¹ My soul is weary of my life, I will let go my speech against myself, I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁵ But if it seem unto thee otherwise, I beseech thee to kill me, and let me find grace in thy eyes, that I be not afflicted with so great evils.

⁴ And he went forward, one day's journey into the desert. And when he was there, and sat under a juniper tree, he requested for his soul that he might die, and said: It is enough for me, Lord; take away my soul: for I am no better than my fathers.

²⁰ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to them that are in bitterness of soul? ²¹ That look for death, and it cometh not, as they that dig for a treasure: ²² And they rejoice exceedingly when they have found the grave? ²³ To a man whose way is hidden, and God hath surrounded him with darkness?

¹⁵ But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent. ¹⁶ And to the needy there shall be hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth.

²⁰ In famine he shall deliver thee from death; and in battle, from the hand of the sword.

² O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance. ³ As the sand of the sea, this would appear heavier: therefore, my words are full of sorrow: ⁴ For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.

⁸ Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for? ⁹ And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?

²⁶ You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.

¹¹ Wherefore, I will not spare my month, I will speak in the affliction of my spirit: I will talk with the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁶ I have done with hope, I shall now live no longer: spare me, for my days are nothing.

²¹ Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.

¹⁵ And if I be wicked, woe unto me: and if just, I shall not lift up my head, being filled with affliction and misery. ¹⁶ And for pride thou wilt take me as a lioness, and returning, thou tormentest me wonderfully.

¹³ Who will grant me this, that thou mayst protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me?

If I speak, my pain will not rest: and if I hold my peace, it will not depart from me. ^{7 (16:8)} But now my sorrow hath oppressed me, and all my limbs are brought to nothing. ^{8 (16:9)} My wrinkles bear witness against me, and a false speaker riseth up against my face, contradicting me. ^{9 (16:10)} He hath gathered together his fury against me, and threatening me he hath gnashed with his teeth upon me: my enemy hath beheld me with terrible eyes. ^{10 (16:11)} They have opened their mouths upon me, and reproaching me they have struck me on the cheek, they are filled with my pains. ^{11 (16:12)} God hath shut me up with the unjust man, and hath delivered me into the hands of the wicked. ^{12 (16:13)} I that was formerly so wealthy, am all on a sudden broken to pieces: he hath taken me by my neck, he hath broken me, and hath set me up to be his mark. ^{13 (16:14)} He hath compassed me round about with his lances, he hath wounded my loins, he hath not spared, and hath poured out my bowels on the earth, ^{14 (16:15)} He hath torn me with wound upon wound, he hath rushed in upon me like a giant. ^{15 (16:16)} I have sowed sackcloth upon my skin, and have covered my flesh with ashes. ^{16 (16:17)} My face is swollen with weeping, and my eyelids are dim.

⁴ For if I have been ignorant, my ignorance shall be with me.

² Hear, I beseech you, my words, and do penance. ³ Suffer me, and I will speak, and after, if you please, laugh at my words. ⁴ Is my debate against man, that I should not have just reason to be troubled?

³ Because I was silent my bones grew old; whilst I cried out all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I am turned in my anguish, whilst the thorn is fastened. ⁵ I have acknowledged my sin to thee, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess against my self my injustice to the Lord: and thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin.

¹⁵ What shall I say, or what shall he answer for me, whereas he himself hath done it? I will recount to thee all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁷ Behold in peace is my bitterness most bitter: but thou hast delivered my soul that it should not perish, thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

³ And now, O Lord, I beseech thee take my life from me: for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And when the sun was risen, the Lord commanded a hot and burning wind: and the sun beat upon the head of Jonas, and he broiled with the heat: and he desired for his soul that he might die, and said: It is better for me to die than to live.
