⁹ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet:

¹³ For all the prophets and the law have prophesied unto John. ¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, who is to come.

⁵ And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.

¹² But I say unto you that Elias has already come, and they have not known him, but have done unto him whatever they would. Thus also the Son of man is about to suffer from them. ¹³ Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the baptist.

²⁴ And Jesus answering said to them, *I* also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, *I* also will tell you by what authority I do these things: ²⁵ The baptism of John, whence was it? of heaven or of men? And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say to us, Why then have ye not believed him? ²⁶ but if we should say, Of men, we fear the crowd, for all hold John for a prophet.

¹¹ And they asked him saying, Why do the scribes say that Elias must first have come? ¹² And he answering said to them, Elias indeed, having first come, restores all things; and how is it written of the Son of man that he must suffer much, and be set at nought: ¹³ but I say unto you that Elias also is come, and they have done to him whatever they would, as it is written of him.

¹⁵ For he shall be great before [the] Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with [the] Holy Spirit, even from his mother`s womb. ¹⁶ And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to [the] Lord their God. ¹⁷ And *he* shall go before him in [the] spirit and power of Elias, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to [the] thoughts of just [men], to make ready for [the] Lord a prepared people.

⁷⁶ And *thou*, child, shalt be called [the] prophet of [the] Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of [the] Lord to make ready his ways;
