³ That I may make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that thou take not a wife for my son, of the daughters of the Chanaanites, among whom I dwell:

² The sons of God seeing the daughters of men, that they were fair, took to themselves wives of all which they chose.

⁴ Now giants were upon the earth in those days. For after the sons of God went in to the daughters of men, and they brought forth children, these are the mighty men of old, men of renown.

¹⁵ And Chanaan begot Sidon his firstborn, the Hethite, ¹⁶ And the Jebusite, and the Amorrhite, and the Gergesite. ¹⁷ The Hevite and Aracite: the Sinite, ¹⁸ And the Aradian, the Samarite, and the Hamathite: and afterwards the families of the Chanaanites were spread abroad. ¹⁹ And the limits of Chanaan were from Sidon as one comes to Gerara even to Gaza, until thou enter Sodom and Gomorrha, and Adama, and Seboim even to Lesa.

¹⁹ Blessed him, and said: Blessed be Abram by the most high God, who created heaven and earth.

²² And he answered him: I lift up my hand to the Lord God the most high, the possessor of heaven and earth,

²³ Swear therefore by God, that thou wilt not hurt me, nor my posterity, nor my stock: but according to the kindness that I have done to thee, thou shalt do to me, and to the land wherein thou hast lived a stranger.

²⁸ And they answered: We saw that the Lord is with thee, and therefore we said: Let there be an oath between us, and let us make a covenant, ²⁹ That thou do us no harm, as we on our part have touched nothing of thine, nor have done any thing to hurt thee; but with peace have sent thee away, increased with the blessing of the Lord. ³⁰ And he made them a feast, and after they had eaten and drunk: ³¹ Arising in the morning, they swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away peaceably to their own home.

³⁴ And Esau being forty years old, married wives, Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hethite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon, of the same place. ³⁵ And they both offended the mind of Isaac and Rebecca.

⁴⁶ And Rebecca said to Isaac: I am weary of my life, because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the stock of this land, I choose not to live.

⁸ Experiencing also, that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan:

⁴⁴ Come, therefore, let us enter into a league; that it may be for a testimony between me and thee. ⁴⁵ And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a title. ⁴⁶ And he said to his brethren: Bring hither stones. And they, gathering stones together, made a heap, and they ate upon it. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it, The witness heap; and Jacob, The hillock of testimony: each of them according to the propriety of his language. ⁴⁸ And Laban said: This heap shall be a witness between me and thee this day, and therefore the name thereof was called Galaad, that is, The witness heap. ⁴⁹ The Lord behold and judge between us, when we shall be gone one from the other. ⁵⁰ If thou afflict my daughters, and if thou bring in other wives over them: none is witness of our speech but God, who is present and beholdeth. ⁵¹ And he said again to Jacob: Behold this heap, and the stone which I have set up between me and thee, ⁵² Shall be a witness: this heap, I say, and the stone, be they for a testimony, if either I shall pass beyond it going towards thee, or thou shalt pass beyond it thinking harm to me. ⁵³ The God of Abraham, and the God of Nachor, the God of their father, judge betweeen us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac:

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that shall take the name of the Lord his God in vain.

¹¹ There shall be an oath between them, that he did not put forth his hand to his neighbour's goods: and the owner shall accept of the oath, and he shall not be compelled to make restitution.

¹³ Keep all things that I have said to you. And by the name of strange gods you shall not swear, neither shall it be heard out of your mouth.

¹⁶ Neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son, lest after they themselves have committed fornication, they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods.

¹² Thou shalt not swear falsely by my name, nor profane the name of thy God. I am the Lord.

²¹ These curses shall light upon thee: The Lord make thee a curse, and an example for all among his people: may he make thy thigh to rot, and may thy belly swell and burst asunder.

¹³ Take heed deligently lest thou forget the Lord, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and shalt serve him only, and thou shalt swear by his name.

³ Neither shalt thou make marriages with them. Thou shalt not give thy daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for thy son: ⁴ For she will turn away thy son from following me, that he may rather serve strange gods, and the wrath of the Lord will be kindled, and will quickly destroy thee.

²⁰ Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him only: to him thou shalt adhere, and shalt swear by his name.

¹² Now, therefore, swear ye to me by the Lord, that as I have shewed mercy to you, so you also will shew mercy to my father's house: and give me a true token.

¹⁷ And Jonathan swore again to David, because he loved him: for he loved him as his own soul.

¹⁵ And he prayed in his sight, saying: O Lord God of Israel, who sittest upon the cherubims, thou alone art the God of all the kings of the earth: thou madest heaven and earth:

¹² And he added, saying: Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who hath given to king David a wise and knowing son, endued with understanding and prudence, to build a house to the Lord, and a palace for himself.

⁶ Thou thyself, O Lord alone, thou hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all the host thereof: the earth and all things that are in it: the seas and all that are therein: and thou givest life to all these things, and the host of heaven adoreth thee.

²⁵ And I chid them, and laid my curse upon them. And I beat some of them, and shaved off their hair, and made them swear by God that they would not give their daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for their sons, nor for themselves, saying:

¹⁵ Blessed be you of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

²³ I have sworn by myself, the word of justice shall go out of my mouth, and shall not return: ^(45:24) For every knee shall be bowed to me, and every tongue shall swear.

¹ Hear ye these things, O house of Jacob, you that are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Juda, you who swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in justice.

¹⁶ In which he that is blessed upon the earth, shall be blessed in God, amen: and he that sweareth in the earth, shall swear by God, amen: because the former distresses are forgotten, and because they are hid from my eyes.

² And thou shalt swear: As the Lord liveth, in truth, and in judgment, and in justice: and the Gentiles shall bless him, and shall praise him.

¹¹ Thus then shall you say to them: The gods that have not made heaven and earth, let them perish from the earth, and from among those places that are under heaven.

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, if they will be taught, and will learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name: The Lord liveth, as they have taught my people to swear by Baal: that they shall be built up in the midst of my people.

⁵ And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.

³⁹ A woman is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth: but if her husband die, she is at liberty. Let her marry to whom she will: only in the Lord.

¹⁴ Bear not the yoke with unbelievers. For what participation hath justice with injustice? Or what fellowship hath light with darkness? ¹⁵ And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath the faithful with the unbeliever? ¹⁶ And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God: as God saith: I will dwell in them and walk among them. And I will be their God: and they shall be my people. ¹⁷ Wherefore: Go out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing:

¹⁶ For men swear by one greater than themselves: and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy.
