Asher; Pagiel the son of Ochran. ¹⁴ Of Gad; Eliasaph the son of Deuel. ¹⁵ Of Naphtali; Ahira the son of Enan.

³ To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

⁴ And I heard the number of them which were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel. ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah [were] sealed twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand: ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand: ⁷ Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand: ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand. ⁹ After these things I saw, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of [all] tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, arrayed in white robes, and palms in their hands; ¹⁰ and they cry with a great voice, saying, Salvation unto our God which sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb. ¹¹ And all the angels were standing round about the throne, and [about] the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, ¹² saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, [be] unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. ¹³ And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, These which are arrayed in the white robes, who are they, and whence came they? ¹⁴ And I say unto him, My lord, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which come out of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ Therefore are they before the throne of God; and they serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall spread his tabernacle over them. ¹⁶ They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike upon them, nor any heat: ¹⁷ for the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto fountains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

⁵⁹ And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, [and] Immer: but they could not shew their fathers’ houses, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:

⁶¹ And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their fathers’ houses, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel:

³ without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like unto the Son of God), abideth a priest continually.

⁶ but he whose genealogy is not counted from them hath taken tithes of Abraham, and hath blessed him that hath the promises.

² Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls;

¹ And it came to pass after the plague, that the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying, ² Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel.

¹ And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah. ² And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people. ³ And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? ⁴ Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. ⁵ And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer. ⁶ then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Zidon, ⁷ and came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba. ⁸ So when they had gone to and fro through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. ⁹ And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. ¹⁰ And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: but now, O LORD, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

³² And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Because the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.

⁹ And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

³ Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength; The excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power. ⁴ Unstable as water, thou shalt not have the excellency; Because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed: Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

¹⁰ On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur. ¹¹ And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: the sons of Reuben; [of] Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites: of Pallu, the family of the Palluites: ⁶ of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites: of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. ⁷ These are the families of the Reubenites: and they that were numbered of them were forty and three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

¹ And the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s couch, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.

⁷ These are the families of the Reubenites: and they that were numbered of them were forty and three thousand and seven hundred and thirty.

³³ And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I am hated, he hath therefore given me this [son] also: and she called his name Simeon.

²⁵ And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unawares, and slew all the males. ²⁶ And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went forth. ²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister. ²⁸ They took their flocks and their herds and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field; ²⁹ and all their wealth, and all their little ones and their wives, took they captive and spoiled, even all that was in the house. ³⁰ And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and, I being few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and smite me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

²⁴ And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and he returned to them, and spake to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

¹⁰ And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.

⁵ Simeon and Levi are brethren; Weapons of violence are their swords. ⁶ O my soul, come not thou into their council; Unto their assembly, my glory, be not thou united; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their selfwill they houghed an ox.

¹² And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the prince of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai: ¹³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred:

¹² The sons of Simeon after their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites: of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites: of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites: ¹³ of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites: of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites. ¹⁴ These are the families of the Simeonites, twenty and two thousand and two hundred.

¹³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred:

⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. ⁹ And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

¹⁴ These are the families of the Simeonites, twenty and two thousand and two hundred.

¹⁰ And Zilpah Leah’s handmaid bare Jacob a son. ¹¹ And Leah said, Fortunate! and she called his name Gad.

¹⁶ And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

¹⁹ Gad, a troop shall press upon him: But he shall press upon their heel.

¹⁴ and the tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel. ¹⁵ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

¹⁵ The sons of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites: ¹⁶ of Ozni, the family of the Oznites: of Eri, the family of the Erites: ¹⁷ of Arod, the family of the Arodites: of Areli, the family of the Arelites. ¹⁸ These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred.

¹⁵ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

³⁵ And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, This time will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and she left bearing.

¹² And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.

⁸ Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise: Thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; Thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee. ⁹ Judah is a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, thou art gone up: He stooped down, he couched as a lion, And as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh come; And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be. ¹¹ Binding his foal unto the vine, And his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; He hath washed his garments in wine, And his vesture in the blood of grapes: ¹² His eyes shall be red with wine, And his teeth white with milk.

³ And those that pitch on the east side toward the sunrising shall be they of the standard of the camp of Judah, according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Judah shall be Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ⁴ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

¹⁹ The sons of Judah, Er and Onan: and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ And the sons of Judah after their families were; of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites: of Perez, the family of the Perezites: of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites. ²¹ And the sons of Perez were; of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites: of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites. ²² These are the families of Judah according to those that were numbered of them, threescore and sixteen thousand and five hundred.

² For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the prince; but the birthright was Joseph’s:)

¹⁴ And this was the numbering of them according to their fathers’ houses: of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand: ¹⁵ and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand: ¹⁶ and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour:

² Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;

²² These are the families of Judah according to those that were numbered of them, threescore and sixteen thousand and five hundred.

¹⁸ And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I gave my handmaid to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.

¹³ And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Puvah, and Iob, and Shimron.

¹⁴ Issachar is a strong ass, Couching down between the sheepfolds: ¹⁵ And he saw a resting place that it was good, And the land that it was pleasant; And he bowed his shoulder to bear, And became a servant under taskwork.

⁵ And those that pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and the prince of the children of Issachar shall be Nethanel the son of Zuar: ⁶ and his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred:

²³ Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob, Neither is there any divination with Israel: Now shall it be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought! ²⁴ Behold, the people riseth up as a lioness, And as a lion doth he lift himself up: He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, And drink the blood of the slain. ²⁵ And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.

²⁴ and she called his name Joseph, saying, The LORD add to me another son.

¹ And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father’s sojournings, in the land of Canaan. ² These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and he was a lad with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought the evil report of them unto their father. ³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. ⁴ And his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren; and they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. ⁵ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. ⁶ And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: ⁷ for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. ⁸ And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. ⁹ And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars made obeisance to me. ¹⁰ And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? ¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind. ¹² And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. ¹³ And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. ¹⁴ And he said to him, Go now, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. ¹⁵ And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? ¹⁶ And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding [the flock]. ¹⁷ And the man said, They are departed hence: for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. ¹⁸ And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. ¹⁹ And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. ²⁰ Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, An evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. ²¹ And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said, Let us not take his life. ²² And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him: that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father. ²³ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on him; ²⁴ and they took him, and cast him into the pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. ²⁵ And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a travelling company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. ²⁶ And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened unto him. ²⁸ And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt. ²⁹ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. ³⁰ And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go? ³¹ And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the coat in the blood; ³² and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or not. ³³ And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces. ³⁴ And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. ³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down to the grave to my son mourning. And his father wept for him. ³⁶ And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.

¹ And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hand of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him down thither. ² And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. ³ And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. ⁴ And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he ministered unto him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. ⁵ And it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had, in the house and in the field. ⁶ And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not aught [that was] with him, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was comely, and well favoured. ⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. ⁸ But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand; ⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, [or] to be with her. ¹¹ And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within. ¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. ¹³ And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, ¹⁴ that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: ¹⁵ and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled, and got him out. ¹⁶ And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home. ¹⁷ And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: ¹⁸ and it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and fled out. ¹⁹ And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. ²⁰ And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. ²¹ But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed kindness unto him, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. ²² And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. ²³ The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him; and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

²⁰ And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On bare unto him.

¹ And it came to pass after these things, that one said to Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. ² And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed. ³ And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, ⁴ and said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a company of peoples; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession. ⁵ And now thy two sons, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, shall be mine. ⁶ And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine; they shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. ⁷ And as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when there was still some way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem). ⁸ And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these? ⁹ And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me here. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them. ¹⁰ Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. ¹¹ And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath let me see thy seed also. ¹² And Joseph brought them out from between his knees; and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. ¹³ And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him. ¹⁴ And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. ¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said, The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which hath fed me all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the angel which hath redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. ¹⁷ And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head. ¹⁸ And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. ¹⁹ And his father refused, and said, I know [it], my son, I know [it]: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: howbeit his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. ²⁰ And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. ²¹ And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. ²² Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

²² Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a fountain; His branches run over the wall. ²³ The archers have sorely grieved him, And shot at him, and persecuted him: ²⁴ But his bow abode in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong, By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, (From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel,) ²⁵ Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee, And by the Almighty, who shall bless thee, With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that coucheth beneath, Blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of thy father Have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors Unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

¹⁸ On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their hosts: and the prince of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud. ¹⁹ And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred.

³⁵ These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites: of Becher, the family of the Becherites: of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. ³⁶ And these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. ³⁷ These are the families of the sons of Ephraim according to those that were numbered of them, thirty and two thousand and five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph after their families.

¹⁷ The firstling of his bullock, majesty is his; And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox: With them he shall push the peoples all of them, [even] the ends of the earth: And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And they are the thousands of Manasseh.

¹⁶ And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was still some way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. ¹⁷ And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; for now thou shalt have another son. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.

²⁰ And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

²¹ And the sons of Benjamin; Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

²⁷ Benjamin is a wolf that ravineth: In the morning he shall devour the prey, And at even he shall divide the spoil.

¹⁷ And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield:

⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand.

²³ and his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these [were] men of valour. ⁴⁵ And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and followed hard after them unto Gidom, and smote of them two thousand men. ⁴⁶ So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

⁵ And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son. ⁶ And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.

²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them that were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest; who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

² and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing:

¹⁶ And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

⁵ And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to tell them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

⁶ And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

¹⁷ that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

³ sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

¹⁴ and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

³ And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: ⁴ I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

³⁷ And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.

¹⁰ Who can count the dust of Jacob, Or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, And let my last end be like his!

⁵¹ These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred thousand and a thousand seven hundred and thirty.

²² Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

²⁰ Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and making merry.

⁵ And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword;

³ And Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valour.

¹⁴ And this was the numbering of them according to their fathers’ houses: of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand: ¹⁵ and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand: ¹⁶ and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour: ¹⁷ And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield: ¹⁸ and next to him Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for war. ¹⁹ These were they that waited on the king, beside those whom the king put in the fenced cities throughout all Judah.

¹¹ By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive seed when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised: ¹² wherefore also there sprang of one, and him as good as dead, [so many] as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the sand, which is by the sea shore, innumerable.

⁴ And I heard the number of them which were sealed, a hundred and forty and four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel. ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah [were] sealed twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand: ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand: ⁷ Of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand: ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand: Of the tribe of Benjamin [were] sealed twelve thousand. ⁹ After these things I saw, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of [all] tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, arrayed in white robes, and palms in their hands;

³ from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel, thou and Aaron shall number them by their hosts.

⁵⁰ but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

³³ But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.

¹ Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai. ² And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office. ⁴ And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father. ⁵ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ⁶ Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. ⁷ And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. ⁸ And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. ⁹ And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him on the behalf of the children of Israel. ¹⁰ And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. ¹¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ¹² And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine: ¹³ for all the firstborn are mine; on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine they shall be; I am the LORD. ¹⁴ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, ¹⁵ Number the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them. ¹⁶ And Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded. ¹⁷ And these were the sons of Levi by their names; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. ¹⁸ And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families; Libni and Shimei. ¹⁹ And the sons of Kohath by their families; Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. ²⁰ And the sons of Merari by their families; Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses. ²¹ Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites: these are the families of the Gershonites. ²² Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred. ²³ The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward. ²⁴ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. ²⁵ And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, ²⁶ and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof. ²⁷ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. ²⁸ According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. ²⁹ The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward. ³⁰ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. ³¹ And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the screen, and all the service thereof. ³² And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, [and have] the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary. ³³ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari. ³⁴ And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. ³⁵ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward. ³⁶ And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all the service thereof; ³⁷ and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. ³⁸ And those that pitch before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. ³⁹ All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand. ⁴⁰ And the LORD said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. ⁴¹ And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the LORD) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel. ⁴² And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel. ⁴³ And all the firstborn males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen. ⁴⁴ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ⁴⁵ Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle: and the Levites shall be mine; I am the LORD. ⁴⁶ And for the redemption of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are over and above [the number of] the Levites, ⁴⁷ thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll; after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs): ⁴⁸ and thou shalt give the money wherewith the odd number of them is redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons. ⁴⁹ And Moses took the redemption-money from them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites:

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ² Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, ³ from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. ⁴ This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, [about] the most holy things: ⁵ when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it: ⁶ and shall put thereon a covering of sealskin, and shall spread over it a cloth all of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof. ⁷ And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and the cups to pour out withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon: ⁸ and they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof. ⁹ And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its tongs, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: ¹⁰ and they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it upon the frame. ¹¹ And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof: ¹² and they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame. ¹³ And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon: ¹⁴ and they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof. ¹⁵ And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. ¹⁶ And the charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal offering, and the anointing oil, the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof. ¹⁷ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ¹⁸ Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites: ¹⁹ but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden: ²⁰ but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die. ²¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ²² Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families; ²³ from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. ²⁴ This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: ²⁵ they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting; ²⁶ and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatsoever shall be done with them, therein shall they serve. ²⁷ At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden. ²⁸ This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. ²⁹ As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses; ³⁰ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting. ³¹ And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof; ³² and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall appoint the instruments of the charge of their burden. ³³ This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. ³⁴ And Moses and Aaron and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers’ houses, ³⁵ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting: ³⁶ and those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. ³⁷ These are they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. ³⁸ And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by their fathers’ houses, ³⁹ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, ⁴⁰ even those that were numbered of them, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty. ⁴¹ These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD. ⁴² And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, ⁴³ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, ⁴⁴ even those that were numbered of them by their families, were three thousand and two hundred. ⁴⁵ These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. ⁴⁶ All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel numbered, by their families, and by their fathers’ houses, ⁴⁷ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service, and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, ⁴⁸ even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore. ⁴⁹ According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ² Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the candlestick. ³ And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof [so as to give light] in front of the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses. ⁴ And this was the work of the candlestick, beaten work of gold; unto the base thereof, [and] unto the flowers thereof, it was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had shewed Moses, so he made the candlestick. ⁵ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ⁶ Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. ⁷ And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of expiation upon them, and let them cause a razor to pass over all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves. ⁸ Then let them take a young bullock, and its meal offering, fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering. ⁹ And thou shalt present the Levites before the tent of meeting: and thou shalt assemble the whole congregation of the children of Israel: ¹⁰ and thou shalt present the Levites before the LORD: and the children of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites: ¹¹ and Aaron shall offer the Levites before the LORD for a wave offering, on the behalf of the children of Israel, that they may be to do the service of the LORD. ¹² And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and offer thou the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites. ¹³ And thou shalt set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for a wave offering unto the LORD. ¹⁴ Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine. ¹⁵ And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tent of meeting: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for a wave offering. ¹⁶ For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of all that openeth the womb, even the firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me. ¹⁷ For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself. ¹⁸ And I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel. ¹⁹ And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary. ²⁰ Thus did Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the Levites: according unto all that the LORD commanded Moses touching the Levites, so did the children of Israel unto them. ²¹ And the Levites purified themselves from sin, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them for a wave offering before the LORD; and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. ²² And after that went the Levites in to do their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron, and before his sons: as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did they unto them. ²³ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ²⁴ This is that which belongeth unto the Levites: from twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service in the work of the tent of meeting: ²⁵ and from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the work, and shall serve no more; ²⁶ but shall minister with their brethren in the tent of meeting, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charges.

⁵⁷ And these are they that were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites: of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites: of Merari, the family of the Merarites. ⁵⁸ These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites. And Kohath begat Amram. ⁵⁹ And the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. ⁶⁰ And unto Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ⁶¹ And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered strange fire before the LORD. ⁶² And they that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, every male from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

And the sons of Aaron; Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ⁴ Eleazar begat Phinehas, Phinehas begat Abishua; ⁵ and Abishua begat Bukki, and Bukki begat Uzzi; ⁶ and Uzzi begat Zerahiah, and Zerahiah begat Meraioth; ⁷ Meraioth begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub; ⁸ and Ahitub begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Ahimaaz; ⁹ and Ahimaaz begat Azariah, and Azariah begat Johanan; ¹⁰ and Johanan begat Azariah (he it is that executed the priest’s office in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem:) ¹¹ and Azariah begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub; ¹² and Ahitub begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Shallum; ¹³ and Shallum begat Hilkiah, and Hilkiah begat Azariah; ¹⁴ and Azariah begat Seraiah, and Seraiah begat Jehozadak; ¹⁵ And Jehozadak went [into captivity], when the LORD carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar. ¹⁶ The sons of Levi; Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. ¹⁷ And these be the names of the sons of Gershom; Libni and Shimei. ¹⁸ And the sons of Kohath were Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel. ¹⁹ The sons of Merari; Mahli and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their father’s [houses]. ²⁰ Of Gershom; Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son; ²¹ Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeatherai his son. ²² The sons of Kohath; Amminadab his son, Koran his son, Assir his son; ²³ Elkanah his son, and Ebiasaph his son, and Assir his son; ²⁴ Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaul his son. ²⁵ And the sons of Elkanah; Amasai, and Ahimoth. ²⁶ As for Elkanah: the sons of Elkanah; Zophai his son, and Nahath his son; ²⁷ Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son. ²⁸ And the sons of Samuel; the firstborn, [Joel], and the second Abijah. ²⁹ The sons of Merari; Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son; ³⁰ Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son. ³¹ And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest. ³² And they ministered with song before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and they waited on their office according to their order. ³³ And these are they that waited, and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel; ³⁴ the son of Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Eliel, the son of Toah; ³⁵ the son of Zuph, the son of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, the son of Amasai; ³⁶ the son of Elkanah, the son of Joel, the son of Azariah, the son of Zephaniah; ³⁷ the son of Tahath, the son of Assir, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah; ³⁸ the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel. ³⁹ And his brother Asaph, who stood on his right hand, even Asaph the son of Berechiah, the son of Shimea; ⁴⁰ the son of Michael, the son of Baaseiah, the son of Malchijah; ⁴¹ the son of Ethni, the son of Zerah, the son of Adaiah; ⁴² the son of Ethan, the son of Zimmah, the son of Shimei; ⁴³ the son of Jahath, the son of Gershom, the son of Levi. ⁴⁴ And on the left hand their brethren the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, the son of Abdi, the son of Malluch; ⁴⁵ the son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah; ⁴⁶ the son of Amzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shemer; ⁴⁷ the son of Mahli, the son of Mushi, the son of Merari, the son of Levi. ⁴⁸ And their brethren the Levites were appointed for all the service of the tabernacle of the house of God. ⁴⁹ But Aaron and his sons offered upon the altar of burnt offering, and upon the altar of incense, for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded. ⁵⁰ And these are the sons of Aaron; Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son; ⁵¹ Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son; ⁵² Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son; ⁵³ Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son. ⁵⁴ Now these are their dwelling places according to their encampments in their borders: to the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, for theirs was the [first] lot, ⁵⁵ to them they gave Hebron in the land of Judah, and the suburbs thereof round about it; ⁵⁶ but the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷ And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge, Hebron; Libnah also with her suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs; ⁵⁸ and Hilen with her suburbs, Debir with her suburbs; ⁵⁹ and Ashan with her suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with her suburbs: ⁶⁰ and out of the tribe of Benjamin; Geba with her suburbs, and Allemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs. All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities. ⁶¹ And unto the rest of the sons of Kohath [were given] by lot, out of the family of the tribe, out of the half tribe, the half of Manasseh, ten cities. ⁶² And to the sons of Gershom, according to their families, out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. ⁶³ Unto the sons of Merari [were given] by lot, according to their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. ⁶⁴ And the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities with their suburbs. ⁶⁵ And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities which are mentioned by name. ⁶⁶ And some of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ And they gave unto them the cities of refuge, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim with her suburbs; Gezer also with her suburbs; ⁶⁸ and Jokmeam with her suburbs, and Beth-horon with her suburbs; ⁶⁹ and Aijalon with her suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs: ⁷⁰ and out of the half tribe of Manasseh; Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs, for the rest of the family of the sons of Kohath. ⁷¹ Unto the sons of Gershom [were given], out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs: ⁷² and out of the tribe of Issachar; Kedesh with her suburbs, Daberath with her suburbs; ⁷³ and Ramoth with her suburbs, and Anem with her suburbs: ⁷⁴ and out of the tribe of Asher; Mashal with her suburbs, and Abdon with her suburbs; ⁷⁵ and Hukok with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs: ⁷⁶ and out of the tribe of Naphtali; Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, and Hammon with her suburbs, and Kiriathaim with her suburbs. ⁷⁷ Unto the rest of [the Levites], the sons of Merari, [were given], out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmono with her suburbs, Tabor with her suburbs: ⁷⁸ and beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of Jordan, [were given them], out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wilderness with her suburbs, and Jahzah with her suburbs, ⁷⁹ and Kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs: ⁸⁰ and out of the tribe of Gad; Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, and Mahanaim with her suburbs, ⁸¹ and Heshbon with her suburbs, and Jazer with her suburbs.

⁶ But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

⁶² And they that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, every male from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

¹⁸ And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, the two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

²⁶ then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoso is on the LORD’S side, [let him come] unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. ²⁷ And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour. ²⁸ And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. ²⁹ And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, yea, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

²¹ This is the sum of [the things for] the tabernacle, even the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were counted, according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.

⁵³ But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

¹⁷ Then the tent of meeting shall set forward, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place, by their standards.

¹ Now these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai. ² And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office. ⁴ And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father. ⁵ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ⁶ Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. ⁷ And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. ⁸ And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. ⁹ And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him on the behalf of the children of Israel. ¹⁰ And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

²³ The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward. ²⁴ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. ²⁵ And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the Tent, the covering thereof, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, ²⁶ and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof. ²⁷ And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. ²⁸ According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. ²⁹ The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward. ³⁰ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. ³¹ And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the screen, and all the service thereof. ³² And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be prince of the princes of the Levites, [and have] the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary. ³³ Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari. ³⁴ And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. ³⁵ And the prince of the fathers’ house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: they shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward. ³⁶ And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the instruments thereof, and all the service thereof; ³⁷ and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. ³⁸ And those that pitch before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

¹⁵ And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.

²⁵ they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting; ²⁶ and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatsoever shall be done with them, therein shall they serve. ²⁷ At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden. ²⁸ This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. ²⁹ As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers’ houses; ³⁰ from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting. ³¹ And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof; ³² and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall appoint the instruments of the charge of their burden. ³³ This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

²¹ And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and [the other] did set up the tabernacle against they came.

¹¹ And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.

¹ Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel. ² And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. ³ And the Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand. ⁴ Of these, twenty and four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges: ⁵ and four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, [said David], to praise therewith. ⁶ And David divided them into courses according to the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ⁷ Of the Gershonites; Ladan and Shimei. ⁸ The sons of Ladan; Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three. ⁹ The sons of Shimei; Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’ [houses] of Ladan. ¹⁰ And the sons of Shimei; Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. ¹¹ And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they became a fathers’ house in one reckoning. ¹² The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. ¹³ The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, for ever. ¹⁴ But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. ¹⁵ The sons of Moses; Gershom and Eliezer. ¹⁶ The sons of Gershom; Shebuel the chief. ¹⁷ And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. ¹⁸ The sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief. ¹⁹ The sons of Hebron; Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. ²⁰ The sons of Uzziel; Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second. ²¹ The sons of Merari; Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar and Kish. ²² And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters only: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them [to wife]. ²³ The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three. ²⁴ These were the sons of Levi after their fathers’ houses, even the heads of the fathers’ [houses] of those of them that were counted, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and upward. ²⁵ For David said, The LORD, the God of Israel, hath given rest unto his people; and he dwelleth in Jerusalem for ever: ²⁶ and also the Levites shall no more have need to carry the tabernacle and all the vessels of it for the service thereof. ²⁷ For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered, from twenty years old and upward. ²⁸ For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God; ²⁹ for the shewbread also, and for the fine flour for a meal offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all manner of measure and size; ³⁰ and to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even; ³¹ and to offer all burnt offerings unto the LORD, in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feast, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before the LORD: ³² and that they should keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, for the service of the house of the LORD.

¹ Moreover David and the captains of the host separated for the service certain of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of them that did the work according to their service was: ² of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asharelah, the sons of Asaph; under the hand of Asaph, who prophesied after the order of the king. ³ Of Jeduthun: the sons of Jeduthun; Gedaliah, and Zeri, and Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six; under the hands of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD. ⁴ Of Heman: the sons of Heman; Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth: ⁵ All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. ⁶ All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God; Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman being under the order of the king. ⁷ And the number of them, with their brethren that were instructed in singing unto the LORD, even all that were skilful, was two hundred fourscore and eight. ⁸ And they cast lots for their charges, all alike, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar. ⁹ Now the first lot came forth for Asaph to Joseph: the second to Gedaliah; he and his brethren and sons were twelve: ¹⁰ the third to Zaccur, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹¹ the fourth to Izri, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹² the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹³ the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹⁴ the seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹⁵ the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons mad his brethren, twelve: ¹⁶ the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹⁷ the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹⁸ the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ¹⁹ the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²⁰ for the thirteenth, Shubael, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²¹ for the fourteenth, Mattithiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²² for the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²³ for the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²⁴ for the seventeenth to Joshbekashah, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²⁵ for the eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his brethren, twelve: ²⁶ for the nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his brethren, twelve:

²⁵ and weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering for the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his princes, and all Israel there present, had offered: ²⁶ I even weighed into their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents; of gold an hundred talents; ²⁷ and twenty bowls of gold, of a thousand darics; and two vessels of fine bright brass, precious as gold. ²⁸ And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD, and the vessels are holy; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD, the God of your fathers. ²⁹ Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chiefs of the priests and the Levites, and the princes of the fathers’ [houses] of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD. ³⁰ So the priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.

³³ And on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levites; ³⁴ the whole by number and by weight: and all the weight was written at that time.

⁸ Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, [and] Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren.

²² The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded heads of fathers’ [houses]: also the priests, in the reign of Darius the Persian.

⁴⁷ And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, as every day required: and they sanctified for the Levites; and the Levites sanctified for the sons of Aaron.

⁵ had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave offerings for the priests.

¹⁰ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. ¹¹ Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. ¹² Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the wine and the oil unto the treasuries. ¹³ And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren.

²² And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember unto me, O my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

⁴ Whither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the LORD [for] a testimony unto Israel, to give thanks into the name of the LORD.

¹⁰ There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a sojourner of the priest’s, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing. ¹¹ But if a priest buy any soul, the purchase of his money, he shall eat of it; and such as are born in his house, they shall eat of his bread. ¹² And if a priest’s daughter be married unto a stranger, she shall not eat of the heave offering of the holy things. ¹³ But if a priest’s daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father’s house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s bread: but there shall no stranger eat thereof.

¹⁰ And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

³⁸ And those that pitch before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ² Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, ³ from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. ⁴ This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, [about] the most holy things: ⁵ when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it: ⁶ and shall put thereon a covering of sealskin, and shall spread over it a cloth all of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof. ⁷ And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and the cups to pour out withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon: ⁸ and they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof. ⁹ And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its tongs, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: ¹⁰ and they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it upon the frame. ¹¹ And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof: ¹² and they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame. ¹³ And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon: ¹⁴ and they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof. ¹⁵ And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. ¹⁶ And the charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal offering, and the anointing oil, the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof. ¹⁷ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ¹⁸ Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites: ¹⁹ but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden: ²⁰ but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die. ²¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ²² Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers’ houses, by their families; ²³ from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. ²⁴ This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens:

¹¹ And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony.

¹⁷ And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bare the tabernacle, set forward. ¹⁸ And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur. ¹⁹ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. ²⁰ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. ²¹ And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and [the other] did set up the tabernacle against they came.

⁴⁰ to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD spake unto him by the hand of Moses.

²² And henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.

¹⁹ And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people seventy men, [and] fifty thousand men: and the people mourned, because the LORD had smitten the people with a great slaughter.

⁷ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

² The children of Israel shall pitch every man by his own standard, with the ensigns of their fathers’ houses: over against the tent of meeting shall they pitch round about.

³⁴ Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, ² Make thee two trumpets of silver; of beaten work shalt thou make them: and thou shalt use them for the calling of the congregation, and for the journeying of the camps. ³ And when they shall blow with them, all the congregation shall gather themselves unto thee at the door of the tent of meeting. ⁴ And if they blow but with one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee. ⁵ And when ye blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall take their journey. ⁶ And when ye blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys. ⁷ But when the assembly is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. ⁸ And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for a statute for ever throughout your generations. ⁹ And when ye go to war in your land against the adversary that oppresseth you, then ye shall sound an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies. ¹⁰ Also in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God: I am the LORD your God. ¹¹ And it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony. ¹² And the children of Israel set forward according to their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud abode in the wilderness of Paran. ¹³ And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. ¹⁴ And in the first [place] the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Amminadab. ¹⁵ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar. ¹⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon. ¹⁷ And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bare the tabernacle, set forward. ¹⁸ And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur. ¹⁹ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. ²⁰ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. ²¹ And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and [the other] did set up the tabernacle against they came. ²² And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud. ²³ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. ²⁴ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni. ²⁵ And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. ²⁶ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran. ²⁷ And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan. ²⁸ Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their hosts; and they set forward. ²⁹ And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel. ³⁰ And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred. ³¹ And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou shalt be to us instead of eyes. ³² And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what good soever the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee. ³³ And they set forward from the mount of the LORD three days’ journey; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting place for them. ³⁴ And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp. ³⁵ And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, O LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee. ³⁶ And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel.

² And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

⁶ And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes; that ye die not, and that he be not wroth with all the congregation: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

⁷ And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. ⁸ And they shall keep all the furniture of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.

¹⁹ And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary.

⁴⁶ And Moses said unto Aaron, Take thy censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.

² And thy brethren also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall be before the tent of the testimony. ³ And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the Tent: only they shall not come nigh unto the vessels of the sanctuary and unto the altar, that they die not, neither they, nor ye. ⁴ And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the Tent: and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you. ⁵ And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be wrath no more upon the children of Israel.

³⁰ And of the children of Israel’s half, thou shalt take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, [even] of all the cattle, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.

⁴⁷ even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

³² and that they should keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, for the service of the house of the LORD.

¹⁰ But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and [we have] priests ministering unto the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work:

³¹ the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

¹⁵ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets: Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.

²⁸ Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in the which the Holy Ghost hath made you bishops, to feed the church of God, which he purchased with his own blood. ²⁹ I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock; ³⁰ and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. ³¹ Wherefore watch ye, remembering that by the space of three years I ceased not to admonish every one night and day with tears.

¹³ Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. ¹⁴ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. ¹⁵ Be diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy progress may be manifest unto all. ¹⁶ Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.

² preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

²¹ Take ye heed of him, and hearken unto his voice; provoke him not: for he will not pardon your transgression; for my name is in him. ²² But if thou shalt indeed hearken unto his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.

³² Thus was finished all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting: and the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

⁴³ And Moses saw all the work, and, behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done it: and Moses blessed them.

¹⁶ Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

³² when they went into the tent of meeting, and when they came near unto the altar, they washed: as the LORD commanded Moses.

³² What thing soever I command you, that shall ye observe to do: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

²² And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
