² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; my sore bled in the night and ceased not; my soul refused to be comforted.

⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cows and the camels, into two bands ⁸ and said, If Esau comes to the one company and smites it, then the other company which is left shall escape. ⁹ ¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said unto me, Return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee. ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which thou hast showed unto thy slave; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan and now I am become two bands. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him lest he come and smite me and the mother with the children. ¹² And thou hast said, I will surely do thee good and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

²⁸ And he said, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

³ to say unto him, Thus hath Hezekiah said, This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and blasphemy, for the sons are come to the place of breaking forth, and she that gives birth has no strength. ⁴ Peradventure, the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria, his master, has sent to reproach the living God and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God has heard; therefore, lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

¹⁵ And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, saying, O LORD God of Israel, who dwellest above the cherubim, thou alone art the God unto all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth. ¹⁶ Incline, O LORD, thy ear and hear; open, O LORD, thine eyes and see and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God. ¹⁷ Of a truth, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the Gentiles and their lands ¹⁸ and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood or stone; therefore, they have destroyed them. ¹⁹ Now, therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save us now out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou alone art the LORD God. ²⁰ ¶ Then Isaiah, the son of Amoz, sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said, That which thou hast prayed to me regarding Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

²⁸ If there should be famine in the land, or if there should be pestilence, if there should be blasting, or mildew, locusts, or caterpillars; if their enemies besiege them in the cities of their land; whatever affliction or sickness there may be;

¹ ¶ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry ² and came before the king’s gate; for no one was allowed to enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth. ³ And in each province, wherever the king’s commandment and his law came, there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes. ⁴ So Esther’s maids and her eunuchs came and told her. Then the queen was grieved exceedingly, and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him; but he did not receive it.

¹³ ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him;

² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled. ³ My soul is also greatly troubled; but thou, O LORD, how long?

⁶ In my distress I called upon the LORD and cried unto my God; he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease, and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am feeble and sore broken; I roar by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

¹⁵ and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

⁶ When I remember thee upon my bed and meditate on thee in the night watches.

⁷ In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee, for thou wilt answer me.

¹ A Prayer of the poor in spirit,
when he is overwhelmed, and pours out his complaint before the LORD. ¶ Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. ² Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me; in the day when I call, answer me speedily.

¹⁴ ¶ The spirit of man will bear his infirmity, but a broken spirit who can bear?

⁵ Why should I chastise you any more? Ye will revolt more and more; every head is sick, and every heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in him; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

⁹ With my soul I desire thee in the night; yea, even as long as the spirit is within me I will seek thee early: for as long as thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.

¹⁶ LORD, in the tribulation they have sought thee, they poured out prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

¹⁵ Thus hath the LORD said; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her sons, she refused to be comforted regarding her sons, because they perished.

¹³ And Ephraim shall see his sickness and Judah his wound; then Ephraim shall go to the Assyrian and shall send to King Jareb; yet he shall not be able to heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

¹ ¶ Come, and let us return unto the LORD; for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has smitten, and he will bind us up.

⁷ And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me above measure, there is given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. ⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, was heard because of his reverent fear;
