¹³ Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

²³ When they persecute you in one city, flee to another. For truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

¹⁵ Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all,

¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, ² and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has risen from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."

³² Now Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have been with me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way." ³³ Then his disciples said to him, "Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to feed such a great crowd?" ³⁴ And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish." ³⁵ He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. ³⁶ Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. ³⁷ And they all ate and were satisfied; and they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over. ³⁸ Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

³⁰ The apostles gathered to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. ³¹ And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest a while." For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. ³² So they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves. ³³ But many saw them going, and knew them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns, and got there ahead of them. ³⁴ When Jesus went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things. ³⁵ When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. ³⁶ Send them away, so they can go to the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves something to eat." ³⁷ But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said to him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?" ³⁸ But he said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they found out they said, "Five, and two fish." ³⁹ Then he commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. ⁴⁰ So they sat down in groups, of hundreds and fifties. ⁴¹ And taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. ⁴² And they all ate and were satisfied. ⁴³ And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. ⁴⁴ Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.

¹⁰ And when the apostles returned, they told him what they had done. Then he took them with him and withdrew apart to a city called Bethsaida. ¹¹ But when the crowds learned it, they followed him; and he welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. ¹² Now the day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, "Send the crowd away, to go to the surrounding villages and country, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place." ¹³ But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." And they said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fishunless we go and buy food for all these people." ¹⁴ For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each." ¹⁵ And they did so, and made them all sit down. ¹⁶ Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. ¹⁷ They all ate and were satisfied, and they took up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.

¹ After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. ² And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he performed on those who were diseased. ³ Jesus went up on the mountain, and there sat down with his disciples. ⁴ Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. ⁵ Then Jesus lifted up his eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread, that these people may eat?" ⁶ But this he said to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. ⁷ Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each one of them to have a little." ⁸ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, ⁹ "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?" ¹⁰ Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place; so the men sat down, in number about five thousand. ¹¹ Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. ¹² And when they had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." ¹³ So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, left over by those who had eaten. ¹⁴ When the people saw the sign that Jesus did, they said, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." ¹⁵ Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
