¹ Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him. ² Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God: and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know that when he shall appear we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is. ³ And every one that hath this hope in him sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy. ⁴ Whosoever committeth sin committeth also iniquity. And sin is iniquity. ⁵ And you know that he appeared to take away our sins: and in him there is no sin. ⁶ Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: and whosoever sinneth hath not seen him nor known him. ⁷ Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just. ⁸ He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother's just. ¹³ Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you. ¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not abideth in death. ¹⁵ Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself. ¹⁶ In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ He that hath the substance of this world and shall see his brother in need and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him? ¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth. ¹⁹ In this we know that we are of the truth and in his sight shall persuade our hearts. ²⁰ For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart and knoweth all things. ²¹ Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God. ²² And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments and do those things which are pleasing in his sight. ²³ And this is his commandment: That we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us. ²⁴ And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us.

And he answered: I know not: am I my brother's keeper? ¹⁰ And he said to him: What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the earth. ¹¹ Now therefore cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and recieved the blood of thy brother at thy hand. ¹² When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth. ¹³ And Cain said to the Lord: My iniquity is greater than that I may deserve pardon. ¹⁴ Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and from thy face I shall be hid, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: every one therefore that findeth me, shall kill me. ¹⁵ And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not so be: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.

²⁵ Adam also knew his wife again: and she brought forth a son, and called his name Seth, saying: God hath given me another seed for Abel, whom Cain slew.

⁴¹ Esau therefore always hated Jacob, for the blessing wherewith his father had blessed him; and he said in his heart: The days will come of the mourning for my father, and I will kill my brother Jacob.

²¹ And again he said: Behold there is a place with me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock.

¹⁶ Thou shalt not be a detractor nor a whisperer among the people. Thou shalt not stand against the blood of thy neighbour. I am the Lord. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: But reprove him openly, lest thou incur sin through him. ¹⁸ Seek not revenge, nor be mindful of the injury of thy citizens. ³¹ For he hath contemned the word of the Lord, and made void his precept: therefore shall he be destroyed, and shall bear his iniquity.

⁷ If one of thy brethren that dewlleth within thy gates of thy city in the land which the Lord thy God will give thee, come to poverty: thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor close thy hand, ⁸ But shalt open it to the poor man, thou shalt lend him, that which thou perceivest he hath need of. ⁹ Beware lest perhaps a wicked thought steal in upon thee, and thou say in thy heart: The seventh year of remission draweth nigh; and thou turn away thy eyes from thy poor brother, denying to lend him that which he asketh: lest he cry against thee to the Lord, and it become a sin unto thee. ¹⁰ But thou shalt give to him: neither shalt thou do any thing craftily in relieving his necessities: that the Lord thy God may bless thee at all times, and in all things to which thou shalt put thy hand. ¹¹ There will not be wanting poor in the land of thy habitation: therefore I command thee to open thy hand to thy needy and poor brother, that liveth in the land.

¹⁵ The Lord thy God will raise up to thee a PROPHET of thy nation and of thy brethren like unto me: him thou shalt hear: ¹⁶ As thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the assembly was gathered together, and saidst: Let me not hear any more the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see any more this exceeding great fire, lest I die. ¹⁷ And the Lord said to me: They have spoken all things well. ¹⁸ I will raise them up a prophet out of the midst of their brethren like to thee: and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. ¹⁹ And he that will not hear his words, which he shall speak in my name, I will be the revenger.

⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. ⁸ For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.

¹⁸ A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit.

Or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? ¹² Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion? ¹³ If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him?

⁵¹ From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea I say to you: It shall be required of this generation.

²⁴ Because this my son was dead and is come to life again, was lost and is found. And they began to be merry.

²⁴ Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ Whom God hath proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his justice, for the remission of former sins, ²⁶ Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his justice in this time: that he himself may be just and the justifier of him who is of the faith of Jesus Christ

¹⁵ For the law worketh wrath. For where there is no law, neither is there transgression.

² God forbid! For we that are dead to sin, how shall we live any longer therein?

¹⁶ Know you not that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants you are whom you obey, whether it be of sin unto death or of obedience unto justice. ¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that you were the servants of sin but have obeyed from the heart unto that form of doctrine into which you have been delivered. ¹⁸ Being then freed from sin, we have been made servants of justice.

God forbid! But sin, that it may appear sin, by that which is good, wrought death in me: that sin, by the commandment, might become sinful above measure.

⁷ Because the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God. For it is not subject to the law of God: neither can it be.

⁹ But you are not in the flesh, but the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. ²¹ Lest again, when I come, God humble me among you: and I mourn many of them that sinned before and have not done penance for the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness that they have committed.

¹² For which cause, I also suffer these things: but I am not ashamed. For I know whom I have believed and I am certain that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him, against that day.
