¹ ¶ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. ² He comes forth like an open flower and is cut down; he flees as a shadow and does not remain. ³ And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one and bring me into judgment with thee? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one. ⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass. ⁶ If thou should leave him, he will cease to exist; until then, he shall desire, as a hireling, his day. ⁷ ¶ For there is yet hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender branch will not cease. ⁸ Though its root waxes old in the earth and its trunk is dead in the ground, ⁹ at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a new plant. ¹⁰ But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be? ¹¹ The waters from the sea went, and the river ran out, it dried up. ¹² So man lies down and does not rise; until there is no heaven, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep. ¹³ O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me covered until thy wrath is past, that thou would appoint me a set time and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time I will wait until my transformation comes. ¹⁵ Then thou shalt call, and I will answer thee; thou wilt have a desire towards the work of thine hands. ¹⁶ ¶ For now thou dost number my steps; thou dost not open up my sin. ¹⁷ My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou dost sew up my iniquity. ¹⁸ And certainly the mountain that falls is undone, and the rocks are removed out of their place. ¹⁹ The impetuous waters break the stones and wash away the dust of the earth; in like manner thou dost cause man to lose hope. ²⁰ Thou shalt be stronger than him for ever, and he passes; thou dost change his countenance and send him away. ²¹ His sons shall be honoured and he shall not know of it; or they shall be afflicted, but he shall not perceive of them. ²² But while his flesh is upon him, he shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

⁹ And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have the days of the years of my life been and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

⁷ yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

¹ ¶ Man certainly has an appointed amount of time upon earth, and his days are like the days of a hireling.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and are spent without hope.

²⁵ ¶ Now my days are swifter than a post; they fled away, they never saw good.

¹⁴ What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? Or how can he that is born of a woman be clean?

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before thee; verily every man that lives is altogether vanity. Selah.

⁵ Behold, the pain of my iniquity has caused me to writhe; my mother conceived me so that sin might be removed from me.

¹⁷ ¶ Therefore I hated life because every work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all was vanity and vexation of spirit.

²³ For all his days are only sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart does not take rest in the night. This is also vanity.

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist; notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

¹⁵ For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no other hope.

⁹ for we are but of yesterday and know nothing because our days upon earth are as a shadow.

²⁵ ¶ Now my days are swifter than a post; they fled away, they never saw good. ²⁶ They are passed away as the ships of Ebeh {Heb. reed} as the eagle that throws himself on the prey.

⁵ Thou dost cause them to pass by as the waters of a river; they are as a dream, which is strong in the morning like grass. ⁶ In the morning it blossoms and grows up; in the evening it is cut down and withers. ⁷ ¶ For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath we are troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. ⁹ For all our days decline because of thy wrath; we end our years according to the word.

⁷ ¶ The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

¹² The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

¹¹ My days are like a shadow that declines, and I am withered like grass.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass; as an open flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place shall know it no more.

⁴ Man is like unto vanity; his days are as a shadow that passes away.

¹³ but it shall never be well with the wicked, neither shall his days be prolonged, which are as a shadow, because he did not fear before the presence of God.

⁶ The voice that said, Cry. And I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the mercy thereof is as the open flower of the field: ⁷ The grass withers, the flower fades because the spirit of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people is grass. ⁸ The grass withers, the open flower fades; but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

¹⁰ and he who is rich, in his low status, because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. ¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹⁴ and ye do not know what shall be tomorrow. For what is your life? Certainly it is a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

²⁴ ¶ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away,

¹⁷ ¶ What is man that thou should magnify him and that thou should set thine heart upon him ¹⁸ and that thou should visit him every morning and try him every moment?

¹⁹ If we were to speak of his strength, he is certainly strong; and if of his judgment, who shall cause us to meet? ²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, he shall prove me perverse.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together unto judgment.

²⁵ Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? Wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

²⁷ Thou dost put my feet also in the stocks and look narrowly unto all my paths; thou dost set a print upon the heels of my feet.

⁴ what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou dost visit him?

² And enter not into judgment with thy slave; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

³ LORD, what is man that thou knowest him? or the son of man, that thou esteemeth him?

¹⁹ ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

³ And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth:

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? Or how can he that is born of a woman be clean? ⁵ Behold, even the moon shall not shine, neither are the stars pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, who is as a worm, and the son of man, who is also a worm?

⁵ Thou dost cause them to pass by as the waters of a river; they are as a dream, which is strong in the morning like grass.

³⁵ And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

¹² Therefore, in the manner which sin entered into the world by one man, and because of sin, death; and so death passed upon all men in the one in whom all sinned.

⁸ So then, those that are carnal cannot please God. ⁹ But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, because the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, that person is not of him.

³ among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature the children of wrath, even as all the others.

¹⁰ In his hand is the soul of every living thing and the spirit of all flesh of man.

¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time I will wait until my transformation comes.

²¹ For what delight shall he have in his house after him, being cut off in the number of his months?

¹³ ¶ But if he determines something, who can turn him? His soul desired it, and he did it. ¹⁴ Therefore, he will finish that which is necessary for me; and there are many such things in him.

⁴ LORD, make me to know my end and the measure of my days, what it is that I may know how long I am to be of this world.

⁹ Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over, that they not turn again to cover the earth.

²⁹ Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; thou takest away their spirit, they cease to exist and return to their dust.

³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing; and in the army of heaven and in the inhabitants of the earth, he does according to his will; nor is there anyone who can interfere with his hand and say unto him, What doest thou?

²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has audited thy kingdom and finished it.

³⁰ ¶ That same night Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are determined {Heb. Cut} upon thy people and upon thy holy city to finish the prevarication and to conclude the sin and to make reconciliation for iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness and seal the vision and the prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies.

³⁶ And the king shall do according to his will, and he shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god and shall speak marvels against the God of gods and shall prosper until the indignation is accomplished, for the determination has been made.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²⁶ and has made of one blood all the lineage of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and has determined the seasons (which he has limited) and the bounds of their habitation;

²⁷ And as it is appointed unto men to die once, and after this the judgment;

¹⁸ and he that lives and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen, and have the keys of Hades and of death.

⁷ ¶ And to the angel of the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} in Philadelphia write; These things, saith he that is Holy and True, he who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts and shuts, and no one opens;

¹ ¶ Man certainly has an appointed amount of time upon earth, and his days are like the days of a hireling. ² As a slave earnestly desires the shade and as a hireling waits for rest from his work,

¹⁶ I loathed life; I do not desire to live for ever; let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹⁹ For how long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone until I swallow down my spittle?

²⁰ Are not my days few? Cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength before I go from here and be no more.

¹ ¶ For the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, the husband of a house, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. ² And when he had agreed with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. ³ And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace ⁴ and said unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you. And they went. ⁵ Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour and did likewise. ⁶ And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle and said unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? ⁷ They say unto him, Because no one has hired us. He said unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatever is right, that shall ye receive. ⁸ So when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, Call the labourers and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

¹⁰ He has pulled me up on every side, and I am dried up; he has caused my hope to pass like an uprooted tree.

¹ ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

⁶ Days shall come when Jacob shall take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and the face of the world shall be filled with fruit.

¹⁵ nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and of brass shall he be bound in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

²³ And regarding that which the king saw, one who was a watchman and holy who came down from heaven and said, Hew the tree down and destroy it; yet leave the stump of its roots in the earth, and with a band of iron and of brass let it remain bound in the green grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field until seven times pass over him: ²⁴ this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: ²⁵ that they shall drive thee from among men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall feed thee with grass of the field as the oxen, and with the dew of heaven shalt thou be bathed, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou shalt understand that the most High takes rule over the kingdom of men and that he shall give it to whoever he will.

¹⁹ Thy dead shall live, and together with my body they shall arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the covering of light, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.

³⁶ Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not brought to life, unless it dies first;

³ and say: Thus hath the Lord GOD said, A great eagle with great wings and long members, full of feathers of diverse colours, came unto Lebanon and took the highest branch of the cedar: ⁴ he cropped off the principal shoot and carried it into a land of markets; he set it in the city of the merchants. ⁵ He also took of the seed of the land and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters and set it as a willow tree. ⁶ And it grew and became a vine of many branches, low of stature, whose branches looked at him, and its roots were under him: so it became a vine and brought forth branches and shot forth sprigs. ⁷ There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers; and, behold, this vine joined her roots toward him and extended her branches toward him that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation. ⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters that it might bring forth branches and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine. ⁹ Say thou: Thus hath the Lord GOD said, Shall it be prospered? Shall he not pull it up its roots and destroy its fruit and let it wither? All of the leaves of her spring shall wither, even without great power or many people plucking it up by its roots. ¹⁰ Yea, behold, being planted, shall it be prospered? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It shall wither in the furrows where it grew.

²² ¶ Thus hath the Lord GOD said: I will also take of the highest branch of that high cedar and will set it up; I will crop off from the principal branch a shoot and will plant it upon the high and sublime mountain: ²³ in the high mountain of Israel I will plant it, and it shall bring forth boughs and bear fruit and become a magnificent cedar; and under it shall dwell every fowl; everything that flies shall dwell in the shadow of its branches. ²⁴ And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

¹⁰ ¶ Thy mother was like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters, bearing fruit and spreading forth branches by reason of the many waters.

¹⁷ And if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them and hath been made participant of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree, ¹⁸ do not boast against the branches. But if thou boast, know that thou dost not bear the root, but the root thee. ¹⁹ Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in. ²⁰ Good; because of their unbelief they were broken off, but thou by faith art standing. Do not be highminded, but fear ²¹ that if God did not forgive the natural branches, neither shall he forgive thee. ²² Behold, therefore, the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity, but toward thee, goodness if thou continue in his goodness; otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. ²³ And even them, if they do not continue in unbelief, shall be grafted in, for God is powerful enough to graft them in again. ²⁴ For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature and wert grafted contrary to nature into the good olive tree, how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

³³ And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed and expired and was gathered unto his people.

¹¹ ¶ Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly?

⁷ ¶ Remember thou that my life is wind and that my eyes shall not return to see good. ⁸ The eyes of those that see me now shall not see me again; thine eyes shall be upon me, and I will cease to be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he that goes down to Sheol, who shall not come up again; ¹⁰ he shall return no more to his house; neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁸ Why then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the spirit and no eye had seen me!

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.

¹² So man lies down and does not rise; until there is no heaven, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹³ If I wait, Sheol is my house; I have made my bed in the darkness. ¹⁴ I have said to the pit, Thou art my father; to the worms, my mother, and my sister. ¹⁵ And where shall my hope be now? As for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of Sheol, and together they shall rest in the dust.

²⁶ and afterward from this, my stricken skin and from my own flesh, I must see God:

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

⁵⁰ ¶ But Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, gave the spirit.

²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

¹⁰ Then she fell down straightway at his feet and yielded up the spirit; and the young men came in and found her dead and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream, ¹⁶ which was hidden by ice and covered by snow. ¹⁷ Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place; ¹⁸ they turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish.

⁵ And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.

¹⁸ Why was my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar and as waters that fail?

¹³ For now I should have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then I would have been at rest,

²¹ And why dost thou not take away my rebellion and pass over my iniquity? For now I shall sleep in the dust; and if thou shalt seek me in the morning, I shall not be found.

²¹ before I go, to not return, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²⁵ For I know that my redeemer lives and that he shall rise at the latter day over the dust; ²⁶ and afterward from this, my stricken skin and from my own flesh, I must see God: ²⁷ whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another, though my kidneys be consumed within me.

²³ For I know that thou dost conduct me unto death and to the house appointed for all living.

²⁶ They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed:

¹⁹ For that which befalls the sons of men befalls beasts; even one thing befalls them: as the one dies, so dies the other; and they all have one breath; so that a man has no more breath than a beast: for all is vanity. ²⁰ All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all shall turn to dust again. ²¹ Who knows that the spirit of the sons of men goes upward and that the spirit of the beast goes downward to the earth?

⁵ when they shall also be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and appetite shall fail: because man goes to the home of his age, and the mourners shall go about the streets;

⁶ Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and those that dwell therein shall perish in like manner; but my saving health shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall never perish.

¹⁷ ¶ For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

²² For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

² And many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth shall be awakened, some for eternal life, and some for shame and everlasting confusion.

³⁵ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

¹¹ Having said that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. ¹² Then his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall be saved. ¹³ But Jesus had spoken of his death, and they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

²¹ whom it is certainly necessary that the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the age began.

²⁰ For the creatures were subjected to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who has subjected them,

¹⁴ Therefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so those who sleep in Jesus will God also bring with him. ¹⁵ For this, we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede those who are asleep.

⁷ but the heavens, which are now, and the earth are conserved by the same word, kept unto the fire in the day of judgment and of perdition of the ungodly men.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements, burning, shall be dissolved, and the earth and the works that are in it shall be burned up. ¹¹ ¶ Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, ¹² waiting for and desiring earnestly for the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? ¹³ Nevertheless we, according to his promises, wait for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness.

¹¹ ¶ And I saw a great white throne and him that was seated upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and their place was not found.

¹ ¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

¹ ¶ And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark; and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters ceased;

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.

⁴ Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou dost bear unto thy people; O visit me with thy saving health,

¹ ¶ And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will sing unto thee; though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou hast comforted me.

²⁰ ¶ Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself, as it were, for a little moment until the indignation is overpast. ²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against himself: the earth also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.

¹ ¶ The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

³² But of that day and that hour no one knows, no, not even the angels who are in the heaven, neither the Son, but only the Father.

⁴² And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put under his authority only.

³¹ because he has appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; of whom he has given assurance unto all men in that he has raised him from the dead.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.

A Psalm of David. ¶ I waited patiently for the LORD, and he inclined unto me and heard my cry. ² He brought me up also out of the pit of hopelessness, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock and straightened my steps.

²⁵ Teth The LORD is good unto those that wait in him, to the soul that seeks him. ²⁶ Teth It is good to wait quietly in the salvation of the LORD.

¹ ¶ And the hand of the LORD was upon me and took me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the midst of a field which was full of bones, ² and caused me to pass by them round about; and, behold, there were very many upon the face of the field; and they were very dry. ³ And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. ⁴ Then he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones hear the word of the LORD. ⁵ Thus hath the Lord GOD said unto these bones: Behold, I will cause spirit to enter into you, and ye shall live: ⁶ And I will lay nerves upon you and will bring up flesh upon you and cover you with skin and put spirit in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. ⁷ So I prophesied as I was commanded, and as I prophesied, there was a thunder, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. ⁸ And I beheld, and behold nerves upon them and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no spirit in them. ⁹ Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit, Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Come from the four winds, O spirit, and breathe upon these slain, and they shall live. ¹⁰ And I prophesied as he commanded me, and the spirit entered into them, and they lived and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army. ¹¹ Then he said unto me, Son of man, all these bones are the house of Israel; behold, they say, Our bones have dried, and our hope is lost, and in ourselves we are totally cut off. ¹² Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Behold, O my people, I open your graves and will cause you to come up out of your graves and bring you into the land of Israel. ¹³ And ye shall know that I am the LORD when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves ¹⁴ and shall put my Spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall cause you to rest upon your own land; then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it and performed it, said the LORD.

²⁹ Then Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. ³⁰ For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. ³¹ But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which is spoken unto you by God, who saith, ³² I AM the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

²⁸ Marvel not at this, for an hour shall come when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, ²⁹ and those that have done good shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but those that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

⁸ Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you that God should raise the dead?

⁴² So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it shall be raised in incorruption; ⁴³ it is sown in dishonour, it shall be raised with glory; it is sown in weakness, it shall be raised with power; ⁴⁴ it is sown a natural body, it shall be raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

⁵¹ ¶ Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall all indeed be raised, but we shall not all be changed; ⁵² in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised without corruption, and we shall be changed.

²¹ Who shall transform our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is also able to subdue all things unto himself.

¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so those who sleep in Jesus will God also bring with him. ¹⁵ For this, we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not precede those who are asleep. ¹⁶ For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first;

⁷ Be patient, therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently until it receives the early and latter rain. ⁸ Be ye also patient and confirm your hearts, for the coming of the Lord draws near.

¹³ And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and Hades delivered up the dead which were in them; and the judgment of each one was according to their works.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou should oppress, that thou should reject the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁸ ¶ Thine hands have formed me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

²² Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me.

⁴ He shall convocate the heavens of above, and the earth, that he may judge his people. ⁵ Gather my merciful ones together unto me, those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.

⁸ The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; thy mercy, O LORD, endures for ever; forsake not the works of thine own hands.

¹⁷ then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

¹⁹ Therefore, let those that are afflicted according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls unto him as unto a faithful Creator, doing good.

²⁸ ¶ And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

⁶ that thou dost enquire after my iniquity and search after my sin?

¹⁴ ¶ If I sinned, wilt thou mark me and not cleanse me from my iniquity?

⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?

¹¹ he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths.

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul.

¹ To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David. ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me. ² Thou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar. ³ Thou hast girded my walk and my rest, and hast prepared all my ways. ⁴ For the word is not even upon my tongue, and, behold, O LORD, thou dost know it altogether.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

¹⁹ great in counsel and magnificent in works: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men to give unto each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings;

³⁴ Do I not have this laid up in store, sealed up in my treasuries?

¹⁹ God shall lay up his violence for their sons; and he will reward him so that he shall know it.

¹² The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

⁴ O thou that dost tear thy soul in thine anger; shall the earth be forsaken because of thee and shall the rocks be removed out of their place?

²⁵ Of old thou hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the work of thy hands. ²⁶ They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed:

¹² ¶ Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and prepared the heavens with his palm and with three fingers measured the dust of the earth and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills with weights?

¹⁵ Behold, I have placed thee as a threshing instrument, as a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth; thou shalt thresh the mountains and beat them small and shalt make the hills as chaff. ¹⁶ Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; but thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁰ For the mountains shall be removed, and the hills shall tremble; but my mercy shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be changed, said the LORD that has mercy on thee.

¹ ¶ Oh that thou would rend the heavens, that thou would come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and, behold, they trembled, and all the hills were destroyed.

⁵¹ And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

¹⁴ And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

⁸ And the second angel sounded the trumpet, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood;

¹⁷ And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, in which is the spirit of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

²¹ ¶ And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl and of beasts and of animals and of every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth and every man; ²² all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life of all that was in the dry land died. ²³ And every substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man and cattle and the animals and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth, and only Noah remained alive and those that were with him in the ark.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has stolen much, when God takes away his soul?

⁶ ¶ And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. ⁷ LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong; thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.

¹¹ Then he said unto me, Son of man, all these bones are the house of Israel; behold, they say, Our bones have dried, and our hope is lost, and in ourselves we are totally cut off.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and each one rent his mantle and sprinkled dust upon his head toward heaven.

⁸ There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death, and weapons are of no use in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

⁸ Cheth Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets; their skin cleaves to their bones; it is withered; it is dry like a stick.

²⁰ And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not, for thou hast given birth to a son. But she did not answer, neither did she regard it.

⁶ Surely man walks in darkness; surely they are disquieted in vain; they heap up riches not knowing who shall gather them.

¹⁸ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun, which I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool, he who shall have rule over all my labour in which I have laboured and in which I have showed myself wise under the sun? This is also vanity.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die, but the dead do not know any thing; neither do they have any more reward, for their memory is placed into oblivion.

⁷ And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. ⁸ Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, At least there shall be peace and truth in my days.

¹⁶ Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel not acknowledge us; thou, O LORD, art our father; our everlasting Redeemer is thy name.

²⁰ My bones cleave to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

²² Why do ye persecute me as God and are not satisfied with my flesh?

¹⁹ ¶ He is chastened also upon his bed with strong pain in all his bones, ²⁰ so that his life abhors bread and his soul dainty food. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
