³ But he said to them: Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and they that were with him:

³ Now therefore if thou have any thing at hand, though it were but five loaves, give me, or whatsoever thou canst find. ⁴ And the priest answered David, saying: I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread, if the young men be clean, especially from women? ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him: Truly, as to what concerneth women, we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before, when we came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy. Now this way is defiled, but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels. ⁶ The priest therefore gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there, but only the loaves of proposition, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, that hot loaves might be set up.

⁵ Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are without blame?

⁴ Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? And he said:

¹⁶ And said to him: Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yea, have you never read: Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

³¹ And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:

²⁵ And he said to them: Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry, himself and they that were with him? ²⁶ How he went into the house of God, under Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the loaves of proposition, which was not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave to them who were with him?
