¹ In the days of the judges, when the judges ruled, there came a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem Juda, went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. ² He was named Elimelech, and his wife Noemi: and his two sons, the one Mahalon, and the other Chelion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Juda. And she kissed them. And they lifted up their voice, and began to weep, ¹⁰ And to say: We will go on with thee to thy people. ¹¹ But she answered them: Return, my daughters: why come ye with me? have I any more sons in my womb, that you may hope for husbands of me? ¹² Return again, my daughters, and go your ways: for I am now spent with age, and not fit for wedlock. Although I might conceive this night, and bear children, ¹³ If you would wait till they were grown up, and come to man's estate, you would be old women before you marry. Do not so, my daughters, I beseech you: for I am grieved the more for your distress, and the hand of the Lord is gone out against me. ¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice, and began to weep again: Orpha kissed her mother in law, and returned: Ruth stuck close to her mother in law. ¹⁵ And Noemi said to her: Behold thy kinswoman is returned to her people, and to her gods, go thou with her. ¹⁶ She answered: Be not against me, to desire that I should leave thee and depart: for whithersoever thou shalt go, I will go: and where thou shalt dwell, I also will dwell. Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. ¹⁷ The land that shall receive thee dying, in the same will I die: and there will I be buried. The Lord do so and so to me, and add more also, if aught but death part me and thee. ¹⁸ Then Noemi seeing that Ruth was steadfastly determined to go with her, would not be against it, nor persuade her any more to return to her friends: ¹⁹ So they went together, and came to Bethlehem. And when they were come into the city, the report was quickly spread among all: and the women said: This is that Noemi. ²⁰ But she said to them: Call me not Noemi (that is, beautiful,) but call me Mara (that is, bitter), for the Almighty hath quite filled me with bitterness. ²¹ I went out full and the Lord hath brought me back empty. Why then do you call me Noemi, whom the Lord hath humbled, and the Almighty hath afflicted? ²² So Noemi came with Ruth, the Moabitess, her daughter in law, from the land of her sojournment: and returned into Bethlehem, in the beginning of the barley harvest.

¹⁰ And there came a famine in the country: and Abram went down into Egypt, to sojourn there: for the famine was very grievous in the land.

²³ So she kept close to the maids of Booz: and continued to glean with them, till all the barley and the wheat were laid up in the barns.

¹ After she was returned to her mother in law, Noemi said to her: My daughter, I will seek rest for thee, and will provide that it may be well with thee.

¹ Now a certain woman of the wives of the prophets, cried to Eliseus, saying: Thy servant, my husband, is dead, and thou knowest that thy servant was one that feared God, and behold the creditor is come to take away my two sons to serve him.

³¹ And the king said: May God do so and so to me, and may he add more, if the head of Eliseus, the son of Saphat, shall stand on him this day.

¹ And Eliseus spoke to the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying: Arise, and go thou, and thy household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst find: for the Lord hath called a famine, and it shall come upon the land seven years. ² And she arose, and did according to the word of the man of God: and going with her household, she sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days. ³ And when the seven years were ended, the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines, and she went forth to speak to the king for her house and for her lands.

²¹ And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord, so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.

⁷ Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly?

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and wilt consume me for the sins of my youth.

^{8 (16:9)} My wrinkles bear witness against me, and a false speaker riseth up against my face, contradicting me.

⁶ At least now understand, that God hath not afflicted me with an equal judgment, and compassed me with his scourges.

³ To the saints, who are in his land, he hath made wonderful all my desires in them.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I am turned in my anguish, whilst the thorn is fastened.

¹⁶ And he called a famine upon the land: and he broke in pieces all the support of bread.

³⁴ A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

⁵ He hath given food to them that fear him. He will be mindful for ever of his covenant:

⁶³ I am a partaker with all them that fear thee, and that keep thy commandments.

⁵ But such as turn aside into bonds, the Lord shall lead out with the workers of iniquity: peace upon Israel.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life:

¹ Her time is near at hand, and her days shall not be prolonged. For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose out of Israel, and will make them rest upon their own ground: and the stranger shall be joined with them, and shall adhere to the house of Jacob.

⁷ Is not this your city, which gloried from of old in her antiquity? her feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn.

¹³ I hoped till morning, as a lion so hath he broken all my bones: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me.
