¹⁰ Take, my brethren, for example of suffering evil, of labour and patience, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused the prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

³⁴ Therefore behold I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify: and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. ³⁵ That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. ³⁷ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldst not?

²³ Be glad in that day and rejoice: for behold, your reward is great in heaven, For according to these things did their fathers to the prophets.

³⁴ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets; and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children as the bird doth her brood under her wings, and thou wouldest not?

²¹ Whom heaven indeed must receive, until the times of the restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the beginning of the world.

⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them who foretold of the coming of the Just One: of whom you have been now the betrayers and murderers.

For the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, Barac, Samson, Jephthe, David, Samuel, and the prophets: ³³ Who by faith conquered kingdoms, wrought justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, ³⁴ Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, recovered strength from weakness, became valiant in battle, put to flight the armies of foreigners. ³⁵ Women received their dead raised to life again. But others were racked, not accepting deliverance, that they might find a better resurrection. ³⁶ And others had trial of mockeries and stripes: moreover also of bands and prisons. ³⁷ They were stoned, they were cut asunder, they were tempted, they were put to death by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being in want, distressed, afflicted: ³⁸ Of whom the world was not worthy: wandering in deserts, in mountains and in dens and in caves of the earth.
