¹ ¶ And when Rachel saw that she gave Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister and said unto Jacob, Give me sons, or else I will die.

³¹ ¶ And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

¹⁶ ¶ And they journeyed from Bethel, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath when Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. ¹⁷ And it came to pass when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also. ¹⁸ And it came to pass as her soul was departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin. ¹⁹ Thus Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

¹¹ And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the word.

¹⁵ And if thou must deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found grace in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

²⁹ And Moses said unto him, Art thou jealous for my sake? It would be good that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

⁴ And when the day would come, Elkanah would sacrifice, and he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters. ⁵ But unto Hannah he would give a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah, even though the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁶ And her rival provoked her to anger and sorrow because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And this would happen year by year when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she would provoke her; therefore, she would weep and not eat. ⁸ Then Elkanah, her husband, said to her, Hannah, why dost thou weep? And why dost thou not eat? And why is thy heart grieved? Am I not better to thee than ten sons?

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and desiring to die, he said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers.

¹ ¶ After this Job opened his mouth and cursed his day. ² And Job spoke and said, ³ Let the day perish in which I was born and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

¹¹ ¶ Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly?

²⁰ ¶ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ who long for death, but it comes not; and search for it more than for hid treasures; ²² who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they can find the grave;

² It is certain that wrath kills the foolish man, and envy consumes the covetous one.

¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For now, if I remain silent, I shall die.

¹⁶ Then they envied Moses in the camp and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

³⁰ ¶ A sound heart is life to the flesh, but envy is rottenness of the bones.

⁴ ¶ Again, I considered all travail and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁴ ¶ Cursed be the day in which I was born; do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew and did not repent; and let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noontide ¹⁷ because he did not slay me in the womb, and my mother would have been my grave, and her womb perpetual conception. ¹⁸ Why did I come forth out of the womb? To see labour and sorrow that my days should be consumed with shame?

³ he left Judaea and departed again into Galilee.

⁸ (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy food.)

³ For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying and strife and divisions, are ye not carnal and walk as men?

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, of which there is no need to repented; but the sorrow of the world works death.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ For we ourselves also were foolish in another time, rebellious, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not and do not be liars against the truth.

⁵ Do ye think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?
