¹³ And not many days after, the younger son, gathering all together, went abroad into a far country: and there wasted his substance, living riotously.

¹ Manasses was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. ² And he did evil before the Lord, according to all the abominations of the nations, which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel: ³ And he turned, and built again the high places which Ezechias his father had destroyed: and he built altars to Baalim, and made groves, and he adored all the host of heaven, and worshipped them. ⁴ He built also altars in the house of the Lord, whereof the Lord had said: In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever. ⁵ And he built them for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. ⁶ And he made his sons to pass through the fire in the valley of Benennom: he observed dreams, followed divinations, gave himself up to magic arts, had with him magicians, and enchanters: and he wrought many evils before the Lord, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ He set also a graven, and a molten statue in the house of God, of which God had said to David, and to Solomon his son: In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever. ⁸ And I will not make the foot of Israel to be removed out of the land which I have delivered to their fathers: yet so if they will take heed to do what I have commanded them, and all the law, and the ceremonies, and judgments by the hand of Moses. ⁹ So Manasses seduced Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to do evil beyond all the nations, which the Lord had destroyed before the face of the children of Israel. ¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to his people, and they would not hearken.

¹³ They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment they go down to hell. ¹⁴ Who have said to God: Depart from us, we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what doth it profit us if we pray to him?

¹⁷ Who said to God: Depart from us: and looked upon the Almighty as if he could do nothing: ¹⁸ Whereas he had filled their houses with good things: whose way of thinking be far from me.

⁴ The sinner hath provoked the Lord, according to the multitude of his wrath, he will not seek him: ⁵ God is not before his eyes: his ways are filthy at all times. Thy judgments are removed form his sight: he shall rule over all his enemies. ⁶ For he hath said in his heart: I shall not be moved from generation to generation, and shall be without evil.

²⁷ For behold they that go far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that are disloyal to thee.

⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the doors of her house. ⁹ Give not thy honour to strangers, and thy years to the cruel. ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength, and thy labours be in another man's house, ¹¹ And thou mourn at the last, when thou shalt have spent thy flesh and thy body, and say; ¹² Why have I hated instruction, and my heart consented not to reproof, ¹³ And have not heard the voice of them that taught me, and have not inclined my ear to masters? ¹⁴ I have almost been in all evil, in the midst of the church and of the congregation.

²⁶ For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.

⁹ He that is loose and slack in his work, is the brother of him that wasteth his own works.

¹⁷ He that loveth good cheer, shall be in want: he that loveth wine, and fat things, shall not be rich.

²⁰ There is a treasure to be desired, and oil in the dwelling of the just: and the foolish man shall spend it.

¹⁹ Hear thou, my son, and be wise: and guide thy mind in the way. ²⁰ Be not in the feasts of great drinkers, nor in their revellings, who contribute flesh to eat: ²¹ Because they that give themselves to drinking, and that club together, shall be consumed: and drowsiness shall be clothed with rags. ²² Hearken to thy father, that begot thee: and despise not thy mother when she is old.

⁸ As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that leaveth his place.

⁷ He that keepeth the law, is a wise son: but he that feedeth gluttons, shameth his father.

³ A man that loveth wisdom, rejoiceth his father: but he that maintaineth harlots, shall squander away his substance.

⁹ Rejoice therefore, O young man, in thy youth, and let thy heart be in that which is good in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thy eyes: and know that for all these God will bring thee into judgment. ¹⁰ Remove anger from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh. For youth and pleasure are vain.

⁴ Woe to the sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a wicked seed, ungracious children: they have forsaken the Lord, they have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel, they are gone away backwards.

¹³ And behold joy and gladness, killing calves, and slaying rams, eating flesh, and drinking wine: Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.

¹¹ Take away from me the way, turn away the path from me, let the Holy One of Israel cease from before us.

¹² Come, let us take wine, and be filled with drunkenness: and it shall be as to day, so also to morrow, and much more.

⁵ Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

¹³ For my people have done two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

¹⁷ Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God at that time, when he led thee by the way? ¹⁸ And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water? And what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of the river? ¹⁹ Thy own wickedness shall reprove thee, and thy apostasy shall rebuke thee. Know thou, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing for thee, to have left the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not with thee, saith the Lord the God of hosts.

³¹ See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more?

³ You that are separated unto the evil day: and that approach to the throne of iniquity; ⁴ You that sleep upon beds of ivory, and are wanton on your couches: that eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the herd; ⁵ You that sing to the sound of the psaltery: they have thought themselves to have instruments of music like David; ⁶ That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments: and they are not concerned for the affliction of Joseph. ⁷ Wherefore now they shall go captive at the head of them that go into captivity: and the faction of the luxurious ones shall be taken away.

³ O my people, what have I done to thee, or in what have I molested thee? answer thou me.

³⁰ But as soon as this thy son is come, who hath devoured his substance with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

¹ And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and feasted sumptuously every day.

¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy. ¹⁴ But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ: and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences.

¹³ But now in Christ Jesus, you, who some time were afar off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

¹⁷ And coming, he preached peace to you that were afar off: and peace to them that were nigh.

³ For the time past is sufficient to have fulfilled the will of the Gentiles, for them who have walked in riotousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings and unlawful worshipping of idols. ⁴ Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them into the same confusion of riotousness: speaking evil of you.

¹³ Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you:
