¹ ¶ Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where the synagogue of the Jews was. ² And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, ³ declaring openly and proposing that it behooved the Christ to have suffered and risen again from the dead and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is the Christ. ⁴ And some of them believed and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the noble women not a few. ⁵ But the disobedient Jews, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort and gathered a company and set all the city on an uproar and assaulted the house of Jason and sought to bring them out to the people. ⁶ And when they did not find them, they brought Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down have come here also, ⁷ whom Jason has received, and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. ⁸ And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. ⁹ And when they had taken security of Jason and of the others, they let them go. ¹⁰ ¶ And the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night unto Berea, who when they got there went into the synagogue of the Jews. ¹¹ These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all diligence and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. ¹² Therefore many of them believed, also of honourable women who were Greeks and of men, not a few. ¹³ But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the people. ¹⁴ And then immediately the brethren sent Paul to go away towards the sea, but Silas and Timothy abode there still. ¹⁵ And those that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens; and receiving an order from him unto Silas and Timothy to come unto him as soon as possible, they departed. ¹⁶ ¶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city completely given over to idolatry. ¹⁷ Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews and with the devout persons and in the market daily with those that he met with. ¹⁸ Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? others, He seems to be a setter forth of new gods, because he preached unto them Jesus and the resurrection. ¹⁹ And they took him and brought him unto the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which thou speakest? ²⁰ For thou bringest certain new things to our ears; we desire, therefore, to know what these things mean. ²¹ (For all the Athenians and strangers who were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.) ²² ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, {Mars’ Hill}, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. ²³ For as I passed by and beheld your sanctuaries, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him I declare unto you. ²⁴ The God that made the world and all the things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; ²⁵ neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he gives to all life and breath and all things ²⁶ and has made of one blood all the lineage of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and has determined the seasons (which he has limited) and the bounds of their habitation; ²⁷ that they should seek the Lord, if in any manner they might reach out to touch him and find him though he is not far from each one of us; ²⁸ for in him we live and move and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also of his lineage. ²⁹ Being therefore of the lineage of God, we ought not to think that which is Divine is like unto gold or silver or stone, bearing the mark of art and man’s imagination. ³⁰ For the times of this ignorance God overlooked, but he now commands all men everywhere to repent ³¹ because he has appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; of whom he has given assurance unto all men in that he has raised him from the dead. ³² ¶ And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. ³³ So Paul departed from among them. ³⁴ But certain men believed and joined themselves with him, among whom was Dionysius of the Areopagus and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

⁴ Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath nor that is in the water under the earth.

⁶ ¶ Then, behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the testimony. ⁷ And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; ⁸ and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. So the plague of the sons of Israel was stayed. ⁹ And those that died in that plague were twenty-four thousand. ¹⁰ Then the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, ¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the sons of Israel, being zealous for my sake among them, therefore I did not consume the sons of Israel in my jealousy.

¹⁶ Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

⁷ For what nation is there so great who has God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

¹⁴ Behold, the heavens and the heaven of heavens are of the LORD thy God, the earth also, with all that is therein.

⁷ ¶ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee; ⁸ when the most High caused the Gentiles to be inherited, when he separated the sons of men, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel.

²⁹ Yet a man is risen to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God, and he shall hurl forth the souls of thine enemies as out of the middle of a sling.

²⁷ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heavens, the heavens of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have built?

⁹ For if ye return unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find mercy before those that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land, for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you if ye return unto him. ¹⁰ So the posts passed from city to city through the land of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun, but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them. ¹¹ Nevertheless, some men of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and misused his prophets until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

¹² Be it known unto the king that the Jews who came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have founded the walls thereof and joined the foundations. ¹³ Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city is rebuilt, and the walls founded, they will not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so the revenue of the kings shall be reduced. ¹⁴ Now because we are salted with the salt of the palace, and it is not just unto us to see the king’s dishonour; therefore, we have sent to make this known unto the king, ¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of our fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that from old time they form rebellions in the midst of her, for which cause this city was destroyed.

¹⁰ In his hand is the soul of every living thing and the spirit of all flesh of man.

²³ He multiplies the Gentiles and destroys them; he scatters the Gentiles and gathers them again.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.

² Can a man be profitable unto God? For he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

¹² Neither have I separated myself from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

³ that all the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,

² Then the wrath of Elihu, the son of Barachel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, was kindled; against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God. ³ Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

¹⁸ For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me. ¹⁹ Behold, my belly is as wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst forth like spirits. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may be able to breathe; I will open my lips and answer.

⁴ The Spirit of God made me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life.

¹⁴ If he were to set his heart upon man and gather unto himself his spirit and his breath,

⁶ If thou dost sin, what hast thou done against him? Or if thy rebellion is multiplied, what doest thou unto him? ⁷ If thou art righteous, what shalt thou give him? Or what shall he receive of thine hand?

² But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law he meditates day and night. ³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

⁸ And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall judge the peoples in uprightness.

² I said unto the LORD, Thou art my goodness: I have no goodness apart from thee;

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows the work of his hands. ² One day provides a word for the next day, and one night declares wisdom unto the next night. ³ There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. ⁴ Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tabernacle for the sun, ⁵ which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber and rejoices as a strong man to run a race. ⁶ His going forth is from the end of the heavens, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

⁹⁷ ¶ MEM. O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

¹ To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David. ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me. ² Thou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar. ³ Thou hast girded my walk and my rest, and hast prepared all my ways. ⁴ For the word is not even upon my tongue, and, behold, O LORD, thou dost know it altogether. ⁵ Thou hast formed my face and my insides and laid thine hand upon me. ⁶ Thy knowledge is wonderful beyond my ability to comprehend; it is high, I cannot understand it. ⁷ ¶ Where shall I go from thy spirit? or where shall I flee from thy presence? ⁸ If I ascend to the heavens, thou art there: if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there. ⁹ If I take the wings of the dawn and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, ¹⁰ even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. ¹¹ If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall shine because of me. ¹² Even the darkness does not hide from thee; but the night shines as the day; the darkness is as the light. ¹³ For thou hast possessed my kidneys: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

⁵ ¶ Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God;

⁵ If the wise will hear them, doctrine shall increase, and the man of understanding shall acquire wise counsel:

²⁰ ¶ Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets: ²¹ She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words, saying, ²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and the fools hate knowledge?

¹ ¶ My son, if thou wilt receive my words and hide my commandments within thee ² so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom and apply thine heart to intelligence, ³ yea, if thou criest for understanding and givest thy voice unto intelligence, ⁴ if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hid treasures, ⁵ then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

¹ ¶ Doth not wisdom cry, and give her voice to intelligence? ² She stands in the top of high places, by the way at the crossroads of the paths. ³ She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of men.

¹⁰ Receive my chastening and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold.

³⁴ Blessed is the man that hears me, keeping vigil at my gates, waiting at the threshold of my doors.

⁶ Forsake that which is foolish and live and go in the way of understanding.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

²⁰ ¶ He that walks with wise men shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.

³⁰ ¶ A sound heart is life to the flesh, but envy is rottenness of the bones.

¹⁸ ¶ A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeases strife.

⁹ ¶ Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the prudence of thy words.

¹² ¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

²⁵ ¶ He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife, but he that puts his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

⁷ ¶ Tell me, O thou whom my soul loves, where thou dost feed, where thou dost make thy flock to rest at noon; for why did I have to be as a wanderer after the flocks of thy companions? ⁸ If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go forth, following the footprints of the flock and feed thy little female goats beside the booths of the shepherds.

¹ ¶ Where has thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? where didst thy beloved separate himself? that we may seek him with thee.

¹⁸ Then come, shall the LORD say, and we shall be even; if your sins were as scarlet, they shall be made as white as snow; if they were red like crimson, they shall become as wool.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

³¹ Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Philistia, art dissolved; for there shall come from the north a smoke, and not one shall be left in thy assemblies.

¹¹ LORD, when thy hand is withdrawn, they will not see: but they shall see in the end and be ashamed with the zeal of the people. And fire shall consume thine enemies.

¹⁶ Seek ye out that which is written in the book of the LORD and read; if one of these is lacking, none is missing with his mate, for his mouth has commanded it, and his same Spirit has gathered them.

²⁵ To whom then will ye liken me, or what shall ye compare me to? saith the Holy One.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the God of the age is the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth? He does not faint, nor is he weary; and there is no one that can attain to his intelligence.

⁵ ¶ Thus saith God the LORD, the Creator of the heavens and he that stretches them out; he that spreads forth the earth and that which comes out of it; he that gives breath unto the people upon it and spirit to those that walk therein:

⁹ ¶ Those that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and that which is most precious to them is useful for nothing; and they are their own witnesses that they do not see, nor understand; therefore, they shall be ashamed. ¹⁰ Who has formed God? And who cast a graven image that is profitable for nothing? ¹¹ Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed; for the workmen, they are of men; even if all of them are gathered together and stand, they shall fear and shall be ashamed together. ¹² The smith shall take the tongs; he shall work among the coals; he shall give it form with the hammers and bring forth in it the arm of his strength; though he is hungry and his strength fails: he shall not drink water, even if he faints. ¹³ The carpenter stretches out his rule; he measures it with a line; he fits it with planes; he marks it out with the compass; he makes it after the form of a noble man, in the likeness of the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house. ¹⁴ He shall hew down cedars and take the cypress and the oak, and he shall strengthen himself with the trees of the forest; he shall plant a fir tree, which shall be nourished with the rain. ¹⁵ The man shall then use of it for firewood; for he will take thereof and warm himself; he will kindle it and bake bread; he will also make a god and worship it; he will fabricate an idol and shall kneel down before it. ¹⁶ He shall burn part of it in the fire; with another part thereof he shall eat flesh; he shall roast meat and shall satisfy himself. Afterwards he shall warm himself and say, Aha, I have warmed myself, I have seen fire; ¹⁷ the residue of it he turns into god, into his graven image; he humbles himself before it and worships it and prays unto it and says, Deliver me; for thou art my god. ¹⁸ They did not know nor understand; for he has anointed their eyes that they not see and their hearts that they not understand. ¹⁹ He does not return to his right mind; he does not have knowledge nor intelligence to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; I have also baked bread upon the coals of it; I have roasted flesh and eaten it and shall I make the residue of it an abomination? Do I have to humble myself before the trunk of a tree? ²⁰ The ashes feed him; his deceived heart inclines him, that he not deliver his soul and say, Is not the lie at my right hand?

¹⁸ For thus has the LORD said that creates the heavens; God himself that forms the earth, he who made it and established it. He did not create it in vain; he created it to be inhabited; I am the LORD; and there is no one else.

²¹ Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together; who caused this to be heard from the beginning and has declared it from that time, except me, the LORD? and there is no God beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is no one besides me.

⁵ ¶ To whom will ye liken me and make me equal and compare me that we may be alike? ⁶ They lavish gold out of the bag and weigh silver in the balance and hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god; they fall down and worship.

¹⁰ For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and does not return there, but waters the earth and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater: ¹¹ So shall my Word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall be prospered in that for which I sent it.

The stock is a doctrine of vanities. ⁹ Silver spread into plates shall be brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, shall the workman work and the hands of the founder: they shall dress them in blue and purple: they are all the work of cunning men. ¹⁰ But the LORD God is the Truth, he himself is Living God and Everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembles, and the Gentiles shall not be able to abide his indignation. ¹¹ Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens or the earth, even they shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.

⁹ And I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But he was in my heart as a burning fire and within my bones; I tried to forbear, and I could not.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

¹³ Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the sons of the captivity of the Jews, has not regarded thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast confirmed, but makes his petition three times a day.

²⁷ And the heart of both these kings shall be to do evil, and at the same table they shall speak lies; but it shall not prosper, for the time appointed is not yet come.

³⁵ And some of the wise shall fall to be purged and cleaned and made white, even to the time of the end because even for this there is time appointed.

⁸ ¶ But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his rebellion, and to Israel his sin.

¹⁹ Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise! Can it ever teach? Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all within it. ²⁰ But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

¹ ¶ The burden of the word of the LORD upon Israel, said the LORD, who stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him.

³ When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him.

¹³ Therefore go ye and learn what this is, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, for I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

¹⁵ Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of those of Sodom and those of Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

²⁵ ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I praise thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and understanding and hast revealed them unto children.

⁹ But in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.

¹⁶ So the first shall be last, and the last first; for many are called, but few are chosen.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

¹⁴ And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come.

³¹ ¶ When the Son of man shall come in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he shall sit upon the throne of his glory, ³² and before him shall be gathered all nations; and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats, ³³ and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. ³⁴ Then shall the King say unto those on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; ³⁵ for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; ³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. ³⁷ Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee? or thirsty and give thee drink? ³⁸ When did we see thee a stranger and take thee in? or naked and clothe thee? ³⁹ Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and come unto thee? ⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me. ⁴¹ Then he shall also say unto those who shall be on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels; ⁴² for I was hungry, and ye gave me no food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then they shall also answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then he shall answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of my brothers, ye did it not to me. ⁴⁶ And they shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

¹⁸ For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

¹⁴ ¶ And as he came to the disciples, he saw a great multitude about them and scribes that disputed with them.

²¹ In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent and hast revealed them unto babes; even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently and to provoke him to speak of many things,

³ Therefore whatever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

⁵¹ Think ye that I am come to the earth to give peace? No, I tell you, but rather division;

⁴¹ So that those who gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. ⁴² ¶ And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship and in breaking of bread and in prayers.

I appeal unto Caesar.

For if through the offense of that one many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of one man, Jesus the Christ, has abounded unto many. ¹⁶ Nor was it in the same manner as by one sin, likewise also the gift; for the judgment truly came of one sin unto condemnation, but grace came of many offenses unto justification. ¹⁷ For if by one offense, death reigned because of one man; much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of gifts and of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus the Christ. ¹⁸ Therefore, in the same manner that by the iniquity of one guilt came upon all men unto condemnation, even so by the righteousness of one, grace came upon all men unto justification of life. ¹⁹ For as by one man’s disobedience, many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

⁵ Even so then at this present time also, there is a remnant by the gracious election of God. ⁶ And if by grace, then is it not by works; otherwise, the grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, then it is no longer grace; otherwise, the work is no longer work.

³⁵ Or who has first given unto him, that it be recompensed unto him again?

⁹ For to this end Christ both died and rose and revived: to thus exercise lordship over the dead as well as over the living. ¹⁰ But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou belittle thy brother? for we shall all stand before the tribunal of the Christ.

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise.

⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each one have praise of God.

¹⁰ We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil.

³⁶ and others experienced cruel mockings and scourgings, and added to this, bonds and imprisonment;

¹⁰ ¶ Of which saving health the prophets, (who prophesied of the grace that was to come in you) have enquired and searched diligently; ¹¹ searching when and in what point of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, which announced beforehand the afflictions that were to come upon the Christ, and the glory that should follow them. ¹² Unto whom it was revealed that not unto themselves, but unto us they did administer the things, which are now announced unto you by those that have preached the gospel unto you by the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into.

¹⁴ as obedient sons, not conforming yourselves with the former desires that you had before in your ignorance, ¹⁵ but as he who has called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

² as newborn babes, desire the rational milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby in health;

³ For it should suffice us that during the time past of our life we had done the will of the Gentiles, when we conversed in lasciviousness, lusts, drunkenness, gluttony, orgies, and abominable idolatries. ⁴ ¶ And it seems strange to those that speak evil of you, that ye do not run with them to the same unchecked dissolution;

¹⁹ ¶ We have also the most sure word of the prophets, unto which ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts, ²⁰ understanding this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. ²¹ For the prophecy did not come in times past by the will of man, but the holy men of God spoke being inspired by the Holy Spirit.

⁷ ¶ and delivered just Lot, who was persecuted by those abominable people because of their nefarious conversation;

⁷ but the heavens, which are now, and the earth are conserved by the same word, kept unto the fire in the day of judgment and of perdition of the ungodly men.

⁷ ¶ Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. ⁸ Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which is the truth in him and in you, because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines.

⁵ They are of the world; therefore, they speak of the world, and the world hears them. ⁶ We are of God; he that knows God hears us; he that is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

²⁰ But we know that the Son of God is come and has given us understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

¹⁴ And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his saints ¹⁵ ¶ to execute judgment upon all and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have unfaithfully committed and of all the hard words which the unfaithful sinners have spoken against him.
