¹ At that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Who, thinkest thou, is the greater in the kingdom of heaven?

² And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

¹⁹ He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²¹ Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁰ Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him. ²¹ Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom. ²² And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can. ²³ He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father. ²⁴ And the ten, hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren. ²⁵ But Jesus called them to him and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and that they that are the greater, exercise power upon them. ²⁶ It shall not be so among you: but whosoever is the greater among you, let him be your minister. ²⁷ And he that will be first among you shall be your servant. ²⁸ Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

¹¹ He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.

^{33 (9:32)} And they came to Capharnaum. And when they were in the house, he asked them: What did you treat of in the way? ^{34 (9:33)} But they held their peace, for in the way they had disputed among themselves, which of them should be the greatest. ^{35 (9:34)} And sitting down, he called the twelve and saith to them: If any man desire to be first, he shall be the last of all and be minister of all. ^{36 (9:35)} And taking a child, he set him in the midst of them. Whom when he had embraced, he saith to them: ^{37 (9:36)} Whosoever shall receive one such child as this in my name receiveth me. And whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me but him that sent me.

¹⁴ Whom when Jesus saw, he was much displeased and saith to them: Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it.

³⁵ And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to him, saying: Master, we desire that whatsoever we shall ask, thou wouldst do it for us. ³⁶ But he said to them: What would you that I should do for you? ³⁷ And they said: Grant to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. ³⁸ And Jesus said to them: You know not what you ask. Can you drink of the chalice that I drink of or be baptized with the baptism wherewith I am baptized? ³⁹ But they said to him: We can. And Jesus saith to them: You shall indeed drink of the chalice that I drink of; and with the baptism wherewith I am baptized you shall be baptized. ⁴⁰ But to sit on my right hand or on my left is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared. ⁴¹ And the ten, hearing it, began to be much displeased at James and John. ⁴² But Jesus calling them, saith to them: You know that they who seem to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them: and their princes have power over them. ⁴³ But it is not so among you: but whosoever will be greater shall be your minister. ⁴⁴ And whosoever will be first among you shall be the servant of all. ⁴⁵ For the Son of man also is not come to be ministered unto: but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

⁴⁶ And there entered a thought into them, which of them should be greater. ⁴⁷ But Jesus seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and set him by him, ⁴⁸ And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.

²⁴ And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater. ²⁵ And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent. ²⁶ But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger: and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. ²⁷ For which is greater, he that sitteth at table or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth.

¹⁰ Loving one another with the charity of brotherhood: with honour preventing one another.

³ Let nothing be done through contention: neither by vain glory. But in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves:
