The beds also were of gold and silver, placed in order upon a floor paved with porphyry and white marble: which was embellished with painting of wonderful variety. ⁷ And they that were invited, drank in golden cups, and the meats were brought in divers vessels one after another. Wine also in abundance and of the best was presented, as was worthy of a king's magnificence.

⁵ Acceptable is the man that sheweth mercy and lendeth: he shall order his words with judgment:

¹ Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith, shall not be wise.

²⁹ Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink off their cups. ³¹ Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly, ³² But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk. ³³ Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ And thou shalt be as one sleeping in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot fast asleep when the stern is lost. ³⁵ And thou shalt say: They have beaten me, but I was not sensible of pain: they drew me, and I felt not: when shall I awake and find wine again?

² Laughter I counted error: and to mirth I said: Why art thou vainly deceived? ³ I thought in my heart, to withdraw my flesh from wine, that I might turn my mind to wisdom, and might avoid folly, till I might see what was profitable for the children of men: and what they ought to do under the sun, all the days of their life.

¹⁹ For laughter they make bread, and wine that the living may feast: and all things obey money.

¹¹ Woe to you that rise up early in the morning to follow drunkenness, and to drink in the evening, to be inflamed with wine.

³ The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet.

⁷ But these also have been ignorant through wine, and through drunkenness have erred: the priest and the prophet have been ignorant through drunkenness, they are swallowed up with wine, they have gone astray in drunkenness, they have not known him that seeth, they have been ignorant of judgment. ⁸ For all the tables were full of vomit and filth, so that there was no more place.

¹¹ Fornication, and wine, and drunkenness, take away the understanding.

¹⁰ For as thorns embrace one another: so while they are feasting and drinking together, they shall be consumed as stubble that is fully dry.

¹⁵ Woe to him that giveth drink to his friend, and presenteth his gall, and maketh him drunk, that he may behold his nakedness. ¹⁶ Thou art filled with shame instead of glory: drink thou also, and fall fast asleep: the cup of the right hand of the Lord shall compass thee, and shameful vomiting shall be on thy glory.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest perhaps your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and the cares of this life: and that day come upon you suddenly.

¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy.

¹⁴ Wherefore he saith: Rise, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead: and Christ shall enlighten thee.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury: but be ye filled with the Holy Spirit,

⁷ For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunk, are drunk in the night. ⁸ But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having on the breast plate of faith and charity and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
