A Psalm of David. ¶ My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me and from the words of my cry? ² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. ³ But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest in the midst of the praises of Israel. ⁴ Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. ⁵ They cried unto thee and were delivered: they trusted in thee and were not confounded. ⁶ But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men and despised of the people. ⁷ All those that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, ⁸ Turn him over to the LORD, let him deliver him, let him save him, seeing he delighted in him. ⁹ But thou art he that took me out of the womb; thou hast made me wait upon thee since I was upon my mother’s breasts. ¹⁰ I was cast upon thee from the womb; thou art my God from my mother’s belly. ¹¹ ¶ Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is no one to help. ¹² Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round about. ¹³ They opened their mouth upon me as a ravening and a roaring lion. ¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. ¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. ¹⁶ For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I may count all my bones: they look and stare upon me. ¹⁸ They part my garments among them and cast lots upon my vesture. ¹⁹ But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. ²⁰ Deliver my soul from the sword; my life from the power of the dog. ²¹ Save me from the lion’s mouth and from the horns of the unicorns. ²² ¶ I will declare thy name unto my brethren; in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee. ²³ Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. ²⁴ For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the poor in spirit; neither has he hid his face from him, but when he cried unto him, he heard. ²⁵ My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation; I will pay my vows before those that fear him. ²⁶ The poor shall eat and be satisfied: those that seek him shall praise the LORD; your heart shall live for ever. ²⁷ All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto the LORD; and all the families of the Gentiles shall worship before thee. ²⁸ For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and he shall have dominion over the Gentiles. ²⁹ All those that are fat upon earth shall eat and worship; all those that go down to the dust shall bow before him; and no one can keep his own soul alive. ³⁰ A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. ³¹ They shall come and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he has done this.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it, neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was thou, who in my estimation was, my lord, and of my own family. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together and walked unto the house of God in company. ¹⁵ Let them be condemned unto death, and let them go down alive into Sheol for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.

Shoshannim (lilies), A Psalm of David. ¶ Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. ² I sink in deep mire where there is no standing; I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. ³ I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God. ⁴ Those that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; those that would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty; then I restored that which I did not take away. ⁵ O God, thou knowest my foolishness, and my guiltiness is not hid from thee. ⁶ Do not let those that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of the hosts, be ashamed for my sake; do not let those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. ⁷ Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face. ⁸ I am become a stranger unto my brethren and an alien unto my mother’s sons. ⁹ For the zeal of thy house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those that reproached thee are fallen upon me. ¹⁰ When I wept with fasting of my soul, thou hast been a reproach unto me. ¹¹ I made sackcloth also my garment, and I became a proverb to them. ¹² They that sat in the gate spoke against me, and I was the song of the drunkards. ¹³ ¶ But I corrected my prayer unto thee, O LORD, in the time of thy good pleasure; O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy saving health. ¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not drown; let me be delivered from those that hate me and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Let not the violent force of the waters overcome me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. ¹⁶ Hear me, O LORD, for thy mercy is perceptible, look upon me according to the multitude of thy acts of compassion ¹⁷ And hide not thy face from thy slave, for I am in trouble; hear me speedily. ¹⁸ Draw near unto my soul and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies. ¹⁹ Thou hast known my reproach and my shame and my dishonour; my adversaries are all before thee. ²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness, and I looked for some to take pity, but there was no one, and for comforters, but I found none. ²¹ They also gave me gall for my food; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. ²² ¶ Let their table become a snare before them, and that which should have been for their prosperity, let it become a stumbling block. ²³ Let their eyes be darkened that they see not and make their loins continually to shake. ²⁴ Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. ²⁵ Let their palace be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents. ²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and they boast that thou hast slain their enemies. ²⁷ Add iniquity unto their iniquity, and let them not come into thy righteousness. ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of the living and not be written with the righteous. ²⁹ But I am poor and sorrowful; let thy saving health, O God, set me up on high. ³⁰ ¶ I will praise the name of God with a song and will magnify him with praises. ³¹ This also shall please the LORD better than the sacrifice of an ox or bullock that struggles with horns and hoofs. ³² The humble shall see this and be glad; seek God and thy heart shall live. ³³ For the LORD hears the destitute and does not despise his prisoners. ³⁴ Let the heavens and the earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moves in them. ³⁵ For God will protect Zion and will rebuild the cities of Judah; they shall dwell there and inherit it. ³⁶ The seed of his slaves shall inherit it, and those that love his name shall dwell therein.

⁶ ¶ Set thou the wicked man over him, and let Satan stand at his right hand. ⁷ When he shall be judged, let him be condemned, and let his prayer become sin. ⁸ Let his days be few, and let another take his office. ⁹ Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds and beg; let them seek their bread out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he has, and let the strangers spoil his labour. ¹² Let there be no one to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off, and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

¹ ¶ Who shall believe our report? and upon whom shall the arm of the LORD be manifested? ² With all this he shall grow up before him as a tender sprout and as a root out of a dry ground. There is no outward appearance in him, nor beauty. We shall see him, yet nothing attractive about him that we should desire him. ³ He is despised and rejected among men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with weakness; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. ⁴ ¶ Surely he has borne our sicknesses and suffered our pain: and we considered him stricken, smitten of God, and cast down. ⁵ But he was wounded for our rebellions; he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and by his stripes healing was provided for us. ⁶ All we like sheep have become lost; we have turned each one to his own way; and the LORD transposed in him the iniquity of us all. ⁷ He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he did not open his mouth. ⁸ He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall count his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the rebellion of my people he was smitten. ⁹ And he made his grave with the wicked, and his death with the rich; even though he had never done evil, neither was any deceit in his mouth. ¹⁰ ¶ With all this the LORD chose to bruise him; subjecting him to grief. When he shall have offered his soul for atonement, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the will of the LORD shall be prospered in his hand. ¹¹ He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied. And by his knowledge shall my righteous slave justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. ¹² Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil unto the strong because he has poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the rebellious, having born the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are determined {Heb. Cut} upon thy people and upon thy holy city to finish the prevarication and to conclude the sin and to make reconciliation for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness and seal the vision and the prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies. ²⁵ Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the word to cause the people to return and to build Jerusalem unto the Anointed {Heb. Messiah} Prince, there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks, while the street shall be built again and the wall, even in troublous times. ²⁶ And after the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One {Heb. Messiah} shall be killed and shall have nothing: (and the ruling people that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; whose end shall be as a flood, until at the end of the war it shall be cut off with desolation).

⁷ ¶ Awake, O sword, upon the pastor and upon the man that is my fellow, said the LORD of the hosts; smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn my hand upon the little ones.

²⁴ The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It had been good for that man if he had not been born.

⁵³ Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? ⁵⁴ But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be?

⁵ And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself.

²⁵ Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken; ²⁶ ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter (like this) into his glory? ²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded this unto them in all the scriptures concerning himself.

⁴⁶ and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day;

¹² While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name; those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

¹⁶ Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, who was guide to those that took Jesus. ¹⁷ For he was numbered with us, and had obtained a lot or inheritance of this ministry. ¹⁸ He, therefore, purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity; and hanging himself, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. ¹⁹ And it was known unto all the dwellers of Jerusalem, in such a manner that the field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. ²⁰ For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no one dwell therein, and let another take his office. ²¹ It behooves, therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ²² beginning from the baptism of John unto that same day that he was received on high from among us, that one must be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. ²³ And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. ²⁴ And they prayed and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of everyone, show which of these two thou hast chosen, ²⁵ that he may take the lot or inheritance of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas rebelled that he might go to his own place.

²³ him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain,

²⁵ who (in the Holy Spirit) by the mouth of thy servant David (our father) hast said, Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples imagine vain things? ²⁶ The kings of the earth were present, and the princes were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ. ²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city), ²⁸ to do that which thy hand and thy counsel had determined beforehand must be done.

²⁷ For those that dwell at Jerusalem and their princes, because they knew him not nor yet the voices of the prophets who are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. ²⁸ And without finding cause of death in him, yet they asked Pilate that he should be slain.

²² Having, therefore, obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said should come: ²³ that the Christ should suffer and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead and should show light unto this people and to the Gentiles.

³ For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received: how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures ⁴ and that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures

¹¹ searching when and in what point of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, which announced beforehand the afflictions that were to come upon the Christ, and the glory that should follow them.

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.
