And the priest shall offer it all and burn it all upon the altar for a holocaust, and most sweet savour to the Lord. ¹⁴ But if the oblation of a holocaust to the Lord be of birds, of turtles, or of young pigeons: ¹⁵ The priest shall offer it at the altar: and twisting back the neck, and breaking the place of the wound, he shall make the blood run down upon the brim of the altar. ¹⁶ But the crop of the throat, and the feathers he shall cast beside the altar at the east side, in the place where the ashes are wont to be poured out. ¹⁷ And he shall break the pinions thereof, and shall not cut, nor divide it with a knife: and shall burn it upon the altar, putting fire under the wood. It is a holocaust and oblation of most sweet savour to the Lord.

And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him. ²³ The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way, ²⁴ The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed. ²⁵ And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:

¹⁹ His prayer also, and his being heard and all his sins, and contempt, and places wherein he built high places, and set up groves, and statues before he did penance, are written in the words of Hozai.

The prophet also and the priest are gone into a land which they knew not. ¹⁹ Hast thou utterly cast away Juda, or hath thy soul abhorred Sion? why then hast thou struck us, so that there is no healing for us? we have looked for peace, and there is no good: and for the time of healing, and behold trouble. ²⁰ We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, the iniquities of our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. ²¹ Give us not to be a reproach, for thy name's sake, and do not disgrace in us the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us. ²² Are there any among the graven things of the Gentiles that can send rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou the Lord our God, whom we have looked for? for thou hast made all these things.

⁹ And I will visit in that day upon every one that entereth arrogantly over the threshold: them that fill the house of the Lord their God with iniquity and deceit.

¹³ And their strength shall become a booty, and their houses as a desert: and they shall build houses, and shall not dwell in them: and they shall plant vineyards, and shall not drink the wine of them.

³ Seek the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, you that have wrought his judgment: seek the just, seek the meek: if by any means you may be hid in the day of the Lord's indignation.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance. ⁹ And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. ¹⁰ For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁷ Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

³² Then his lord called him: and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me: ³³ Shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant, even as I had compassion on thee? ³⁴ And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt. ³⁵ So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.

⁷ And crying with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus the Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not.

³⁰ And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind and with thy whole strength. This is the first commandment. ³¹ And the second is like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. ³² And the scribe said to him: Well, Master, thou hast said in truth that there is one God and there is no other besides him. ³³ And that he should be loved with the whole heart and with the whole understanding and with the whole soul and with the whole strength. And to love one's neighbour as one's self is a greater thing than all holocausts and sacrifices. ³⁴ And Jesus seeing that he had answered wisely, said to him: Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

⁴⁰ To whom he said: I say to you that if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre: with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully. The venom of asps is under their lips.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law speaketh, it speaketh to them that are in the law: that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may be made subject to God.

²⁰ But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

⁶ But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble. ⁷ Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil: and he will fly from you. ⁸ Draw nigh to God: and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into sorrow. ¹⁰ Be humbled in the sight of the Lord: and he will exalt you.

¹ Go to now, ye rich men: weep and howl in your miseries, which shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted: and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is cankered: and the rust of them shall be for a testimony against you and shall eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up to yourselves wrath against the last days. ⁴ Behold the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which by fraud has been kept back by you, crieth: and the cry of them hath entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

⁸ And in fine, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, being lovers of the brotherhood, merciful, modest, humble:

⁵ In like manner, ye young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another: for God resisteth the proud, but to the humble he giveth grace. ⁶ Be you humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:

⁵ And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue: And in virtue, knowledge: ⁶ And in knowledge, abstinence: and in abstinence, patience: and in patience, godliness: ⁷ And in godliness, love of brotherhood: and in love of brotherhood, charity. ⁸ For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁵ Leaving the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor who loved the wages of iniquity,

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all iniquity.

¹¹ Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain: and after the error of Balaam they have for reward poured out themselves and have perished in the contradiction of Core.

¹⁴ But I have against thee a few things: because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat and to commit fornication.

²⁰ But I have against thee a few things: because thou sufferest the woman Jezabel, who calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants, to commit fornication and to eat of things sacrificed to idols.

¹⁹ Such as I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore and do penance.
