³³ Jacob said: Swear therefore to me. Esau swore to him, and sold his first birthright.

²² And he answered him: I lift up my hand to the Lord God the most high, the possessor of heaven and earth,

³ That I may make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that thou take not a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Chanaanites, among whom I dwell:

³⁶ But he said again: Rightly is his name called Jacob; for he hath supplanted me lo this second time: My birthright he took away before, and now this second time he hath stolen away my blessing. And again he said to his father: Hast thou not reserved me also a blessing?

⁶ And Esau took his wives, and his sons and daughters, and every soul of his house, and his substance, and cattle, and all that he was able to acquire in the land of Chanaan: and went into another country, and departed from his brother Jacob. ⁷ For they were exceeding rich, and could not dwell together: neither was the land in which they sojourned able to bear them, for the multitude of their flocks.

²³ And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom.

¹⁶ For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy.
