⁴ Who are Israelites: to whom belongeth the adoption as of children and the glory and the testament and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises:

¹⁸ That day God made a covenant with Abram, saying: To thy seed will I give this land, from the river to Egypt even to the great river Euphrates.

² And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply thee exceedingly.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and between thy seed after thee in their generations, by a perpetual covenant: to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.

¹⁰ This is my covenant which you shall observe between me and you, and thy seed after thee: All the male kind of you shall be circumcised.

²⁸ But he said: Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if thou hast been strong against God, how much more shalt thou prevail against men?

²² And thou shalt say to him: Thus saith the Lord: Israel is my son, my firstborn.

²⁵ And when you have entered into the land which the Lord will give you, as he hath promised, you shall observe these ceremonies.

³ And Moses went up to God; and the Lord called unto him from the mountain, and said: Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: ⁴ You have seen what I have done to the Egyptians, how I have carried you upon the wings of eagles, and have taken you to myself. ⁵ If therefore you will hear my voice, and keep my covenant, you shall be my peculiar possession above all people: for all the earth is mine. ⁶ And you shall be to me a priestly kingdom, and a holy nation. These are the words thou shalt speak to the children of Israel.

⁷ And taking the book of the covenant, he read it in the hearing of the people: and they said: All things that the Lord hath spoken, we will do, we will be obedient. ⁸ And he took the blood and sprinkled it upon the people, and he said: This is the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.

²⁷ And the Lord said to Moses: Write thee these words, by which I have made a covenant both with thee and with Israel.

^{34 (40:32)} The cloud covered the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled it.

⁸⁹ And when Moses entered into the tabernacle of the covenant, to consult the oracle, he heard the voice of one speaking to him from the propitiatory, that is over the ark between the two cherubims, and from this place he spoke to him.

⁶ Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God. The Lord thy God hath chosen thee, to be his peculiar people of all peoples that are upon the earth.

¹ Be ye children of the Lord your God: you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness for the dead;

¹ These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab: beside that covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

¹⁴ Neither with you only do I make this covenant, and confirm these oaths,

¹⁶ And the Lord said to Moses: Behold thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, and this people rising up will go a fornicating after strange gods in the land, to which it goeth in to dwell: there will they forsake me, and will make void the covenant, which I have made with them,

²¹ And she called the child Ichabod, saying: The glory is gone from Israel, because the ark of God was taken, and for her father in law, and for her husband: ²² And she said: The glory is departed from Israel, because the ark of God was taken.

¹¹ And the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of the Lord.

¹³ Thou camest down also to mount Sinai, and didst speak with them from heaven, and thou gavest them right judgments, and the law of truth, ceremonies, and good precepts. ¹⁴ Thou madest known to them thy holy sabbath, and didst prescribe to them commandments, and ceremonies, and the law by the hand of Moses thy servant.

²⁹ Remember them, O Lord my God, that defile the priesthood, and the law of priests and Levites.

^{2 (63:3)} In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory.

¹ A psalm for Asaph. How good is God to Israel, to them that are of a right heart!

⁶¹ And he delivered their strength into captivity: and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.

^{3 (89:4)} I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant:

^{34 (89:35)} Neither will I profane my covenant: and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void.

¹⁶ Look upon thy servants and upon their works: and direct their children.

¹⁹ Who declareth his word to Jacob: his justices and his judgments to Israel.

² And he fenced it in, and picked the stones out of it, and planted it with the choicest vines, and built a tower in the midst thereof, and set up a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

⁸ But thou Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend:

³ Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel who are carried by my bowels, are borne up by my womb.

¹⁹ Thou shalt no more have the sun for thy light by day, neither shall the brightness of the moon enlighten thee: but the Lord shall be unto thee for an everlasting light, and thy God for thy glory.

⁹ They shall come with weeping: and I will bring them back in mercy: and I will bring them through the torrents of waters in a right way, and they shall not stumble in it: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

²⁰ Surely Ephraim is an honourable son to me, surely he is a tender child: for since I spoke of him, I will still remember him. Therefore are my bowels troubled for him: pitying I will pity him, saith the Lord.

³³ But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my law in their bowels, and I will write it in their heart: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

²⁰ Thus saith the Lord: if my covenant, with the day can be made void, and my covenant with the night, that there should not be day and night in their season: ²¹ Also my covenant with David my servant may be made void, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne, and with the Levites and priests my ministers. ²² As the stars of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea be measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites my ministers. ²³ And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying: ²⁴ Hast thou not seen what this people hath spoken, saying: The two families which the Lord had chosen, are cast off: and they have despised my people, so that it is no more a nation before them? ²⁵ Thus saith the Lord. If I have not set my covenant between day and night, and laws to heaven and earth:

¹¹ And I gave them my statutes, and I shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them. ¹² Moreover I gave them also my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them: and that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

¹ As the morning passeth, so hath the king of Israel passed away. Because Israel was a child, and I loved him: and I called my son out of Egypt.

³³ Hear ye another parable. There was a man, an householder, who planted a vineyard and made a hedge round about it and dug in it a press and built a tower and let it out to husbandmen and went into a strange country.

⁵⁴ He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy. ⁵⁵ As he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

⁶⁹ And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant. ⁷⁰ As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning. ⁷¹ Salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all that hate us. ⁷² To perform mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy testament. ⁷³ The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us. ⁷⁴ That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear: ⁷⁵ In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

¹⁷ For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.

³⁹ For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call.

²⁵ You are the children of the prophets and of the testament which God made to our fathers, saying to Abraham: And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. ²⁶ To you first, God, raising up his Son, hath sent him to bless you: that every one may convert himself from his wickedness.

³² And we declare unto you that the promise which was made to our fathers, ³³ This same God hath fulfilled to our children, raising up Jesus, as in the second psalm also is written: Thou art my Son: this day have I begotten thee.

² Much every way. First indeed, because the words of God were committed to them.

¹⁵ For you have not received the spirit of bondage again in fear: but you have received the spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry: Abba (Father).

⁶ Not as though the word of God hath miscarried. For all are not Israelites that are of Israel.

¹² That you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the conversation of Israel and strangers to the testament, having no hope of the promise and without God in this world.

¹³ For God making promises to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom he might swear, swore by himself, ¹⁴ Saying: Unless blessing I shall bless thee and multiplying I shall multiply thee. ¹⁵ And so patiently enduring he obtained the promise. ¹⁶ For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy. ¹⁷ Wherein God, meaning more abundantly to shew to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed an oath:

⁶ But now he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much also he is a mediator of a better testament which is established on better promises. ⁷ For if that former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second. ⁸ For, finding fault with them, he saith: Behold the days shall come, saith the Lord: and I will perfect, unto the house of Israel and unto the house of Juda, a new testament: ⁹ Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. ¹⁰ For this is the testament which I will make to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into their mind: and in their heart will I write them. And I will be their God: and they shall be my people.

¹ The former indeed had also justifications of divine service and a sanctuary.

³ And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies:

¹⁰ And divers washings and justices of the flesh laid on them until the time of correction.
