⁴ Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth.

¹ And the people seeing that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, gathering together against Aaron, said: Arise, make us gods, that may go before us: For as to this Moses, the man that brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has befallen him.

⁸ They have quickly strayed from the way which thou didst shew them: and they have made to themselves a molten calf, and have adored it, and sacrificing victims to it, have said: These are thy gods, O Israel, that have brought thee out of the land of Egypt.

²³ They said to me: make us gods, that may go before us; for as to this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is befallen him.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not make to thyself any molten gods.

⁴ Turn ye not to idols: nor make to yourselves molten gods. I am the Lord your God.

¹ I am the Lord your God. You shall not make to yourselves any idol or graven thing: neither shall you erect pillars, nor set up a remarkable stone in your land, to adore it. For I am the Lord your God.

¹⁵ Keep therefore your souls carefully. You saw not any similitude in the day that the Lord God spoke to you in Horeb from the midst of the fire: ¹⁶ Lest perhaps being deceived you might make you a graven similitude, or image of male or female, ¹⁷ The similitude of any beasts, that are upon the earth, or of birds, that fly under heaven, ¹⁸ Or of creeping things, that move on the earth, or of fishes, that abide in the waters under the earth: ¹⁹ Lest perhaps lifting up thy eyes to heaven, thou see the sun and the moon, and all the stars of heaven, and being deceived by error thou adore and serve them, which the Lord thy God created for the service of all the nations, that are under heaven.

²³ Beware lest thou ever forget the covenant of the Lord thy God, which he hath made with thee: and make to thyself a graven likeness of those things which the Lord hath forbid to be made: ²⁴ Because the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. ²⁵ If you shall beget sons and grandsons, and abide in the land, and being deceived, make to yourselves any similitude, committing evil before the Lord your God, to provoke him to wrath:

⁸ Thou shalt not make to thy self a graven thing, nor the likeness of any things, that are in heaven above, or that are in the earth beneath, or that abide in the waters under the earth.

¹⁵ Cursed be the man that maketh a graven and molten thing, the abomination of the Lord, the work of the hands of artificers, and shall put it in a secret place: and all the people shall answer and say: Amen.

²⁸ And finding out a device, he made two golden calves, and said to them: Go ye up no more to Jerusalem: Behold thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt.

⁷ He set also a graven, and a molten statue in the house of God, of which God had said to David, and to Solomon his son: In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever.

⁷ Let them be all confounded that adore graven things, and that glory in their idols. Adore him, all you his angels:

⁴ The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, the works of the hands of men. ⁵ They have mouths and speak not: they have eyes and see not. ⁶ They have ears and hear not: they have noses and smell not. ⁷ They have hands and feel not: they have feet and walk not: neither shall they cry out through their throat. ⁸ Let them that make them become like unto them: and all such as trust in them.

¹⁵ The idols of the Gentiles are silver and gold, the works of men's hands. ¹⁶ They have a mouth, but they speak not: they have eyes, but they see not. ¹⁷ They have ears, but they hear not: neither is there any breath in their mouths. ¹⁸ Let them that make them be like to them: and every one that trusteth in them.

¹⁸ To whom then have you likened God? or what image will you make for him? ¹⁹ Hath the workman cast a graven statue? or hath the goldsmith formed it with gold, or the silversmith with plates of silver? ²⁰ He hath chosen strong wood, and that will not rot: the skilful workman seeketh how he may set up an idol that may not be moved.

⁸ I the Lord, this is my name: I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to graven things.

¹⁷ They are turned back: let them be greatly confounded, that trust in a graven thing, that say to a molten thing: You are our god.

⁹ The makers of idols are all of them nothing, and their best beloved things shall not profit them. They are their witnesses, that they do not see, nor understand, that they may be ashamed. ¹⁰ Who hath formed a god, and made a graven thing that is profitable for nothing? ¹¹ Behold, all the partakers thereof shall be confounded: for the makers are men: they shall all assemble together, they shall stand and fear, and shall be confounded together. ¹² The smith hath wrought with his file, with coals, and with hammers he hath formed it, and hath wrought with the strength of his arm: he shall hunger and faint, he shall drink no water, and shall be weary. ¹³ The carpenter hath stretched out his rule, he hath formed it with a plane: he hath made it with corners, and hath fashioned it round with the compass: and he hath made the image of a man as it were a beautiful man dwelling in a house. ¹⁴ He hath cut down cedars, taken the holm, and the oak that stood among the trees of the forest: he hath planted the pine tree, which the rain hath nourished. ¹⁵ And it hath served men for fuel: he took thereof, and warmed himself: and he kindled it, and baked bread: but of the rest he made a god, and adored it: he made a graven thing, and bowed down before it. ¹⁶ Part of it he burnt with fire, and with part of it he dressed his meat: he boiled pottage, and was filled, and was warmed, and said: Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire. ¹⁷ But the residue thereof he made a god, and a graven thing for himself: he boweth down before it, and adoreth it, and prayeth unto it, saying: Deliver me, for thou art my God. ¹⁸ They have not known, nor understood: for their eyes are covered that they may not see, and that they may not understand with their heart. ¹⁹ They do not consider in their mind, nor know, nor have the thought to say: I have burnt part of it in the fire, and I have baked bread upon the coals thereof: I have broiled flesh and have eaten, and of the residue thereof shall I make an idol? shall I fall down before the stock of a tree? ²⁰ Part thereof is ashes: his foolish heart adoreth it, and he will not save his soul, nor say: Perhaps there is a lie in my right hand.

¹⁶ They are all confounded and ashamed: the forgers of errors are gone together into confusion.

⁵ To whom have you likened me, and made me equal, and compared me, and made me like? ⁶ You that contribute gold out of the bag, and weigh out silver in the scales: and hire a goldsmith to make a god: and they fall down and worship. ⁷ They bear him on their shoulders and carry him, and set him in his place, and he shall stand, and shall not stir out of his place. Yea, when they shall cry also unto him, he shall not hear: he shall not save them from tribulation. ⁸ Remember this, and be ashamed: return, ye transgressors, to the heart.

³ For the laws of the people are vain: for the works of the hand of the workman hath cut a tree out of the forest with an axe. ⁴ He hath decked it with silver and gold: he hath put it together with nails and hammers, that it may not fall asunder. ⁵ They are framed after the likeness of a palm tree, and shall not speak: they must be carried to be removed, because they cannot go. Therefore fear them not, for they can neither do evil nor good.

⁸ They shall be all proved together to be senseless and foolish: the doctrine of their vanity is wood. ⁹ Silver spread into plates is brought from Tharsis, and gold from Ophaz: the work of the artificer, and of the hand of the coppersmith: violet and purple is their clothing: all these things are the work of artificers.

¹⁴ Every man is become a fool for knowledge, every artist is confounded in his graven idol: for what he hath cast is false, and there is no spirit in them. ¹⁵ They are vain things, and a ridiculous work: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. ¹⁶ The portion of Jacob is not like these: for it is he who formed all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the Lord of hosts is his name.

¹⁰ And I went in and saw, and behold every form of creeping things, and of living creatures, the abominations, and all the idols of the house of Israel, were painted on the wall all round about.

²⁹ Being therefore the offspring of God, we must not suppose the divinity to be like unto gold or silver or stone, the graving of art and device of man.

²⁶ And you see and hear that this Paul, by persuasion hath drawn away a great multitude, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying: they are not gods which are made by hands. ²⁷ So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also the temple of great Diana shall be reputed for nothing! Yea, and her majesty shall begin to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. ²⁸ Having heard these things, they were full of anger and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians! ²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion. And having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. ³⁰ And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. ³¹ And some also of the rulers of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, desiring that he would not venture himself into the theatre. ³² Now some cried one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused: and the greater part knew not for what cause they were come together. ³³ And they drew forth Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand for silence, would have given the people satisfaction, ³⁴ But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two, hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians! ³⁵ And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana and of Jupiter's offspring?

²³ And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts and of creeping things.

²⁰ And the rest of the men, who were not slain by these plagues, did not do penance from the works of their hands, that they should not adore devils and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and wood, which neither can see nor hear nor walk:

¹⁴ And he seduced them that dwell on the earth, for the signs which were given him to do in the sight of the beast: saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make the image of the beast which had the wound by the sword and lived. ¹⁵ And it was given him to give life to the image of the beast: and that the image of the beast should speak: and should cause that whosoever will not adore the image of the beast should be slain.

⁹ And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice: If any man shall adore the beast and his image and receive his character in his forehead or in his hand, ¹⁰ He also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mingled with pure wine in the cup of his wrath: and shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the sight of the holy angels and in the sight of the Lamb. ¹¹ And the smoke of their torments, shall ascend up for ever and ever: neither have they rest day nor night, who have adored the beast and his image and whoever receiveth the character of his name.

² And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth. And there fell a sore and grievous wound upon men who had the character of the beast: and upon them that adored the image thereof.
