¹ Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith, shall not be wise.

²¹ And drinking of the wine was made drunk, and was uncovered in his tent. ²² Which when Cham the father of Chanaan had seen, to wit, that his father's nakedness was uncovered, he told it to his two brethren without. ²³ But Sem and Japheth put a cloak upon their shoulders, and going backward, covered the nakedness of their father: and their faces were turned away, and they saw not their father's nakedness.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal: and behold he had a feast in his house, like the feast of a king: and Nabal's heart was merry, for he was very drunk: and she told him nothing less or more until morning. ³⁷ But early in the morning, when Nabal had digested his wine, his wife told him these words, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And after ten days had passed, the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

²⁹ Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink off their cups. ³¹ Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly, ³² But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk. ³³ Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep when the stern is lost. ³⁵ And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake and find wine again?

⁴ Give not to kings, O Lamuel, give not wine to kings: because there is no secret where drunkenness reigneth:

²² Woe to you that are mighty to drink wine, and stout men at drunkenness.

⁷ But these also have been ignorant through wine, and through drunkenness have erred: the priest and the prophet have been ignorant through drunkenness, they are swallowed up with wine, they have gone astray in drunkenness, they have not known him that seeth, they have been ignorant of judgment.

¹² Come, let us take wine, and be filled with drunkenness: and it shall be as to day, so also to morrow, and much more.

¹¹ Fornication, and wine, and drunkenness, take away the understanding.

⁵ The day of our king, the princes began to be mad with wine: he stretched out his hand with scorners.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury: but be ye filled with the Holy Spirit,
