⁴ Wealth adds many friends; and the poor is separated from his friend.

¹⁵ My brothers cover up as a wadi and as the reservoir of wadies, they pass away; ¹⁶ - darkened by the ice wherein the snow conceals; ¹⁷ by the time they dissipate they are exterminated; when it is hot they are extinguished from their place. ¹⁸ The paths of their way are turned aside; they ascend to waste and destruct. ¹⁹ The paths of Tema look; the caravans of Sheba await them; ²⁰ they shame because they had hoped; there they come and blush. ²¹ Surely now you are naught; you see my casting down and awe. ²² Said I, Bring me? or, Bribe me of your substance? ²³ or, Rescue me from the hand of the tribulator? or, Redeem me from the hand of the tyrant?

¹³ he removes my brothers from me; and they whom I know are verily estranged from me: ¹⁴ my neighbours decease and they whom I know forget me: ¹⁵ they who sojourn in my house and my maids fabricate me for a stranger - an alien in their eyes. ¹⁶ I call my servant and he answers not; I seek his charism with my mouth: ¹⁷ my spirit is strange to my woman and my charism to the sons of my belly:

¹⁵ The wealth of the rich is his city of strength; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

²⁰ The impoverished is hated even by his own friend; and many are they who love the rich.

⁶ Many stroke the face of the volunteer; and all are a friend of a man of gifts. ⁷ All the brothers hate the impoverished; how much more, his companions far from him. he pursues them with sayings; yet they are not.

¹³ And not many days after the younger son gathers all together and goes abroad to a distant region; and there squanders his substance with dissipative living ¹⁴ and he spends it all: and a mighty famine becomes in that region; and he begins to lack: ¹⁵ and he goes and joins himself to a citizen of that region: and he sends him into his fields to graze swine:
