For you pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! ²⁵ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. ²⁹ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' ³¹ Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt. ³³ You serpents! You brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? ³⁴ Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, ³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation. ³⁷ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! ³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate. ³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

¹⁰ And he called the people to him and said to them, "Hear and understand: ¹¹ not what goes into the mouth defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." ¹² Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" ¹³ He answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. ¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit." ¹⁵ But Peter said to him, "Explain the parable to us." ¹⁶ So Jesus said, "Are you also still without understanding? ¹⁷ Do you not yet see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? ¹⁸ But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. ¹⁹ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornications, theft, false witness, slander. ²⁰ These are what defile a man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."

¹⁴ And he called all the people to him again, and said to them, "Hear me, everyone, and understand:

³⁸ And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places ³⁹ and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,

¹ In the meantime, when so many thousands of the multitude had gathered together that they trampled one another, he began to say to his disciples first of all, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

⁵⁷ "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?

⁴⁵ And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples, ⁴⁶ "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,

Thus you have made the word of God of no effect for the sake of your tradition. ⁷ You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, when he said: ⁸ 'These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁹ In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'"

³⁰ Then he went to the second and said the same thing. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go.

²⁹ But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.

¹⁹ and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth ²¹ you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? ²² You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? ²³ You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? ²⁴ For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

¹ Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God.

⁵ holding a form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid such people.

¹⁶ They profess to know God, but they deny him by their deeds; they are detestable and disobedient, unfit for any good deed.

²⁸ Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

²³ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

⁴⁶ And he said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

¹⁰ Now therefore why do you test God by putting upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

²⁸ For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials:

¹³ For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh.

²⁴ But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I will not lay upon you any other burden;

¹ "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. ² "Thus, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ³ But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ⁵ "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But when you pray, go into your room, shut the door and pray to your Father, who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. ⁷ And when you pray, do not use empty repetitions as the Gentiles do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. ⁸ Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ⁹ Pray, then, in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. ¹⁰ Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.' ¹⁴ For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. ¹⁶ "And when you fast, do not look gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

²⁰ And behold, a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment.

¹⁵ He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

⁴⁷ who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation."

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

¹⁸ He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.

⁴³ for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

¹⁵ Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will.

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. ⁴ who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe to you! For you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it." ⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, by saying these things you reproach us also." ⁴⁶ And he said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So you witness that you approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering." ⁵³ As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ lying in wait for him, to catch at something he might say.

⁷ So he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noted how they chose the places of honor, saying to them: ⁸ "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest one more distinguished than you be invited by him; ⁹ and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. ¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁴⁶ "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, ⁴⁷ who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation."

¹⁰ Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; outdo one another in showing honor.

¹ My brethren, show no favoritism as you hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. ² For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in shabby clothes, ³ and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here in a good place," and you say to the poor man, "You stand there," or, "Sit by my feet," ⁴ have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

⁹ I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.

⁸ But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master, and you are all brethren.

⁵ And Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. And let us make three tabernaclesone for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

⁵¹ And Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" And the blind man said to him, "Master, let me receive my sight."

³⁸ Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

² This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."

²⁶ And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified behold, he is baptizing, and all are going to him."

²⁵ When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher).

²⁵ It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!

⁵ While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

¹⁰ Nor are you to be called 'Teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.

¹³ You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

⁹ For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. ¹⁰ Why do you judge your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.

¹² What I mean is this, that each one of you says, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." ¹³ Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

³ for you are still carnal. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not carnal, and are you not walking like mere men? ⁴ For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not mere men? ⁵ What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord assigned to each one.

²⁴ Not that we lord it over your faith; but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.

⁵ For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.

¹⁵ from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,

¹ Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, ² to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: grace to you and peace from God our Father.

¹ Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

³ not as lording it over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.

⁹ I, John, your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

¹⁰ Then I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

⁹ But he said to me, "Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God."

⁸ Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ⁹ Pray, then, in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

³² For the Gentiles seek after all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

¹¹ If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

¹ "Brethren and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you."

¹⁴ For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. ¹⁵ For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." ¹⁶ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷ and if children, then heirsheirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, in order that we may also be glorified with him.

¹⁵ For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

¹⁸ And I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

¹ Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, ² older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, in all purity.

⁹ Besides this, we have had fathers of our flesh to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

¹ See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God! And so we are! The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

²⁶ Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you must be your servant. ²⁷ And whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave

⁴³ But it shall not be so among you. But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be first among you must be slave of all.

²⁶ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the youngest, and he who leads as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as One who serves.

¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

¹⁹ For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more.

²³ Are they servants of Christ? I am a better oneI am talking like a madmanin far more labors, in far more imprisonments, with more beatings, and often in danger of death.

¹³ For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

⁵ Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, ⁶ who, though he was in the form of God, did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, ⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. ⁸ And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to deatheven death on a cross.

³ "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁴ Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

⁵¹ He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

⁵ Likewise you that are younger men be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

⁴⁶ The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" ⁴⁷ The Pharisees answered them, "Are you deceived, you also? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed." ⁵⁰ Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, said to them, ⁵¹ "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he is doing?" ⁵² They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Search and look, and you will find that no prophet is to rise out of Galilee."

²² His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that he was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

²⁴ So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory; we know that this man is a sinner."

³⁴ They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and are you teaching us?" And they cast him out.

¹⁷ But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any one in this name." ¹⁸ Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

²⁸ saying, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."

⁴⁰ So they took his advice, and they called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

¹ Saul was consenting to his death. And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

⁸ But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men, ¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last.

⁸ Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith.

¹⁵ Be on guard against him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message.

²⁴ But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you."

³³ You serpents! You brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? ³⁴ Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, ³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation.

⁴⁰ who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

⁴⁸ But he who did not know, and committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask the more.

⁶ For among them are those who make their way into households and capture weak women, weighed down with sins and swayed by various impulses,

¹⁰ For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision. ¹¹ They must be silenced, because they are upsetting whole families by teaching things they ought not to teach for the sake of sordid gain.

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

¹⁴ They have eyes full of adultery, that never cease from sin; they entice unstable souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! ¹⁵ Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

²² But I say to you that anyone who is angry with his brother shall be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be answerable to the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of hell.

²⁹ If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and you want to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

⁵ And the statement pleased the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.

¹⁰ and said, "You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not stop making crooked the straight ways of the Lord?

⁴³ When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.

² But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren.

¹⁹ But Jews came there from Antioch and Iconium; and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

⁵ But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men from the market place, they formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; they attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the people. ⁶ When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brethren before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,

¹³ But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.

¹⁷ They seek you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, so that you may seek them.

¹² Those who want to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

³ Among them we all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and mind, and so we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

³³ "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' ³⁴ But I say to you, do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; ³⁵ or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

⁵ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might have received from me is a gift to God' ⁶ he is not to honor his father with it. Thus you have made the word of God of no effect for the sake of your tradition.

¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?

¹⁹ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

¹⁰ For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.' ¹¹ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), ¹² then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother, ¹³ thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do."

³⁹ Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind." ⁴⁰ Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to him, "Are we blind also?" ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

³ I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law.

¹² But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.

²² in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

⁹ For in him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

³⁴ But I say to you, do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;

⁴⁹ 'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?

² At once I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, with one sitting on the throne. ³ And he who sat there was like jasper and carnelian in appearance, and round the throne was a rainbow that looked like an emerald.

¹⁹ Whoever then breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

¹³ But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

⁷ And if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.

³⁷ Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' ³⁸ This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

⁴² But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

¹² I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.'

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

⁴ Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is a plank in your own eye?

² "Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat." ³ He answered them, "And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.'

²⁴ Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

¹⁶ "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'

⁶ But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are the money of blood." ⁷ So they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. ⁸ Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

⁷ The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. ⁸ But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Rise and stand here." And he rose and stood there. ⁹ Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" ¹⁰ And he looked around at them all, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was restored.

²⁸ Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they did not enter the Praetorium themselves, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

⁴⁰ Then they all cried again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.

⁴ When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash themselves. And there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pitchers and copper vessels.) ⁵ The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with impure hands?" ⁶ And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites; as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁷ In vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.' ⁸ You let go of the commandment of God, and hold on to the tradition of men." ⁹ And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition!

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You foolish ones! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

³³ "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

¹ Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

²² let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

⁸ Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

⁴⁴ Woe to you! For you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it."

³ Then Paul said to him, "God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?"

³⁴ You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

⁵ But they do all their works to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and the tassels of their garments long.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, come evil thoughts, fornications, theft, murder, adultery, ²² coveting, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."

¹² For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ¹³ And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So you witness that you approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs.

²⁹ "Brethren, I may say to you confidently of the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

³⁵ And the tenants took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did the same to them.

²² He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. You are doing just as your fathers did. ⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

³⁴ You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

³⁴ When the harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit. ³⁵ And the tenants took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.

⁷ Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

³ But I am afraid that just as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him,

²⁹ How much severer punishment do you think a man will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as an unclean thing the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?

⁹ And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole worldhe was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

¹⁶ "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. ¹⁷ But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and flog you in their synagogues.

²³ When they persecute you in one city, flee to another. For truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

⁵² And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been instructed for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old."

¹⁹ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

⁴⁹ Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

² They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

²¹ Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you."

⁸ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth."

⁵⁸ Then they cast him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

¹ Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, ² and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

²⁷ Now at this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

² He had James the brother of John put to death with the sword.

¹ Now in the church that was at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

³² And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged the brethren with many words and strengthened them.

¹⁹ And I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in you. ²⁰ When the blood of Stephen your witness was shed, I also was standing by and approving, and keeping the garments of those who were killing him.'

⁶ Yet we do speak a wisdom among the mature, a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away.

¹⁰ According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it.

³ Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. ⁴ Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵ And there are varieties of service, but the same Lord. ⁶ There are varieties of working, but the same God who works all of them in all men. ⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ and to another the working of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another distinguishing between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as he wills.

²⁴ Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the open sea.

⁸ Therefore it says, "When he ascended on high, he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." ⁹ (In saying, "He ascended," what does it mean except that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ He who descended is also he who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) ¹¹ And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, ¹² to equip the saints for the work of service, for the building up of the body of Christ;

²⁸ We proclaim him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.

³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

¹⁰ And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.

⁴ By faith Abel offered God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his gifts. And through faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

²⁴ and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks better than the blood of Abel.

¹¹ For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, ¹² and not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous.

²⁴ And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on the earth."

³⁴ Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away till all these things take place.

³⁰ Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away before all these things take place. ³¹ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

¹² Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

³ and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; but they were not willing to come.

⁶ And the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.

³⁰ And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

³ And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. ⁴ Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. ⁵ And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed. ⁶ He still had one left to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

³⁴ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! ³⁵ Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

¹⁷ And at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come, for all is now ready.' ¹⁸ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to have me excused.' ¹⁹ And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.' ²⁰ Still another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'

²⁸ But he was angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.

¹⁴ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' ¹⁵ And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading. ¹⁶ Then came the first, saying, ' Master, your mina has earned ten minas more.' ¹⁷ And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, be in authority over ten cities.' ¹⁸ And the second came, saying, 'Master, your mina has earned five minas.' ¹⁹ Likewise he said to him, 'You also be over five cities.' ²⁰ Then another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I have kept laid away in a handkerchief; ²¹ for I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' ²² He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? ²³ Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' ²⁴ And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.' ²⁵ And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already!' ²⁶ 'I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. ²⁷ But those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'" ²⁸ When he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. ²⁹ When he came near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, ³⁰ saying, "Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. ³¹ If any one asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you shall say to him, 'The Lord has need of it.'" ³² So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. ³³ And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" ³⁴ And they said, "The Lord has need of it." ³⁵ And they brought it to Jesus, and they threw their garments on the colt and set Jesus on it. ³⁶ And as he went along, many spread their garments on the road. ³⁷ And, as he was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, ³⁸ saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" ³⁹ And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples." ⁴⁰ He answered, "I tell you, if these keep silent, the stones would cry out." ⁴¹ And when he drew near and saw the city he wept over it, ⁴² saying, "If you had known, even you, this day, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, ⁴⁴ and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation."

¹¹ He sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. ¹² He sent a third; and they wounded him and cast him out. ¹³ Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.' ¹⁴ But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. ¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men,

⁷ When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill them. ⁸ And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

⁶ And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered greatly.

² But he answered them, "You see all these things, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down."

¹⁴ "When you see 'the abomination of desolation' standing where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

³⁵ Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

⁶ "As for these things which you see, the days will come when there shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."

²⁰ "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.

²⁴ They will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive to all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

¹³ They put forward false witnesses who said, "This man never stops speaking against this holy place, and the law; ¹⁴ for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses handed down to us."

⁹ The crowds that went before him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

²⁶ And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. ²⁷ So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, ²⁸ he took him up in his arms and blessed God, and said: ²⁹ "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; ³⁰ for my eyes have seen your salvation

²² All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." ²³ Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see what you see.

²² Then he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

²¹ Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come."

²⁴ Therefore I told to you that you would die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

⁵⁶ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad."

⁹ Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

¹⁹ A little while longer, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

²⁵ I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

¹⁴ But their minds were hardened; for to this day, when they read the old covenant, the same veil remains unlifted, because only in Christ is it removed. ¹⁵ Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts. ¹⁶ But whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. ¹⁷ Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. ¹⁸ And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
