¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed. ² I [counsel thee], Keep the king’s command, and that in regard of the oath of God. ³ Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him. ⁴ Because the king’s word [hath] power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou? ⁵ Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man’s heart discerneth time and judgment: ⁶ for to every purpose there is a time and judgment; because the misery of man is great upon him: ⁷ for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be? ⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in [that] war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it. ⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: [there is] a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt. ¹⁰ And withal I saw the wicked buried, and they came [to the grave]; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity. ¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. ¹² Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and prolong his [days], yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: ¹³ but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, [which are] as a shadow; because he feareth not before God. ¹⁴ There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be righteous men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. ¹⁵ Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him in his labour [all] the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun. ¹⁶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:) ¹⁷ then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however much a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea moreover, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

⁸ And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell it me, I pray you.

¹⁵ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that when thou hearest a dream thou canst interpret it. ¹⁶ And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

³⁸ And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is? ³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou:

²⁹ And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of the testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone by reason of his speaking with him. ³⁰ And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

⁵⁰ a nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:

²³ If there be with him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man what is right for him;

⁶ To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

⁸ Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. ⁹ She shall give to thine head a chaplet of grace: a crown of beauty shall she deliver to thee.

²⁴ Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding: but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

⁵ A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might.

¹³ Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. ¹⁴ The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

²⁸ but there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and he hath made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these: ²⁹ as for thee, O king, thy thoughts came [into thy mind] upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets hath made known to thee what shall come to pass. ³⁰ But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but to the intent that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that thou mayest know the thoughts of thy heart.

⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, sing thou hast been able to reveal this secret.

¹⁸ This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen: and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. ¹⁹ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries.

² and he was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.

¹³ Now when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

²⁹ And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness,

¹⁵ And all that sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

¹³ Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. ¹⁴ Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged. ¹⁵ But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, and he himself is judged of no man. ¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

¹⁹ And on my behalf, that utterance may be given unto me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me; that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

²⁰ knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation.

¹¹ the oath of the LORD shall be between them both, whether he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods; and the owner thereof shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution.

⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

⁴³ Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?

²⁴ And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.

²¹ My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: [and] meddle not with them that are given to change:

¹³ and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land: ¹⁴ that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand. ¹⁵ But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape? ¹⁶ As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. ¹⁷ Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, when they cast up mounts and build forts, to cut off many persons. ¹⁸ For he hath despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet hath done all these things; he shall not escape. ¹⁹ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, I will even bring it upon his own head. ²⁰ And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me.

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God. ² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: ⁴ for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. ⁵ Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience sake.

¹ Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work,

¹³ Be subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; ¹⁴ or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well. ¹⁵ For so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: ¹⁶ as free, and not using your freedom for a cloke of wickedness, but as bondservants of God. ¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

⁵⁰ And Adonijah feared because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. ⁵¹ And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me this day that he wilt not slay his servant with the sword. ⁵² And Solomon said, If he shall shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die.

²¹ And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife. ²² And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah. ²³ Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life. ²⁴ Now therefore as the LORD liveth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it. ¹⁵ In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

³¹ The greyhound; the he-goat also; and the king, against whom there is no rising up.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding allayeth great offences.

⁴ Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;

¹⁶ As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee. ¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

¹⁹ and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.

⁸ And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much. ⁹ But Peter [said] unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.

²⁵ And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him, that he died.

²⁹ And it was told king Solomon, Joab is fled unto the Tent of the LORD, and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him. ³⁰ And Benaiah came to the Tent of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me. ³¹ And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father’s house. ³² And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew it not, [to wit], Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. ³³ So shall their blood return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but unto David, and unto his seed, and unto his house, and unto his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD. ³⁴ Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

⁴⁶ So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

¹² Behold, he seizeth [the prey], who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?

¹² Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just; for God is greater than man. ¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

¹⁸ Is it [fit] to say to a king, [Thou art] vile? [or] to nobles, [Ye are] wicked? ¹⁹ [How much less to] him that respecteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

¹² The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

² The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.

¹⁵ Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, [well]: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

⁴ And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them which kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. ⁵ But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?

¹⁷ But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

²⁰ And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. ²¹ And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

³² And of the children of Issachar, men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

⁶ Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

¹⁴ The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

² I [counsel thee], Keep the king’s command, and that in regard of the oath of God.

² A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment; because he was content to walk after the command.

⁵⁶ Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time? ⁵⁷ And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

²⁵ And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you rather than unto God, judge ye:

²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.

⁵ Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience sake. ⁶ For for this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God’s service, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

¹⁴ Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged. ¹⁵ But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, and he himself is judged of no man.

⁹ And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; ¹⁰ so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ;

⁹ For this cause we also, since the day we heard [it], do not cease to pray and make request for you, that ye may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

¹⁴ But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

¹³ And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous of that which is good? ¹⁴ But and if ye should suffer for righteousness’ sake, blessed [are ye]: and fear not their fear, neither be troubled;

¹ To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

¹¹ He hath made every thing beautiful in its time: also he hath set the world in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end.

¹⁷ I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

¹³ Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? ¹⁴ In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath even made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out any thing [that shall be] after him.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. ¹² As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. ¹³ The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the peoples. ¹⁴ The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and the princes thereof: It is ye that have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses:

¹² And in that day did the Lord, the LORD of hosts, call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: ¹³ and behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die. ¹⁴ And the LORD of hosts revealed himself in mine ears, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.

²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he shall answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are;

²⁶ And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, even so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. ²⁷ They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise even as it came to pass in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; ²⁹ but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all: ³⁰ after the same manner shall it be in the day that the Son of man is revealed.

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known in this day, even thou, the things which belong unto peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. ⁴³ For the days shall come upon thee, when thine enemies shall cast up a bank about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, ⁴⁴ and shall dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

⁷ Wherefore, even as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye shall hear his voice, ⁸ Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the temptation in the wilderness, ⁹ Wherewith your fathers tempted [me] by proving [me], And saw my works forty years. ¹⁰ Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do alway err in their heart: But they did not know my ways; ¹¹ As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.

²² For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the destruction of them both?

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.

²² Wherefore I saw that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him [back] to see what shall be after him?

¹² For who knoweth what is good for man in [his] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹² For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so, are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

¹⁴ A fool also multiplieth words: [yet] man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?

⁴⁴ Therefore be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

⁵⁰ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not,

⁶ But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterward come also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. ¹² But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. ¹³ Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

¹ But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. ² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. ³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

¹ When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. ² And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, ³ and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them; ⁴ for the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. ⁵ And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. ⁶ And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof. ⁷ And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. ⁸ And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart melt as his heart.

¹⁴ For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

¹⁵ And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with thee, and thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

¹⁴ If he set his heart upon man, [if] he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;

¹⁷ The wicked shall return to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God.

⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: ⁸ (For the redemption of their soul is costly, and must be let alone for ever:) ⁹ That he should still live alway, that he should not see corruption.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah ⁶ The righteous also shall see [it], and fear, and shall laugh at him, [saying], ⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places: thou castest them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image. ²¹ For my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins: ²² So brutish was I, and ignorant; I was [as] a beast before thee. ²³ Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden my right hand. ²⁴ Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. ²⁵ Whom have I in heaven [but thee]? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. ²⁶ My flesh and my heart faileth: [but] God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. ²⁷ For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. ²⁸ But it is good for me to draw near unto God: I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all thy works.

⁴⁸ What man is he that shall live and not see death, that shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah

³² The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

²¹ Who knoweth the spirit of man whether it goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast whether it goeth downward to the earth?

¹⁵ Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

¹⁸ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

⁴³ it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

⁴ for he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth through the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him through the power of God toward you.

²⁷ And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this [cometh] judgment;

⁵ And it was told the king of Egypt that the people were fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was changed towards the people, and they said, What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us? ⁶ And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him: ⁷ and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over all of them. ⁸ And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel, for the children of Israel went out with an high hand. ⁹ And the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses [and] chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.

²⁸ And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, even all the host of Pharaoh that went in after them into the sea; there remained not so much as one of them.

³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day.

¹⁰ Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory thereof, and abide at home; for why shouldest thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ¹¹ But Amaziah would not hear. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ¹² And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent.

⁷ And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁰ I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

⁷ Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun. ⁸ There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, [saith he], do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

⁸ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for one higher than the high regardeth; and there be higher than they.

¹³ There is a grievous evil, which I have seen under the sun, [namely], riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt:

²⁵ I turned about, and my heart [was set] to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason [of things], and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness:

³⁴ And when he was come in, he did eat and drink; and he said, See now to this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter. ³⁵ And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.

¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away?

³² Yet shall he be borne to the grave, and shall keep watch over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and all men shall draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

¹² I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

¹ A Song of Ascents; of David. I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go unto the house of the LORD. ² Our feet are standing within thy gates, O Jerusalem; ³ Jerusalem, that art builded as a city that is compact together: ⁴ Whither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the LORD [for] a testimony unto Israel, to give thanks into the name of the LORD. ⁵ For there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹¹ There is no remembrance of the former [generations]; neither shall there be any remembrance of the latter [generations] that are to come, among those that shall come after.

¹⁶ For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been already forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool!

⁵ For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

¹³ O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed; they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.

¹³ and set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against this holy place, and the law:

³⁸ But my righteous one shall live by faith: And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.

¹⁵ But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken.

³² And Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go.

¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ Yet they said unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

⁶ He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved: to all generations I shall not be in adversity.

²¹ These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: [but] I will reprove thee, and set [them] in order before thine eyes. ²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver:

¹⁸ Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope: ¹⁹ that say, Let him make speed, let him hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

¹⁰ Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness will he deal wrongfully, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.

¹¹ And of whom hast thou been afraid and in fear, that thou liest, and hast not remembered me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of long time, and fearest me not?

¹⁵ now therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah: thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, If ye wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;

¹¹ Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remaineth in him, and his scent is not changed.

⁴⁹ and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken; ⁵⁰ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not,

⁴ Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? ⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

³ knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts, ⁴ and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. ⁵ For this they wilfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God; ⁶ by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷ but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. ⁸ But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ⁹ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. ¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

²⁵ Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD.

⁵ Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did unto me, even what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. ⁶ Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. ⁷ But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom thy brother. ⁸ And, behold, there is with thee Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword. ⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless, for thou art a wise man; and thou wilt know what thou oughtest to do unto him, and thou shalt bring his hoar head down to the grave with blood.

²⁵ (But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to do that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

³⁴ And a certain man drew his bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am sore wounded. ³⁵ And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians, and died at even: and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot.

³⁰ Tremble before him, all the earth: the world also is stablished that it cannot be moved.

¹¹ But the meek shall inherit the land; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

¹⁸ The LORD knoweth the days of the perfect: and their inheritance shall be for ever. ¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the time of evil: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

⁹ O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: tremble before him, all the earth.

¹ Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

¹³ He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

³² For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.

²¹ Evil pursueth sinners: but the righteous shall be recompensed with good.

¹⁴ I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God hath done it, that men should fear before him.

¹⁶ And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that he laboureth for the wind?

¹⁵ All this have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth [his life] in his evil-doing.

¹⁸ It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

¹⁰ Say ye of the righteous, that [it shall be] well [with him]: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

¹³ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: ¹⁴ behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

²⁰ There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old, and the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. ²¹ And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. ²² They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree shall be the days of my people, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. ²³ They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for calamity; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. ²⁴ And it shall come to pass that, before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

³⁴ Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

⁵⁰ And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him.

⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

²² What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction:

⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ Oh remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.

² He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

⁵ The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths; and mine age is as nothing before thee: surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

⁴ Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

²¹ There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

¹⁸ Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

⁴⁹ So shall it be in the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the righteous, ⁵⁰ and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁹ And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done ill, unto the resurrection of judgment.

¹⁴ whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.

²² It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slay suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if [it be] not [he], who then is it?

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, wax mighty in power?

¹⁷ How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? that their calamity cometh upon them? that [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger? ¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away? ¹⁹ [Ye say], God layeth up his iniquity for his children. Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it. ²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction, and let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty. ²¹ For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst? ²² Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high. ²³ One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet: ²⁴ His breasts are full of milk, and the marrow of his bones is moistened. ²⁵ And another dieth in bitterness of soul, and never tasteth of good. ²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust, and the worm covereth them. ²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt? ²⁹ Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens? ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? that they are led forth to the day of wrath? ³¹ Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done? ³² Yet shall he be borne to the grave, and shall keep watch over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and all men shall draw after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth only falsehood?

²¹ He devoureth the barren that beareth not; and doeth not good to the widow. ²² He draweth away the mighty also by his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life. ²³ [God] giveth them to be in security, and they rest thereon; and his eyes are upon their ways. ²⁴ They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone; yea, they are brought low, they are taken out of the way as all other, and are cut off as the tops of the ears of corn. ²⁵ And if it be not so now, who will prove me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹² Behold, these are the wicked; and, being alway at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocency; ¹⁴ For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

⁴ Then I saw all labour and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

⁸ There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, [saith he], do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

¹ For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this; that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them. ² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. ³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.

⁵ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

¹ Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet would I reason the cause with thee: wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they at ease that deal very treacherously?

¹⁵ And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and are delivered.

²⁴ There is nothing better for a man [than] that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.

¹² I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live. ¹³ And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labour, is the gift of God.

¹⁸ Behold, that which I have seen to be good and to be comely is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labour, wherein he laboureth under the sun, all the days of his life which God hath given him: for this is his portion.

⁷ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works. ⁸ Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack ointment. ⁹ Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun.

³ forbidding to marry, [and commanding] to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth. ⁴ For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving:

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

⁴⁰ Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from mine eyes.

² It is vain for you that ye rise up early, and so late take rest, and eat the bread of toil: [for] so he giveth unto his beloved sleep.

¹³ And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven: it is a sore travail that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

²³ For all his days are [but] sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity.

¹² The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the fulness of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

⁷ for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be?

⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: [there is] a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt.

⁹ Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number:

⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? ⁸ It is high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know? ⁹ The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁵ Many, O LORD my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be set in order unto thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

¹⁶ When I thought how I might know this, it was too painful for me;

²⁴ O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

³ And I have not learned wisdom, neither have I the knowledge of the Holy One. ⁴ Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in his garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou knowest?

²³ All this have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. ²⁴ That which is is far off, and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

⁵ As thou knowest not what is the way of the wind, [nor] how the bones [do grow] in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the work of God who doeth all.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!
