¹ The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach,

²³ And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom: and healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity, among the people. ²⁴ And his fame went throughout all Syria, and they presented to him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and such as were possessed by devils, and lunatics, and those that had the palsy, and he cured them:

⁵ The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

³ It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

²⁴ And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived and hid herself five months, saying:

²³ And Jesus himself was beginning about the age of thirty years: being (as it was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was of Heli, who was of Mathat,

²¹ (And in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases and hurts and evil spirits: and to many that were blind he gave sight.) ²² And answering, he said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, to the poor the gospel is preached. ²³ And blessed is he whosoever shall not be scandalized in me.

¹⁹ To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people.

³² Jesus answered them: Many good works I have shewed you from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me? ³³ The Jews answered him: For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy: and because that thou. being a, man, makest thyself God. ³⁴ Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your law: I said, you are gods? ³⁵ If he called them gods to whom the word of God was spoken; and the scripture cannot be broken: ³⁶ Do you say of him whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world: Thou blasphemest; because I said: I am the Son of God? ³⁷ If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. ³⁸ But if I do, though you will not believe me, believe the works: that you may know and believe that the Father is in me and I in the Father.

¹⁹ The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine. ²⁰ Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort: and in secret I have spoken nothing. ²¹ Why askest thou me? Ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them. Behold they know what things I have said.

²² Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him, in the midst of you, as you also know:

²¹ For unto this are you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow his steps. ²² Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. ²³ Who, when he was reviled, did not revile: when he suffered, he threatened not, but delivered himself to him that judged him unjustly.
