⁶⁷ Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe;

³ and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? ⁴ Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John those things which you hear and see: ⁵ The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

⁶³ But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God. ⁶⁴ Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said it; nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven. ⁶⁵ Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. ⁶⁶ What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. ⁶⁷ Then they spit in his face and buffeted him, and others smote him with the staves, ⁶⁸ saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ; who is he that smote thee?

⁶¹ But he was silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? ⁶² And Jesus said unto him, I AM, and ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God and coming in the clouds of the heaven. ⁶³ Then the high priest rent his clothes and said, What need have we any more for witnesses? ⁶⁴ Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. ⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to buffet him and to say unto him, Prophesy. And the servants struck him with the palms of their hands. ⁶⁶ ¶ And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there came one of the maids of the high priest;

³¹ And he said unto him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

³⁹ Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are those who testify of me. ⁴⁰ And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. ⁴¹ I do not receive glory from men. ⁴² But I know you that ye have not the love of God in you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. ⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who take glory one from another, and seek not the glory that comes only from God? ⁴⁵ Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one that accuses you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. ⁴⁶ For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me. ⁴⁷ But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

⁴³ Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. ⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it. ⁴⁵ And because I tell you the truth, ye do not believe me.

²⁷ He answered them, I have told you already, and ye have heard; what more would ye hear? Do ye also desire to be his disciples? ²⁸ Then they reviled him and said, Be thou his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

²⁴ Then the Jews came round about him and said unto him, Until when wilt thou hold our soul in suspense? If thou art the Christ, tell us plainly. ²⁵ Jesus answered them, I have told you, and ye do not believe; the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. ²⁶ But ye believe not because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

³⁷ ¶ But although he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him, ³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Lord, who shall believe our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again, ⁴⁰ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their heart and be converted, and I should heal them. ⁴¹ Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory and spoke of him. ⁴² ¶ Nevertheless, even among the princes many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; ⁴³ for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
