²⁰ They that come after him shall be astonished at his day, and horror shall fall upon them that went before.

²³ Burning it with brimstone, and the heat of salt, so that it cannot be sown any more, nor any green thing grow therein, after the example of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha, Adama and Seboim, which the Lord destroyed in his wrath and indignation: ²⁴ And all the nations shall say: Why hath the Lord done thus to this land? what meaneth this exceeding great heat of his wrath?

⁸ And this house shall be made an example of: every one that shall pass by it, shall be astonished, and shall hiss, and say: Why hath the Lord done thus to this land, and to this house?

¹² And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out, they wept, and rending their garments, they sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. ¹³ And they sat with him on the ground seven day and seven nights and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹³ He hath put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintance like strangers have departed from me. ¹⁴ My kinsmen have forsaken me, and they that knew me, have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in my house, and my maidservants have counted me as a stranger, and I have been like an alien in their eyes. ¹⁶ I called my servant, and he gave me no answer, I entreated him with my own mouth. ¹⁷ My wife hath abhorred my breath, and I entreated the children of my womb. ¹⁸ Even fools despised me, and when I was gone from them, they spoke against me. ¹⁹ They that were sometime my counsellors, have abhorred me: and he whom I loved most is turned against me.

¹³ But the Lord shall laugh at him: for he foreseeth that his day shall come.

⁷ Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem: Who say: Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

¹⁶ That their land might be given up to desolation, and to a perpetual hissing: every one that shall pass by it, shall be astonished, and wag his head.

²⁷ Destroy all her valiant men, let them go down to the slaughter: woe to them, for their day is come, the time of their visitation.

²⁵ But thou profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come that hath been appointed in the time of iniquity:

¹¹ In the day when thou stoodest against him, when strangers carried away his army captive, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem: thou also wast as one of them. ¹² But thou shalt not look on in the day of thy brother, in the day of his leaving his country: and thou shalt not rejoice over the children of Juda, in the day of their destruction: and thou shalt not magnify thy mouth in the day of distress. ¹³ Neither shalt thou enter into the gate of my people in the day of their ruin: neither shalt thou also look on in his evils in the day of his calamity: and thou shalt not be sent out against his army in the day of his desolation. ¹⁴ Neither shalt thou stand in the crossways to kill them that flee: and thou shalt not shut up them that remain of him in the day of tribulation. ¹⁵ For the day of the Lord is at hand upon all nations: as thou hast done, so shall it be done to thee: he will turn thy reward upon thy own head.

⁴² If thou also hadst known, and that in this thy day, the things that are to thy peace: but now they are hidden from thy eyes.

⁴⁴ And beat thee flat to the ground, and thy children who are in thee. And they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou hast not known the time of thy visitation.
