¹ Unto the end, understanding for David, ^(52:2) When Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul: David went to the house of Achimelech. ^(52:3) Why dost thou glory in malice, thou that art mighty in iniquity?

⁴ Now giants were upon the earth in those days. For after the sons of God went in to the daughters of men, and they brought forth children, these are the mighty men of old, men of renown. ⁵ And God seeing that the wickedness of men was great on the earth, and that all the thought of their heart was bent upon evil at all times,

⁸ Now Chus begot Nemrod: he began to be mighty on the earth. ⁹ And he was a stout hunter before the Lord. Hence came a proverb: Even as Nemrod the stout hunter before the Lord.

⁹ To do any fraud, either in ox, or in ass, or sheep, or raiment, or any thing that may bring damage: the cause of both parties shall come to the gods: and if they give judgment, he shall restore double to his neighbour.

⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, within the tabernacle of the Lord: and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of Saul's herdsmen.

⁹ And Doeg, the Edomite, who stood by, and was the chief among the servants of Saul, answering, said: I saw the son of Isai, in Nobe, with Achimelech, the son of Achitob, the priest. ¹⁰ And he consulted the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine. ¹¹ Then the king sent to call for Achimelech, the priest, the son of Achitob, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nobe, and they came all of them to the king. ¹² And Saul said to Achimelech: Hear, thou son of Achitob. He answered: Here I am, my lord. ¹³ And Saul said to him: Why have you conspired against me, thou, and the son of Isai, and thou hast given him bread and a sword, and hast consulted the Lord for him, that he should rise up against me, continuing a traitor to this day. ¹⁴ And Achimelech answering the king, said: And who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son in law, and goeth forth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house? ¹⁵ Did I begin to day to consult the Lord for him? far be this from me: let not the king suspect such a thing against his servant, or any one in all my father's house: for thy servant knew nothing of this matter, either little or great. ¹⁶ And the king said: Dying thou shalt die, Achimelech, thou and all thy father's house. ¹⁷ And the king said to the messengers that stood about him: Turn, and kill the priests of the Lord, for their hand is with David, because they knew that he was fled, and they told it not to me. And the king'sservants would not put forth their hands against the priests of the Lord. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg: Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned, and fell upon the priests, and slew in that day eighty-five men that wore the linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nobe, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and ox, and ass, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

^{14 (7:15)} Behold he hath been in labour with injustice: he hath conceived sorrow, and brought forth iniquity.

² Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire: they are caught in the counsels which they devise. ³ For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul: and the unjust man is blessed.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit: under his tongue are labour and sorrow.

^{3 (36:4)} The words of his mouth are iniquity and guile: he would not understand that he might do well. ^{4 (36:5)} He hath devised iniquity on his bed, he hath set himself on every way that is not good: but evil he hath not hated. ^{5 (36:6)} O Lord, thy mercy is in heaven, and thy truth reacheth even to the clouds. ^{6 (36:7)} Thy justice is as the mountains of God, thy judgments are a great deep. Men and beasts thou wilt preserve, O Lord:

^{3 (54:5)} For strangers have risen up against me; and the mighty have sought after my soul: and they have not set God before their eyes.

^{7 (59:8)} Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us?

⁴ Shall they utter, and speak iniquity: shall all speak who work injustice?

¹⁷ But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity and unto eternity upon them that fear him: And his justice unto children's children,

¹ Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

¹ Upon the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept: when we remembered Sion: ² On the willows in the midst thereof we hung up our instruments.

¹⁴ With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.

¹⁸ A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,

⁴ There is none that calleth upon justice, neither is there any one that judgeth truly: but they trust in a mere nothing, and speak vanities: they have conceived labour, and brought forth iniquity.

⁸ Their tongue is a piercing arrow, it hath spoken deceit: with his mouth one speaketh peace with his friend, and secretly he lieth in wait for him.

³ The evil of their hands they call good: the prince requireth, and the judge is for giving: and the great man hath uttered the desire of his soul, and they have troubled it.

³⁰ Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

² Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked,

⁷ Dearly beloved, let us love one another: for charity is of God. And every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. ⁸ He that loveth not knoweth not God: for God is charity.
