¹ ¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said, ² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind? ³ Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable? ⁴ Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God. ⁵ For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee. ⁷ Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills? ⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone? ⁹ What dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us? ¹⁰ Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father. ¹¹ Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee? ¹² Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink, ¹³ that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth? ¹⁴ What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water? ¹⁷ ¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen, ¹⁸ that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it, ¹⁹ unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. ²⁰ The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent. ²¹ Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword. ²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him. ²⁴ Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty, ²⁶ he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields; ²⁷ for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks; ²⁸ and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps. ²⁹ He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth. ³⁰ He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish. ³¹ He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity. ³² He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive. ³⁴ For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

⁷ ¶ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz, the Temanite, My wrath has been kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, as my slave Job has.

⁹ So Eliphaz, the Temanite, and Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

²⁶ Are ye not thinking up words of reproof and throw to the wind words that are lost?

² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

² As you know it, I know it; I am not inferior unto you.

¹ ¶ Ephraim feeds on wind and follows after the east wind; he daily increases lies and desolation because they made a covenant with the Assyrians, and the oil is carried into Egypt.

¹³ ¶ Who is wise and ready among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom.

⁴ That ye are certainly forgers of lies; ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be unto you instead of wisdom.

² Many times I have heard such things; miserable comforters are ye all. ³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what is it that emboldens thee to answer?

¹ ¶ Job answered and said, ² How hast thou helped the one who has no power? Hast thou saved with thy arm the one who has no strength? ³ How hast thou counselled the one that has no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?

¹³ ¶ Your words have prevailed against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken against thee? ¹⁴ Ye have said, It is vain to serve God, and what profit is it that we have kept his law and that we walk mournfully before the LORD of the hosts? ¹⁵ We say, therefore, now, that blessed are the proud and even that those that work wickedness are prospered; those that tempted God have escaped.

³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

⁶ Let your word be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but is driven mad concerning questions and controversy of words, of which comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, ⁵ perverse disputings of men of corrupt understanding, and destitute of the truth, using piety as a source of gain: from such withdraw thyself.

¹³ So Saul died for his rebellion which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he did not keep, and also for consulting a spiritist, to enquire of her ¹⁴ and not enquire of the LORD; therefore, he slew him and turned the kingdom unto David, the son of Jesse.

⁵ But now that it is come upon thee, thou art grieved; it touches thee, and thou art troubled. ⁶ Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the integrity of thy ways?

⁸ I would certainly seek God, and unto God would I commit my affairs;

¹⁴ ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call upon God?

A Psalm of David the slave of the LORD. ¶ The rebellion of the wicked saith to my heart that there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise and to do good.

¹²⁶ ¶ It is time for thee, O LORD, to act; for they have dissipated thy law.

¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart when they howled upon their beds; they congregated themselves for the wheat and the wine, and they rebelled against me.

¹⁰ And their uncle shall take each one and burn them to bring out the bones out of the house and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then he shall say, Hold thy tongue, for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.

⁶ and those that have turned back from following the LORD and those that did not seek the LORD, nor enquired about him.

¹ ¶ And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that it behooves us always to pray and not faint,

³¹ Do we then make void the law through faith? No, in no wise; to the contrary, we establish the law.

²¹ I do not reject the grace of God, for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

¹³ He takes the wise in their own prudence, and the counsel of his adversaries is turned to folly.

²² ¶ One thing remains, that I say, He consumes the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If it is the scourge, it slays suddenly, and it does not laugh at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges; if it is not he who does this then, who is it and where is he?

⁶ ¶ The tents of robbers are at ease, and those that provoke God and those who carry gods in their hands live secure.

¹⁹ Thou didst give thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frames deceit. ²⁰ Thou didst sit and speak against thy brother; thou didst slander thine own mother’s son.

² Thy tongue devises wickedness like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ Thou dost love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ Thou dost love all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

³ Who whet their tongue like a sword and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth for they proceed from evil to evil, and they did not recognize me, said the LORD. ⁴ Take heed each one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. ⁵ And they will deceive each one his neighbour and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

⁸ Their tongue is as a sharp arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth but in heart he lays in wait.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, come forth the evil thoughts, the adulteries, the fornications, the murders, ²² the thefts, the covetousness, the wickedness, the deceit, the lasciviousness, the evil eye, the slander, the pride, the unwiseness:

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil, for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

²⁶ If anyone among you thinks to be religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, his religion is vain.

⁵ In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell. ⁷ For every nature of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of beings in the sea may be tamed and is tamed by mankind, ⁸ but no man can tame the tongue, which is an evil that cannot be restrained and is full of deadly poison.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, he shall prove me perverse.

⁸ ¶ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without rebellion, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this thou art not just; I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right. ⁶ In my judgment he was a liar, my arrow wound is grievous without my having committed a transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he said, It shall profit a man nothing that he should conform his will with God.

² Dost thou think this to be right, when thou didst say, I am more righteous than God? ³ For thou didst say, What advantage will it be unto thee? And, What profit shall I have, if I am cleansed from my sin?

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁸ So they shall make their own council and agreements to fall upon themselves; all that see them shall flee away.

³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

⁶⁵ Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

²² Then he said unto him, Out of thine own mouth I will judge thee, thou wicked slave. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that which I did not lay down, and reaping that which I did not sow;

¹ ¶ And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain and said, I have gained a man by the LORD.

¹² ¶ With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days intelligence.

¹⁰ Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

⁴ ¶ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Cause me to know, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who ordered its dimensions, if thou knowest? Or who has stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Upon what are its foundations founded? Or who laid its corner stone; ⁷ when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness a swaddling band for it, ¹⁰ and established my decree upon it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, Thou shalt come unto here, but no further; and there shall the pride of thy waves be stayed. ¹² ¶ Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? Hast thou shown the dayspring its place, ¹³ that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is transformed as clay to the seal and then stands as a garment; ¹⁵ but the light of the wicked is taken from them, and the high arm is broken. ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked searching out the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? Or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way to the habitation of the light, and where is the place of the darkness? ²⁰ If thou shalt take it in its borders, and if thou should understand the paths to its house? ²¹ If thou didst know when thou wast to be born or if the number of thy days was to be great? ²² Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow, and hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light divided; from where is the east wind scattered upon the earth? ²⁵ ¶ Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters or a way for the lightning of thunder, ²⁶ to cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the desolate and waste ground and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of the dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice, and the hoary frost of heaven, who has begotten it? ³⁰ The waters harden as stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. ³¹ Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou bring forth the signs of the heavens in their season, or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? ³³ Dost thou know the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou use its power in the earth? ³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are? ³⁶ Who put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who gave intelligence to understanding? ³⁷ Who declared the heavens in wisdom? Or who can stay the bottles of heaven ³⁸ when the dust hardens and the clods cleave fast together? ³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion or fill the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ when they crouch in their dens and abide in their lairs to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provided food for the raven; when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of food?

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

²² ¶ The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. ²³ I was set up with eternal dominion, from the beginning, before the earth was. ²⁴ I was begotten before the depths, before the existence of the fountains of many waters. ²⁵ Before the mountains were founded, before the hills was I begotten.

²⁹ The hidden things of the LORD our God are uncovered unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁶ and that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom! For thou dost deserve double according to sound wisdom; and thou dost know that God has forgotten thee because of thine iniquity.

² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

⁵ O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be unto you instead of wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my dispute, and hearken to the arguments of my lips.

⁴ as I was in the days of my youth, when God was familiar in my tent;

¹⁴ Nun The secret of the LORD is for those that fear him, and he will show them his covenant.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD; but his secret is with the righteous.

¹⁸ For who has stood in the secret of the LORD and has seen and heard his word? Who has payed attention to his word and heard it?

⁷ Because the Lord GOD will do nothing unless he reveals his secret to his slaves the prophets.

²⁵ ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I praise thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and understanding and hast revealed them unto children.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given.

³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

¹⁵ From now on I do not call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his lord does; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

³⁴ For who has understood the intent of the Lord? or who has been his counsellor?

²⁵ ¶ Now to him that is able to confirm you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was concealed from times eternal ²⁶ but now is made manifest, and by the writings of the prophets, by the commandment of God eternal, declared unto all the Gentiles, that they might hear and obey by faith,

⁹ But as it is written, That which eye has not seen nor ear heard neither has entered into the heart of man is that which God has prepared for those that love him. ¹⁰ But God has revealed this unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? Even so no one has known the things of God, but the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ For who has known the understanding of the Lord? Who has instructed him? But we have the understanding of Christ.

³ But I have a heart as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who shall not be able to say as much again?

³ How hast thou counselled the one that has no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is? ⁴ To whom hast thou uttered words, and whose is the spirit that comes forth from thee?

⁷ ¶ Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If anyone trusts to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s.

⁵ ¶ I reckon that I have not been inferior in any way to those grandiose apostles.

²¹ I speak as concerning the reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit in that in which another is bold, (I speak foolishly), I am bold also. ²² ¶ Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. ²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more, in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times I received forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned; three times I suffered shipwreck, night and day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by those of my nation, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in labour and travail, in many watches, in hunger and thirst, in many fasts, in cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Beside those things that are without, my daily combat is the welfare of all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}. ²⁹ Who is sick, and I am not sick? who stumbles, and I burn not? ³⁰ If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern my weakness.

⁷ ¶ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee;

⁸ ¶ Ask, I pray thee, of the former age, and be willing to enquire of thy fathers regarding them; ⁹ for we are but of yesterday and know nothing because our days upon earth are as a shadow. ¹⁰ Shall they not teach thee and tell thee and utter these words out of their heart?

²⁰ He impedes the lips of those that speak the truth and takes away the counsel of the aged.

⁶ ¶ And Elihu, the son of Barachel, the Buzite, answered and said, I am younger, and ye are older; therefore, I was afraid, and I feared to declare unto you my opinion. ⁷ I said, Days shall speak, and the multitude of years shall declare wisdom.

³¹ ¶ Old age is a crown of glory if it is found in the way of righteousness.

²⁴ Then Zedekiah, the son of Chenaanah, went near and smote Micaiah on the cheek and said, Which way did the Spirit of the LORD go from me to speak unto thee?

⁸ I would certainly seek God, and unto God would I commit my affairs; ⁹ who does great things that no one can understand, and marvels that have no explanation; ¹⁰ who gives rain upon the earth and sends waters abroad; ¹¹ who sets up the humble on high, that those who mourn may be lifted up with saving health. ¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own prudence, and the counsel of his adversaries is turned to folly. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope in the noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from the mouth of the wicked, and from the hand of the violent. ¹⁶ Who is the hope of the poor, and iniquity closes her mouth. ¹⁷ ¶ Behold, blessed is the man whom God chastens; therefore, do not despise not the correction of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he makes sore, and binds up; he wounds, and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ He shall deliver thee in six tribulations, and in the seventh no evil shall touch thee. ²⁰ In famine he shall ransom thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it comes. ²² At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth; ²³ for thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. ²⁴ And thou shalt know that there is peace in thy tent, and thou shalt visit thy habitation and shalt not sin. ²⁵ Thou shalt know that thy seed is great and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of wheat that is gathered in its season.

¹³ ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him; ¹⁴ if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations, ¹⁵ then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; thou shalt be strongly established and shalt not fear; ¹⁶ and thou shalt forget thy misery and remember it as waters that passed away; ¹⁷ and thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. ¹⁸ And thou shalt trust because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig and sleep in safety; ¹⁹ thou shalt lie down, and no one shall make thee afraid; and many shall make requests unto thee.

⁸ Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

¹⁶ Likewise, he would have removed thee out of the mouth of anguish into a broad place where there is no distress and should have set thy table full of fatness.

³ ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; ⁴ who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. ⁵ For in the same manner that the sufferings of the Christ abound in us, so also our consolation abounds by Christ.

⁶ Nevertheless God, who comforts the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

¹³ ¶ If thou would prepare thine heart and stretch out thine hands toward him;

² Now there are only mockers with me, upon whose bitterness my eye continues to gaze.

¹⁹ Let not those that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those that hate me wink with the eye without a cause.

¹³ He winks with his eyes, he speaks with his feet, he teaches with his fingers;

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to defraud of the price of the land? ⁴ Retaining it, was it not thy own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

²² Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God, if perhaps this thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

¹⁴ But each one is tempted, when they are drawn away of their own lust and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has hardened himself against him and remained in peace?

³ Is it good unto thee that thou should oppress, that thou should reject the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

²⁵ Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty, ²⁶ he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields; ²⁷ for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

¹³ Mem Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

¹³ ¶ Your words have prevailed against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken against thee?

⁷ because the prudence of the flesh is enmity against God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, neither indeed can it. ⁸ So then, those that are carnal cannot please God.

² For we all offend in many things. If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to govern the whole body with restraint. ³ Behold, we put bits (or restraint) in the horses’ mouths to persuade them, and we govern their whole body. ⁴ Behold also the ships, which though they are so great are driven of fierce winds, yet they are governed with a very small rudder, wherever the governor desires. ⁵ In the same manner, the tongue is a very small member and boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

⁴⁶ If they have sinned against thee (for there is no man that does not sin) and thou should be angry with them and deliver them to the enemy so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near,

³⁶ If they sin against thee (for there is no man who does not sin,)and thou art angry with them and deliver them over before their enemies so that those that take them carry them away captives unto an enemy land far off or near,

² I know it is so of a truth, but how shall a man be justified with God?

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one.

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? Or how can he that is born of a woman be clean? ⁵ Behold, even the moon shall not shine, neither are the stars pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, who is as a worm, and the son of man, who is also a worm?

³ They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is no one that does good, no, not one.

⁵ Behold, the pain of my iniquity has caused me to writhe; my mother conceived me so that sin might be removed from me.

⁹ ¶ Who shall be able to say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

²⁰ For surely there is not a just man upon earth that in doing good does not sin.

²⁹ Behold, this only have I found: that God has made man upright, but they have sought out many perversions.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

¹⁸ And I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing; for I have the desire, but I am not able to perform that which is good.

²² But the scripture has concluded all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to the believers.

² in which in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the will of the prince of the power of this air, the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience, ³ among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature the children of wrath, even as all the others.

⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

¹⁹ How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who shall be crushed by the moth!

¹² If wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue,

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up the scorn like water?

⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is no one that does good. ² The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any that did understand and seek God. ³ They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is no one that does good, no, not one.

³ Every one of them is gone back; they are altogether become filthy; there is no one that does good, no, not one.

²⁸ ¶ A witness of Belial shall scorn judgment, and the mouth of the wicked shall cover iniquity.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a perverse understanding, to do those things which are not convenient, ²⁹ being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, ³⁰ backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁹ What then? Are we better than they? No, in no wise; for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin; ¹⁰ as it is written, There is no one righteous, no, not one; ¹¹ there is no one that understands; there is no one that seeks after God. ¹² They are all gone out of the way; they are together become unprofitable; there is no one that does good, no, not one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips, ¹⁴ whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; ¹⁵ their feet are swift to shed blood; ¹⁶ destruction and misery are in their ways, ¹⁷ and the way of peace they have not known; ¹⁸ there is no fear of God before their eyes. ¹⁹ ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

³ For we ourselves also were foolish in another time, rebellious, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

²⁷ Behold that which we have searched out, so it is; hear it and judge it for thyself.

¹ ¶ Therefore, Job, hear now my reasons, and hearken to all my words.

² Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

² Wait for me a little, and I will teach thee; for I yet speak on God’s behalf.

⁸ ¶ Ask, I pray thee, of the former age, and be willing to enquire of thy fathers regarding them;

¹⁸ Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not until I have showed the strength of thy arm unto the next generation and thy power to every one that is to come,

³ which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their sons, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their sons: ⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the sons which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their sons

¹⁹ He who lives, he who lives, even he shall confess thee, as I do this day; the father to the sons shall make known thy truth.

²⁵ And unto Eber were born two sons; the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their descendants, in their nations; and by these were the Gentiles divided in the earth after the flood.

⁸ when the most High caused the Gentiles to be inherited, when he separated the sons of men, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

¹⁷ So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God, that I inhabit Zion, the mountain of my holiness: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and no strangers shall pass through her any more.

¹ ¶ Why, seeing that times are not hidden from the Almighty, do those that know him not see his days?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

³ Thou dost turn unto man until he is broken and thou saith, Become converted, ye sons of Adam. ⁴ For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past and as a watch in the night.

¹² ¶ Cause us to learn this that we might number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all; and also that the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up? ²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself and is not rich in God.

²² For we now know that all the creatures groan together and travail in pain together until now.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts. ⁵ Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; ye have refreshed your hearts, as in the day of slaughter of sacrifices. ⁶ Ye have condemned and murdered the just, and he does not resist you.

⁹ ¶ And the LORD God called unto the man and said unto him, Where art thou? ¹⁰ And he replied, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.

³⁶ And upon those that are left alive of you I will send such cowardice into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, that the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursue.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, and he died.

⁶ For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host; and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.

¹³ ¶ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁴ and a messenger came unto Job and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, another came who said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there another came and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹¹ ¶ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and his own feet shall drive him away.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds, ⁷ yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him shall say, What is become of him?

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food. ²⁴ He shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him.

²⁰ Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

⁷ ¶ The wicked spring forth as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity blossom, so that they shall be destroyed for ever:

²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes upon you; ²⁷ when what you have feared comes as destruction, and your calamity comes as a whirlwind; when tribulation and anguish come upon you.

²¹ And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne and made an oration unto them. ²² And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of god, and not of man. ²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he did not give God the glory, and he expired eaten of worms.

¹⁰ Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured and perished by the destroyer.

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

¹¹ And they had a king over them, who is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon meaning destroyer.

³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; for what should I wait for the LORD any longer?

¹¹ What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life?

¹⁶ Who if I were to invoke him, and he answered me; yet I would not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword; for the wrath of the sword comes because of the iniquities, that ye may know there is a judgment.

¹⁴ If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

²¹ Then they shall pass through this land, fatigued and hungry, and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves and curse their king and their God. And raising their face high, ²² they shall look upon the earth and behold tribulation and gross darkness, darkness and anguish; and they shall be submerged in gross darkness.

⁵ And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself.

¹² when thou tillest the ground, from now on it shall not yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹² His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world.

³ For want and famine they walked alone; fleeing into solitude, to the dark place, desolate and waste. ⁴ Who cut up mallows among the bushes and juniper roots for their food.

¹⁵ Let them wander up and down for food and murmur if they are not satisfied.

¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds and beg; let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

⁸ but if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all; yet if afterwards he remembers the days of darkness, for they shall be many, he shall say that everything that shall have happened to him is vanity.

⁶ We have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to be satisfied with bread.

⁹ We got our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

² a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of shadow that spreads itself upon the mountains as the dawn: a people great and strong; there has not ever been the like, neither shall there be any more after him, even to the years of many generations.

²⁰ Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

²⁷ but a certain fearful hope of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁷ they were stoned; they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword; they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; poor, afflicted, mistreated, ³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy); they wandered in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.

² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances! ³ For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

⁹ Tribulation and anguish shall be upon every human soul that does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek;

² And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. ³ ¶ And they said, The God of the Hebrews has found us; therefore we shall go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he encounter us with pestilence or with the sword.

¹⁷ Thou even so dost exalt thyself against my people that thou wilt not let them go.

²³ And if ye will not be corrected by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me,

⁷ And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God has come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! For yesterday and day before yesterday it was not so. ⁸ Woe unto us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. ⁹ Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye not serve the Hebrews as they have served you; quit yourselves like men and fight.

⁶ Why then do ye harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had dealt thus among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

⁹ then he shall show them their work and that their rebellions prevailed.

⁹ Hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath; and behold every one that is proud and bring him down.

⁷ Behold, this is the man that did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

⁹ They set their mouth against heaven, and their tongue walks through the earth.

¹¹ And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

⁹ ¶ Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries, prepare yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.

¹² Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will come upon the fruit of the pride of the heart of the king of Assyria, and upon the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples: and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have taken control over all the earth; and there was no one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

⁴ Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would tread them down, I would burn them together.

⁴ Who has wrought and done it? Who calls the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and I, myself am with those who are last. ⁵ The isles saw it and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid; they congregated and came. ⁶ Each one helped his neighbour; and each one said to his brother, Be of good courage. ⁷ So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smooths with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, It is well joined and he strengthened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I AM Jesus whom thou dost persecute; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

⁸ ¶ Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee.

²² Furthermore, king Ahaz in the time of his distress trespassed even more against the LORD,

¹³ Have ye not known what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? Could peradventure the gods of the Gentiles of those lands deliver their lands out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who was there among all the gods of those Gentiles that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of my hands? Why should your God be able to deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁵ Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you nor persuade you in this matter neither believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hands and out of the hands of my fathers; how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁶ And his slaves spoke yet more against the LORD God and against his slave Hezekiah. ¹⁷ In addition to this, he wrote letters that blasphemed the LORD God of Israel and spoke against him, saying, As the gods of the Gentiles of other lands could not deliver their people out of my hand, neither shall the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

¹² I was prosperous, but he has broken me asunder; he has taken me by my neck and shaken me to pieces and set me up for his mark.

⁴⁰ Thou hast also given me the necks of my enemies that I might destroy those that hate me.

¹⁵ ¶ But Jeshurun (the upright one) waxed fat and kicked; (thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou hast covered thyself) and forsook the God who made him and lightly esteemed the strong One of his saving health.

¹⁰ ¶ But return all of you, and come now; for I shall not find one that is wise among you.

¹⁰ They are closed in with their own fat; with their mouth they speak proudly.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart.

³¹ the wrath of God came upon them and slew the fattest of them and smote down the chosen of Israel.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat and make their ears heavy and blind their eyes that they not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their heart, nor convert and there be healing for him.

²⁸ They are become fat; they shine; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they did not judge the cause, the cause of the fatherless; with all this they made themselves prosperous; and they did not judge the cause of the poor.

¹⁴ with the kings and the counsellors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves;

¹⁵ He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

⁸ ¶ Woe unto those that join house to house, that lay field to field, until they have done away with the borders! Will ye dwell alone in the midst of the earth? ⁹ In my ears, the LORD of the hosts said, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.

¹¹ And I will make Jerusalem heaps and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

¹⁸ Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the temple mount as the high places of a forest.

³⁷ And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and a hissing, without an inhabitant.

¹² Therefore for your sake Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto thee that pardons iniquity, and passes over the rebellion with the remnant of his heritage? He did not retain his anger for ever because he delights in mercy.

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food. ²⁴ He shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath.

¹⁵ ¶ Dost thou desire to keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood. ¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us; and what can the Almighty do unto us? ¹⁸ He had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous shall see it and be glad; and the innocent laughs them to scorn. ²⁰ Whereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.

² And he called him and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship, for thou may no longer be steward.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried;

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the spirit of his anger they are consumed.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope in the noonday as in the night.

²¹ before I go, to not return, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²² He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent.

²⁰ Whereas our substance was not cut down, when the fire had consumed the rest of them.

⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the spirit of his lips he shall slay the wicked.

³³ For Tophet is ordained of yesterday for the king of Babylon, it is also prepared; he has deepened and enlarged the pile of her fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD like a stream of brimstone kindles it.

⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work; how much less afterward shall it be meet for any work when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned? ⁶ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: As the vine tree among the trees of the forest which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I have given over the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them; they came out of one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD when I set my face against them.

⁴⁷ and thou shalt say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD. Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Behold, I kindle a fire in thee, which shall devour every green tree in thee and every dry tree; the flame of the fire shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein. ⁴⁸ And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.

¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹³ Then the king said to the slaves, Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him into the darkness outside; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁴¹ Then he shall also say unto those who shall be on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels;

⁴³ And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁴ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁶ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell, ⁴⁸ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

⁸ with flaming fire, to take vengeance on those that do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁹ who shall be punished with eternal destruction by the presence of the Lord and by the glory of his power,

¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are brought by a whirlwind, to whom gross darkness is reserved for ever.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

¹⁵ And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the Gentiles; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

⁸ Even as I have seen, those that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same.

¹⁶ With him is strength and existence; he who errs and he who leads astray are his.

¹⁰ Trust not in violence and become not vain in the taking of spoil; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

⁸ ¶ He that sows iniquity shall reap iniquity, and the rod of his anger shall fail.

¹⁰ Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy saving health and hast not been mindful of the Rock of thy strength; therefore thou shalt plant pleasant plants and set it with strange slips: ¹¹ In the day that thou shalt plant them, thou shalt make them to grow and shalt make thy seed to flourish early; but in the day of gathering, the harvest shall flee and shall be desperate sorrow.

²⁰ The ashes feed him; his deceived heart inclines him, that he not deliver his soul and say, Is not the lie at my right hand?

⁴ No one calls for righteousness, nor do any judge by the truth; they trust in vanity, and speak vanities; they conceive trouble and bring forth iniquity.

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind; they shall have no harvest; the fruit shall yield no meal: if so be it yields, the strangers shall swallow it up.

⁸ Those that observe lying vanities forsake his mercy.

³ For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

⁷ Do not deceive yourselves; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that sows in the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

⁶ Let no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

¹⁶ Like a tree, he is green before the sun, and his branches go forth over his garden; ¹⁷ his roots weave themselves around a spring and secure themselves even in a stony place. ¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. ¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth from where he was transplanted, others shall grow.

⁷ ¶ For there is yet hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender branch will not cease. ⁸ Though its root waxes old in the earth and its trunk is dead in the ground, ⁹ at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a new plant.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets.

¹⁶ Who were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood.

⁵ God shall likewise cast thee down for ever; he shall cut thee off and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. ⁶ ¶ The righteous also shall see and fear and shall laugh at him, saying: ⁷ Behold, this is the man that did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness. ⁸ But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the eternal mercy of God for ever.

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of the grave; bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in thee.

¹⁷ Do not be hasty to condemn, neither be thou foolish: why should thou die in the midst of thy labours?

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: women shall come and set them on fire: for this is not a people of understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favour.

⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters that it might bring forth branches and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine. ⁹ Say thou: Thus hath the Lord GOD said, Shall it be prospered? Shall he not pull it up its roots and destroy its fruit and let it wither? All of the leaves of her spring shall wither, even without great power or many people plucking it up by its roots. ¹⁰ Yea, behold, being planted, shall it be prospered? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It shall wither in the furrows where it grew.

¹⁶ Ephraim was smitten, their root is dried up; they shall bear no more fruit; even though they bring forth, yet I will slay even the desirable fruit of their womb.

⁵ I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall flourish as the lily and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ His branches shall spread, and his glory shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. ⁷ Those that shall sit under his shadow shall return; they shall be given life as the wheat, and they shall flourish as the vine; the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

⁶ He who does not abide in me shall be cast forth as an unsound branch and shall wither, and they are gathered and cast into the fire and are burned.

³⁹ Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worms shall eat them. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt have olive trees throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olive shall fall.

⁹ The earth mourns and languishes: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel were shaken.

¹³ and the stars of heaven fell upon the earth, even as a fig tree casts her figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

³ And his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after greed, receiving bribes and perverting that which is right.

³ Behold, here I am; witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. If I have taken anyone’s ox or if I have taken anyone’s ass or if I have defrauded anyone or if I have oppressed anyone or if I have received a bribe {Heb. ransom} from anyone to blind my eyes, I will restore it you.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish.

²² Those that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

¹⁴ if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations,

¹ ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

⁵ ¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end. ⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has stolen much, when God takes away his soul?

¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked and caused their teeth to release the prey.

¹³ But the hypocrites in heart shall irritate him more; they shall not cry out when he binds them.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with eternal flames? ¹⁵ He that walks in righteousness, he that speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of violence, he that shakes his hands from receiving bribes; he that stops his ears to not hear of blood; he who shuts his eyes to not see evil;

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat, ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them. ¹² For I have known of your many rebellions and your great sins that afflict the just and take a ransom and turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

² The merciful man of the earth is missing: and there is no one upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt each man his brother with a net.

⁵¹ and shall cut him off and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹⁴ Behold, he travails with iniquity and has conceived of his own work and brought forth falsehood.

⁴ No one calls for righteousness, nor do any judge by the truth; they trust in vanity, and speak vanities; they conceive trouble and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch cockatrice’ eggs and weave the spider’s web; whosoever shall eat of their eggs shall die, and if they should squeeze them, a viper shall come out.

¹³ Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye shall eat the fruit of lies because thou didst trust in thy way and in the multitude of thy mighty men.

¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.
