¹ ¶ The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel; ² to know wisdom and chastening; to understand prudent words; ³ to receive the chastening of prudence, justice, judgment, and equity; ⁴ to give prudence to the simple, and to the young men knowledge and council. ⁵ If the wise will hear them, doctrine shall increase, and the man of understanding shall acquire wise counsel: ⁶ To understand a parable and the interpretation; the words of the wise and their enigmas. ⁷ ¶ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and chastening. ⁸ My son, hearken unto the chastening of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be an increase of grace unto thy head and protection about thy neck. ¹⁰ ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, do not consent. ¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without cause. ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol and whole as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all kinds of riches, we shall fill our houses with spoil. ¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: ¹⁶ For their feet shall run to evil and make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. ¹⁸ And they lay in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own souls. ¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain which takes away the life of those who possess it. ²⁰ ¶ Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets: ²¹ She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words, saying, ²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge? ²³ Return at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. ²⁴ Because I have called and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one responded; ²⁵ for because ye have disregarded all my counsel and rejected my reproof: ²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes upon you; ²⁷ when what you have feared comes as destruction, and your calamity comes as a whirlwind; when tribulation and anguish come upon you. ²⁸ Then they shall call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: ²⁹ Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They rejected my counsel: they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own counsel. ³² For the rest of the ignorant shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whosoever hearkens unto me shall dwell safely and shall rest from the fear of evil.

²⁴ And David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and went in unto her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and he called his name Solomon; {Heb. peace offering}; and the LORD loved him. ²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan, the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, {Heb. beloved of the LORD}, by the LORD.

¹² ¶ Then Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was established greatly.

³¹ For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan, the Ezrahite, and Heman and Chalcol and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and he was named in all nations round about. ³² And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.

⁹ Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about, for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.

⁵ and of all my sons (for the LORD has given me many sons) he has chosen Solomon, my son, to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.

²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and glory; and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

¹ ¶ A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son is sadness unto his mother.

¹ ¶ These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

¹ ¶ The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

⁹ And the wiser the preacher became that much more did he teach wisdom to the people, causing them to listen and to search things out, and he composed many proverbs.

²⁵ I have spoken these things unto you in proverbs, but the hour comes when I shall no longer speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father.

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and rights, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do thus in the midst of the land where ye are about to enter in to possess it. ⁶ Keep them, therefore, and do them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

⁹ Give, therefore, thy slave a hearing heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this thy so great a people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing and hast not asked for thyself long life neither hast asked riches for thyself nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to hear judgment, ¹² behold, I have done according to thy words: behold, I have given thee a wise and understanding heart so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding; forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee. ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister, and call understanding thy kinswoman:

⁵ O ye simple, understand prudence; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ ¶ How much better is it to acquire wisdom than gold! and to acquire understanding is worth more than silver!

¹⁶ ¶ Of what good is the price to buy wisdom in the hand of the fool, seeing he has no heart to understand?

¹⁵ and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto saving health by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

²⁸ And all Israel heard of that judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to judge.

²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee ² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to intelligence, ³ yea, if thou criest for understanding and givest thy voice unto intelligence, ⁴ if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures, ⁵ then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom; out of his mouth comes knowledge and intelligence. ⁷ He keeps the person of the upright; he is a buckler to those that walk perfectly, ⁸ keeping the paths of judgment and the way of his merciful ones. ⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity, yea, every good path.

¹⁰ Receive my chastening and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than precious stones; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

⁷ ¶ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

¹¹ ¶ Caph Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁹ ¶ BETH. With what shall a young man cleanse his way? when he shall keep thy word.

¹³⁰ ¶ The exposition of thy words gives light; it gives understanding unto the simple.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge? ²³ Return at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

¹⁰ ¶ When wisdom enters into thine heart and knowledge is sweet unto thy soul, ¹¹ discretion shall preserve thee, intelligence shall keep thee

²¹ ¶ My son, do not let them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion,

⁷ and beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, ⁸ passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, ⁹ in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night; ¹⁰ and, behold, a woman met him with the attire of a harlot, and subtil of heart. ¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet do not abide in her house: ¹² Now without, now in the streets, she lies in wait at every corner.) ¹³ So she caught him and kissed him and with an impudent face said unto him, ¹⁴ I had promised sacrifices of peace; today I have payed my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore I came forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the husband is not at home; he is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He has taken a bag of money with him and will come home at the appointed feast day. ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield; with the flattering of her lips she persuaded him. ²² He went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, ²³ until the arrow pierces through his liver. He is as a bird struggling in the snare and not knowing that it is against his own life. ²⁴ ¶ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye sons, and attend to the words of my mouth.

¹² ¶ I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I invent the knowledge of giving counsel.

¹⁷ I love those that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me.

³² ¶ Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye sons; for blessed are those that keep my ways.

⁴ whosoever is simple, let him turn in here; as for those that lack understanding, {Heb. lacking of heart}, she saith unto him, ⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. ⁶ Forsake that which is foolish and live and go in the way of understanding.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

⁸ And a highway shall be there and a way, and it shall be called The Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; and for those in it there shall be someone to go with them, in such a manner that the foolish shall not err therein.

²² ¶ Flee also youthful lusts, but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with those that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁶ Young men likewise exhort to be temperate;

³² ¶ Then David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel who sent thee this day to meet me; ³³ and blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood and from avenging myself with my own hand.

¹⁶ And as the prophet was speaking these things unto him, he said unto him, Art thou appointed as the king’s counsel? Forbear; why should thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare and said, I know that God has determined to destroy thee because thou hast done this and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

¹⁰ ¶ Therefore, hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁶ ¶ If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

³⁴ The men of understanding will say as I say, and the wise man will hearken unto me.

⁹⁸ ¶ Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies, for they are eternal unto me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for thy testimonies have been my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders because I keep thy precepts.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹ ¶ Whosoever loves chastening loves knowledge, but he that hates reproof is carnal.

¹⁵ ¶ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

⁸ With him I will speak mouth to mouth and by sight not by enigmas; he shall see the similitude of the LORD. Why then were ye not afraid to speak against my slave Moses?

⁴ I will incline mine ear to a parable; I will declare my enigma upon the harp.

² I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter enigmas of old,

¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads and as nails hammered into place, those of the teachers of the congregations, who are placed under one Shepherd.

¹⁰ Then the disciples came and said unto him, Why dost thou speak unto them in parables? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have in abundance; but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that which he has. ¹³ Therefore, I speak to them in parables because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which says, By hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see and shall not perceive; ¹⁵ for this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and should understand with their heart and should be converted, and I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see and have not seen them and to hear those things which ye hear and have not heard them.

³⁴ Jesus spoke all these things unto the multitude in parables and said nothing unto them without parables ³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

⁵¹ Jesus said unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They answered unto him, Yes, Lord. ⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, a husband of a house, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

¹¹ And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but unto those that are without, all these things are done in parables,

³⁴ But without a parable he did not speak unto them; and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

³⁰ And Philip ran there to him and heard him read the prophet Isaiah and said, Dost thou understand what thou readest? ³¹ And he said, How can I, except someone should guide me? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.

¹⁴ But strong food belongs to those that are perfect, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

¹⁶ in almost all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, among which are some things that are hard to understand, which those that are ignorant and unstable twist, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, that the fear of the Lord, is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹² and say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof ¹³ and have not obeyed the voice of those who chastened me, nor inclined my ear to those that instructed me!

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

⁵ ¶ The fool despises his father’s chastening, but he that regards reproof shall become prudent.

³³ ¶ The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, and before honour is humility.

² ¶ A fool has no delight in understanding, but in that which his own heart discovers.

¹³ ¶ The conclusion of the entire sermon is heard: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole happiness of man.

¹⁸ He that believes on him is not condemned, but he that does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness more than the light because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. ²¹ But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a perverse understanding, to do those things which are not convenient,

³ Ye shall fear, every man his mother and his father and keep my sabbaths. I AM your God.

¹⁸ ¶ When anyone has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them, ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him and bring him out unto the elders of his city and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not hear our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall die; so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear and fear.

²⁵ If one man sins against another, the judges shall judge him, but if someone sins against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they did not hearken unto the voice of their father because the LORD had already decided to kill them.

¹⁰ ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, do not consent.

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee

¹ ¶ Hearken, ye sons, unto the chastening of the father, and pay attention that ye might know understanding. ² For I give you good doctrine; do not forsake my law. ³ For I was my father’s son, tender and unique in the sight of my mother. ⁴ He taught me and said unto me, Sustain thine heart with my words; keep my commandments, and live.

¹ ¶ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my intelligence; ² that thou may keep council and that thy lips may conserve knowledge.

²⁰ ¶ My son, keep thy father’s commandment and forsake not the law of thy mother:

¹ ¶ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises the teaching of his mother, the ravens shall pluck it out of the river, and the young eagles shall eat it.

¹ ¶ The words of King Lemuel, the prophecy with which his mother taught him.

² And, behold, they brought him a paralyzed man, lying on a bed; and Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the paralyzed man, Trust, son; thy sins are forgiven thee.

²² But Jesus turned around, and when he saw her, he said, Trust, daughter; thy faith has made thee free. And the woman was free from that hour.

⁵ when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois and thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also.

⁴² Then Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand and put it upon Joseph’s hand and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck;

²² so shall they be life unto thy soul and grace to thy neck.

⁹ She shall give to thine head an increase of grace; a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

²⁰ ¶ My son, keep thy father’s commandment and forsake not the law of thy mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart and tie them about thy neck.

¹⁰ Thy cheeks are beautiful between the earrings, thy neck between the necklaces.

⁹ Thou hast taken hold of my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast imprisoned my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

¹⁹ the chains and the jewels and the bracelets,

¹¹ I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy arms and a chain on thy neck.

⁷ The king cried in a loud voice that they bring in the magicians, the Chaldeans, and the fortune-tellers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold about his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

¹⁶ And I have heard of thee, that thou canst declare that which is in doubt and unravel difficulties: now if thou canst read this writing and show me its interpretation, thou shalt be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold about thy neck and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.

²⁹ Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold about his neck and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

⁹ ¶ In like manner also that the women adorn themselves in an honest manner, with shyness and modesty, not with ostentatious hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing ¹⁰ but with good works (as becomes women professing godliness).

³ Let their adorning not be outward with ostentatious hairdos and wearing of gold nor in composition of apparel, ⁴ but let the interior adorning of the heart be without corruption, and of an agreeable spirit and peaceful, which is precious in the sight of God.

⁷ ¶ And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. ⁸ But he refused and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand; ⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but thee because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? ¹⁰ And it came to pass as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not hearken unto her, to lie by her or to be with her. ¹¹ And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business, and none of those of the house were there within. ¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me; and he left his garment in her hand and fled and got outside. ¹³ ¶ And it came to pass when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled forth,

⁸ thou shalt not consent with him nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him; neither shalt thou have compassion; neither shalt thou conceal him,

¹⁶ And it came to pass that, pressing and grinding him daily with her words, his soul was reduced unto mortal anguish. ¹⁷ Therefore, he told her all his heart and said unto her, A razor has never come upon my head, for I am a Nazarite of God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak and be like any other man. ¹⁸ ¶ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the cardinals of the Philistines, saying, Come up this time, for he has showed me all his heart. Then the cardinals of the Philistines came up unto her and brought the money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she caused him to sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep and said, This time I will go out like before and escape; not knowing that the LORD had departed from him. ²¹ But the Philistines took hold of him and put out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with fetters of iron that he should grind in the prison house.

¹ ¶ Blessed is the man that does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful.

¹⁸ When thou didst see a thief, then thou didst consent with him and hast been partaker with adulterers.

²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield; with the flattering of her lips she persuaded him. ²² He went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, ²³ until the arrow pierces through his liver. ²⁰ ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

²⁹ ¶ The evil man flatters his neighbour and leads him into the way that is not good.

¹⁹ ¶ He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.

¹⁸ For they that are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly and by smooth words and blessings deceive the hearts of the simple.

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places he murders the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he catches the poor when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches and hides himself, and many are those who fall under his power.

¹² like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

⁷ For without cause they have hid their net for me in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul.

⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they attempt to hide the snares; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; they perfect and put into effect that which they have invented in the inward thought of each one of them and that which they have devised in their heart.

¹⁶ For their feet shall run to evil and make haste to shed blood.

¹⁸ And they lay in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own souls.

⁶ ¶ The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

¹⁴ There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their molars as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the destitute from among men.

²⁶ For among my people were found wicked men: they lay in wait as he that sets snares; they set a trap of perdition to catch men.

¹⁹ But I was like a ram or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; for I did not understand that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living that his name may no longer be remembered.

¹⁸ ¶ Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not consider any of his words. ¹⁹ Consider me, O LORD, and hear the voice of those that contend with me. ²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them and to turn away thy wrath from them.

² The merciful man of the earth is missing: and there is no one upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt each man his brother with a net.

³ Then the princes of the priests and the scribes and the elders of the people assembled together in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ and took counsel that they might take Jesus by guile and kill him.

²⁵ But this comes to pass that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

¹⁵ Now therefore ye with the council signify to the tribunal that he bring him down unto you tomorrow, as though ye would enquire something more certain concerning him, and we, before he arrives, are ready to kill him.

³ asking for grace against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, they placing an ambush in the way to kill him.

³⁰ But if the LORD does a new thing and the earth opens her mouth and swallows them up with all their things and they go down alive into Sheol, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the LORD. ³¹ And it came to pass as he had made an end of speaking all these words that the ground broke open under them; ³² the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their houses and all the men of Korah and all their goods. ³³ They and all that they had went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the congregation.

¹⁰ And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men and they became an example.

⁹ For there is no uprightness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent unto me lest, if thou be silent unto me, I become like those that go down into the grave.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it; let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

¹ To the Overcomer upon:
The silent dove in a distant land, Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath. ¶ Be merciful unto me, O God, for man would swallow me up; he oppresses me fighting me daily. ² My enemies would daily swallow me up, for they are many that fight against me, O thou most High.

³ He shall send from the heavens and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.

³ then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

⁷ ¶ Hear me speedily, O LORD; my spirit fails; hide not thy face from me lest I be like those that go down into the grave.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his belly with my delicates; he has cast me out.

⁵ He The Lord was as an enemy, he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all her palaces; he has dissipated his strong holds and has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁶ Pe All thine enemies opened their mouths regarding thee; they whistled and gnashed their teeth; they said, Swallow her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found it, we have seen it.

² Who hate the good, and love the evil, who steal their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ and eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips,

² Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks and feed thereof. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain which takes away the life of those who possess it.

¹³ For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples: and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have taken control over all the earth; and there was no one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him. Is this not to know me? said the LORD. ¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent blood and for oppression and for violence, to do it.

¹² The lion tore in pieces enough for his whelps and strangled for his lionesses and filled his holes with prey and his dens with robbery.

⁹ The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, said the LORD of the hosts, and in this place I will give peace, said the LORD of the hosts.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁹ ¶ And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city; for in one hour is thy judgment come! ¹¹ And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: ¹² The merchandise of gold and of silver and of precious stones and of pearls and of fine linen and of purple and of silk and of scarlet and of all thyine wood and of all manner vessels of ivory and of all manner vessels of most precious wood and of brass and of iron and of marble ¹³ and cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oil and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and of sheep, and of horses, and of chariots and of bodies and souls of men. ¹⁴ And the fruits of the desire of thy soul are departed from thee, and all the fat and excellent things are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. ¹⁵ The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, ¹⁶ and saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls!

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I have hated the congregation of evil doers and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁰¹ ¶ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

¹⁴ ¶ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left; remove thy foot from evil.

⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and do not come near the door of her house,

⁶ Forsake that which is foolish and live and go in the way of understanding.

¹⁰ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said unto this people, Thus have they loved to move, nor have they refrained their feet; therefore the LORD does not have them in his will; he will now remember their iniquity and visit their sins.

¹⁷ Therefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing; and I will receive you

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil,

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are their paths.

⁵ And if our iniquity commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Shall for this reason God be unjust who sends punishment? (I speak as a man.)

¹¹ who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

²³ until the arrow pierces through his liver. He is as a bird struggling in the snare and not knowing that it is against his own life.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s crib; but Israel does not know, my people do not have understanding.

⁷ Even the stork in the heaven knows her appointed time; and the turtle dove and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people did not know the judgment of the LORD.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

¹⁴ Behold, he travails with iniquity and has conceived of his own work and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He made a pit and deepened it and shall fall into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His work shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁶ The LORD is known by the judgment which he has executed; the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion (meditate on this for ever). Selah.

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of the grave; bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in thee.

²² His own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins. ²³ He shall die because he did not submit to chastening; and due to the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead are there and that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁷ ¶ A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee all the way to the grave, and no one shall sustain him.

⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? Thou shalt see to it. ⁵ And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself.

¹¹ And Joab replied unto the man that told him, Behold, when thou didst see him, why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? I would have given thee ten shekels of silver and a girdle. ¹² And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in my hand, yet I would not put forth my hand against the king’s son, for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom. ¹³ Otherwise, I should have wrought falsehood against my own soul (for there is no matter hid from the king), and thou thyself would have set thyself against me.

²⁰ ¶ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman, this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought. As the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him and said, Is there no peace? ²² And he said, Peace. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now two young men of the sons of the prophets came to me from Mount Ephraim; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver and two changes of garments. ²³ And Naaman said, If you wish take two talents. And he urged him and bound two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of garments and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bore them before him. ²⁴ And when he came to a secret place, he took them from their hand and bestowed them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed. ²⁵ But when he went in and stood before his master, Elisha said unto him, From where comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went nowhere. ²⁶ Then he said unto him, Did not my heart go with thee when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money and to receive garments and oliveyards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and menslaves and maidslaves? ²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners;

²⁷ ¶ He that is greedy of gain troubles his own house, but he that hates gifts shall live.

³ Do not be desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food. ⁴ ¶ Do not labour to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.

¹³ There is another sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt;

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent blood and for oppression and for violence, to do it. ¹⁸ Therefore thus hath the LORD said concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! and Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! ¹⁹ He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that devise iniquity and fabricate evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they put it into effect because they have power in their hands. ² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage. ³ Therefore thus hath the LORD said; Behold, I devise an evil against this family, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye walk haughtily; for the time shall be evil.

¹⁰ that build up Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity; ¹¹ the heads thereof judge for bribes, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they come near unto the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? No evil can come upon us. ¹² Therefore for your sake Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

⁹ Woe to him that covets ill-gotten gain by violence for his house that he may set his nest on high, that he may escape from the power of evil!

¹⁹ saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit. ²⁰ But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

³ not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain, but gentle, not contentious, not covetous;

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

¹⁴ having their eyes full of adultery, and not knowing how to cease from sin, baiting unstable souls, having their heart exercised in covetous practices; cursed sons, ¹⁵ who forsaking the right way have erred, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, ¹⁶ and was rebuked for his iniquity; a dumb animal accustomed to a yoke (upon which he was seated), speaking with man’s voice, hindered the madness of the prophet.

¹ ¶ Doth not wisdom cry, and give her voice to intelligence? ² She stands in the top of high places, by the way at the crossroads of the paths. ³ She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men. ⁵ O ye simple, understand prudence; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

³ She has sent forth her maidens; she cries upon the highest places of the city,

⁵⁴ And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished and said, From where does this man have this wisdom and these mighty works?

⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and others they shall persecute:

³⁷ ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink.

²⁴ but unto those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

³⁰ But of him ye are reborn in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

³ in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

²⁷ What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light, and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye from the housetops.

² And a great multitude was gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship and sat, and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather; and I have said nothing in secret.

²⁰ Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

³ Then Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh and said unto him, Thus hath the LORD God of the Hebrews said, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? Let my people go that they may serve me.

²⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

²⁷ How long shall I hear this evil congregation, which murmurs against me, the complaints of the sons of Israel, which they murmur against me?

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water?

⁸ Understand, ye carnal ones among the people, and, ye fools, when will ye be wise?

⁴ to give prudence to the simple, and to the young men knowledge and council.

⁷ ¶ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and chastening.

²⁹ Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

³⁴ Surely he scorns the scorners; but he gives grace unto the humble.

¹² and say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

⁷ and beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

¹⁶ Whosoever is simple, let him turn in here; and as for him that lacks understanding, she saith unto him:

⁶ ¶ The scorner sought wisdom and found it not, but wisdom comes easy unto him that understands.

¹² ¶ The scorner does not love the one that reproves him, neither will he go unto the wise.

²⁹ ¶ Judgments are prepared for scorners and stripes for the back of fools.

¹¹ ¶ When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise, and by instructing the wise, he receives wisdom.

¹³ Therefore go ye and learn what this is, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

¹⁷ Then Jesus answered and said, O unfaithful and crooked generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him here to me.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that didst kill the prophets and stone those who are sent unto thee, how often I desired to gather thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

²⁰ For every one that does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

³ ¶ knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is thirsty come; and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.

¹ David’s Psalm of praise. ¶ Aleph I will extol thee, my God, my king, and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

²⁵ for because ye have disregarded all my counsel and rejected my reproof:

³⁰ They rejected my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

²³ For the commandment is fire, and the law is light; and reproofs of chastening are the way of life,

¹⁷ ¶ He is in the way of life that gives heed to chastening, but he that refuses reproof errs.

¹ ¶ He that being often reproved hardens his neck shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy.

¹⁵ until the spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness is turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted for a forest.

⁸ Release, ye heavens, from above, and the clouds shall pour down righteous ness; let the earth open up, and let salvation and righteousness bear their fruit; let them produce fruit together; I the LORD have created it.

¹ ¶ Ho, every one that thirsts, come ye to the waters, and he that has no money; come ye, buy, and eat; come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ² Why do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. ³ Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an eternal covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁶ ¶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near: ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ Turn, O rebellious sons, said the LORD; for I am your Lord, and I will take you one of a city and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man leaves his wickedness that he has committed and lives according to judgment and righteousness, he shall cause his soul to live. ²⁸ Because he saw and left all his rebellions that he has committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. ²⁹ If even now the house of Israel should say, The way of the Lord is not straight. O house of Israel, are not my ways straight? Certainly your ways are not straight. ³⁰ ¶ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, said the Lord GOD. Repent and turn yourselves from all your iniquities, so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

¹¹ Say unto them, As I live, said the Lord GOD, I do not desire the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from his way and that he live; turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

¹ ¶ O Israel, become converted unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

²⁸ ¶ And it shall come to pass after this that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of prayer, and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn over him as one mourns for his only son, afflicting themselves over him as one afflicts himself over his firstborn.

¹³ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those that ask him?

³⁶ What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find me, and where I shall be ye shall not be able to come? ³⁷ ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink.

³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. ³⁷ ¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? ³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, for the times of refreshing of the presence of the Lord are come;

²⁰ but I announced first unto those of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

¹⁶ So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. ¹⁷ Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, ¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined in the fire, that thou may be made rich; and clothed in white raiment, so that the shame of thy nakedness not be uncovered; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou may see. ¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent.

²⁰ Thou shalt keep them in the secret place of thy face from the pride of man; thou shalt keep them in the tabernacle protected from the strife of tongues.

² for I came, and no one showed himself; I called, and no one answered. Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stink because there is no water and die for thirst.

¹² I also will destine you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter because when I called, ye did not respond; I spoke, and ye did not hear, but did evil before my eyes and did choose that which displeased me.

⁴ I also will choose their delusions and will bring their fears upon them because I called, and no one answered; I spoke, and they did not hear: but they did evil before my eyes and chose that which displeased me.

¹³ And now because ye have done all these works, said the LORD and I spoke well unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye did not hear; and I called you, but ye did not answer;

¹⁸ Therefore I will also deal in fury: my eye shall not forgive, neither will I have mercy: and they shall cry in my ears with a loud voice; yet I will not hear them.

¹¹ But they refused to hearken and pulled away the shoulder and stopped their ears that they should not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone lest they should hear the law and the words which the LORD of the hosts has sent by his Spirit by the hand of the former prophets; therefore came great wrath from the LORD of the hosts.

⁵ But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise, ⁶ and the others took his slaves and entreated them spitefully and slew them.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that didst kill the prophets and stone those who are sent unto thee, how often I desired to gather thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! ³⁸ Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

³⁰ that thou might stretch forth thine hand so that healings and signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy slave Jesus.

²¹ And against Israel he says, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

²⁵ See that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from the heavens, ²⁶ whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet even once, I shall shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

¹¹ But my people did not hearken to my voice, and Israel did not love me.

¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God and condemned the counsel of the most High:

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

¹⁴ Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your affliction.

⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.

¹⁵ Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

²⁴ ¶ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him, but God shall grant the desire of the righteous.

²⁴ For I say unto you, That none of those men which were called shall taste of my supper.

⁹ Before your pots can feel the fire of the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

²² ¶ Let their table become a snare before them, and that which should have been for their prosperity, let it become a stumbling block. ²³ Let their eyes be darkened that they see not and make their loins continually to shake. ²⁴ Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. ²⁵ Let their palace be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents. ²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and they boast that thou hast slain their enemies. ²⁷ Add iniquity unto their iniquity, and let them not come into thy righteousness. ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of the living and not be written with the righteous.

²⁵ Thou shall not be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked when it comes. ²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

²⁴ ¶ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him, but God shall grant the desire of the righteous. ²⁵ When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is founded for ever.

¹³ The peoples shall make noise like the rushing of great waters, but God shall reprehend them, and they shall flee far off and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the tumbleweed before the whirlwind.

³ The LORD is slow to anger and great in power and will not at all treat the guilty as though they were innocent; the LORD whose way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

²³ But woe unto those that are with child and to those that give suck in those days! For there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. ²⁵ Then there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars, and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; ²⁶ men’s hearts failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth; for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with excess and drunkenness and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. ³⁵ For as a snare it shall come on all those that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

⁹ Tribulation and anguish shall be upon every human soul that does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek;

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth and the princes and the rich and the captains and the strong and every slave and every free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains ¹⁶ and said to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that is seated upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand before him?

³ ¶ And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for certainly he is flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.

¹⁸ And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you, and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when the tribulation comes upon him?

¹² There they shall cry, but he shall give no answer because of the pride of those that are evil.

⁴¹ They cried out, but there was no one to save them: even unto the LORD, but he did not answer them.

³⁴ When he slew them, then they sought him, and they returned and enquired early after God. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock and the high God their redeemer. ³⁶ Nevertheless they flattered him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; likewise, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ ¶ Therefore thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by sword and by famine and by pestilence.

¹⁵ I will go and return to my place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face; in their affliction they will seek me early.

⁴ Then they shall cry unto the LORD, but he will not respond to them: he will even hide his face from them at that time because of their evil doings.

¹³ Therefore it is come to pass that as he cried and they would not hear, so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of the hosts:

²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and those that were ready went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. ¹² But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

²⁵ When once the husband of the house is risen up and shall have shut the door, and ye begin to stand without and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not from where ye are, ²⁶ then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. ²⁷ But he shall say unto you, I know you not from where ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. ²⁸ In that place shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

³ Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your pleasures.

¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

¹⁶ ¶ But unto the wicked God saith, What part hast thou to declare my statutes or that thou should take my covenant in thy mouth? ¹⁷ Seeing thou dost hate chastening and dost cast my words behind thee.

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: women shall come and set them on fire: for this is not a people of understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favour.

⁹ That this is a rebellious people, lying sons, sons that did not desire to hear the law of the LORD: ¹⁰ Who say to those that see, See not; and to the prophets, Do not prophesy right things unto us, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: ¹¹ Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to leave our presence. ¹² Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in violence and perversity and build upon this:

⁴² but only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

⁵¹ ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² Who of the prophets have your fathers not persecuted? and they have slain those who announced before the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now been the betrayers and murderers, ⁵³ who have received the law by the disposition of angels and have not kept it. ⁵⁴ ¶ When they heard these things, they were divided in their hearts and gnashed on him with their teeth.

²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,

¹¹¹ ¶ I have taken thy testimonies as a heritage for ever; for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹⁷³ ¶ Let thine hand help me, for I have chosen thy precepts.

⁹ The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I have need to go and see it; I pray thee have me excused. ¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee have me excused. ²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

⁸ Even as I have seen, those that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same.

¹⁴ ¶ The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways, and the good man shall be separated from him.

⁸ ¶ He that sows iniquity shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his anger shall fail.

¹⁰ Say unto the righteous that it shall be well with him, for they shall eat of the fruit of their doings. ¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for according to the work of his hands it shall be done unto him.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see how evil and bitter it is, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God and that my fear is lacking in thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts.

¹⁹ Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts because they have not hearkened unto my words, and they hated my law.

⁷ Do not deceive yourselves; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that sows in the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹⁵ ¶ But Jeshurun (the upright one) waxed fat and kicked; (thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou hast covered thyself) and forsook the God who made him and lightly esteemed the strong One of his saving health. ¹⁶ They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. ¹⁷ They sacrificed unto devils, not to God, to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came from nearby, whom your fathers feared not. ¹⁸ Of the strong One that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten the God that travailed for thee. ¹⁹ ¶ And when the LORD saw it, his wrath was kindled because of his sons and of his daughters. ²⁰ And he said, I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end shall be: that they are a generation of perversities, sons without faith. ²¹ They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities; and I also will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with foolish Gentiles. ²² For fire shall be kindled in my anger and shall burn unto the lowest part of Sheol and shall consume the earth with her fruit and burn up the foundations of the mountains. ²³ I will heap evils upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them. ²⁴ They shall be consumed with hunger and devoured with burning heat and with bitter destruction; I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. ²⁵ The sword without and terror within shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs. ²⁶ ¶ I said I would shatter them in pieces: I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men, ²⁷ if I did not fear the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should become vain and lest they should say, Our high hand has done this and not the LORD. ²⁸ For they are a Gentile void of counsel, neither is there any intelligence in them. ²⁹ O that they were wise, if they were prudent, they would understand their latter end! ³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two put ten thousands to flight if their strong One had not sold them, and the LORD had not delivered them up? ³¹ For their strong one is not as our strong One, and even our enemies are judges of this. ³² Therefore, their vine is of the vine of Sodom and of the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are very bitter. ³³ Their wine is the poison of dragons and the cruel venom of asps. ³⁴ Do I not have this laid up in store, sealed up in my treasuries? ³⁵ Vengeance and recompense are mine, in the time when their foot shall slide; for the day of their calamity is at hand and that which is determined upon them makes haste. ³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people and repent himself for his slaves when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up or left. ³⁷ And he shall say, Where are their gods, their strong one in whom they trusted, ³⁸ who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you, and be your protection. ³⁹ ¶ See now that I, I am he, and there are no gods with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; and there is not one that can deliver out of my hand. ⁴⁰ When I shall lift up my hand to the heavens and shall say, I live for ever, ⁴¹ if I whet the resplendence of my sword and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to my enemies and will recompense those that hate me. ⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood and my sword shall devour flesh, in the blood of the slain and of the captives of the heads, in revenge as an enemy. ⁴³ Rejoice, O ye Gentiles, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his slaves and will render vengeance to his enemies and will reconcile his land, to his people. ⁴⁴ ¶ And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hosea, the son of Nun.

⁶ A carnal man does not know, neither does a fool understand this: ⁷ ¶ The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those that hate me love death.

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity; therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed. ¹² Therefore, behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will send unto him captors that shall take him captive and shall empty his vessels and break his wineskins.

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my storehouses and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up? ²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself and is not rich in God.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented.

³⁶ He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

³⁸ Now the just shall live by faith, but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. ³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back unto perdition, but faithful unto the saving of the soul.

⁸ But if ye are without chastisement, of which all the sons are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.

²⁵ See that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from the heavens,

⁵ Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; ye have refreshed your hearts, as in the day of slaughter of sacrifices.

¹² Lamed Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. ¹³ Mem His soul shall rest in that which is good; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

¹³ Oh, if my people would hearken unto me and Israel would walk in my ways!

⁷ Mem He shall not be afraid of evil rumours; Nun his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ Samech His heart is established; he shall not be afraid, Ain until he sees his desire upon his enemies.

²¹ ¶ My son, do not let them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion, ²² so shall they be life unto thy soul and grace to thy neck. ²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

³² ¶ Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye sons; for blessed are those that keep my ways. ³³ Hearken unto chastening, and be wise; refuse it not. ³⁴ Blessed is the man that hears me, keeping vigil at my gates, waiting at the threshold of my doors. ³⁵ For whosoever finds me shall find life and shall obtain the will of the LORD.

¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

²⁶ ¶ In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence, and there his sons shall have hope.

³ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusts in thee.

¹⁸ O that thou would look unto my commandments! Then thy peace would be as a river and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:

³ Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an eternal covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁵ While he yet spoke, behold, a cloud of light overshadowed them, and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

⁹ But when ye shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified; for these things must first come to pass, but the end is not yet.

¹⁹ In your patience ye shall possess your souls.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; ²⁸ and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall anyone pluck them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the charity of Christ? shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword? ³⁶ (As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.) ³⁷ Nevertheless, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. ³⁸ Therefore I am certain that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come ³⁹ nor height nor depth nor any creature shall be able to separate us from the charity of God, which is in Christ, Jesus our Lord.

⁵ who are kept in the virtue of God by faith, to attain unto the saving health which is made ready to be manifested in the last time.
