¹ Then he began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to vine dressers and went into a far country.

¹⁰ The disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" ¹¹ And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. ¹² For whoever has, to him will more be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. ¹³ This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. ¹⁴ In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand; and seeing you will see and not perceive. ¹⁵ For this people's heart has grown dull. And their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and they understand with their hearts, and turn so that I should heal them.'

³⁴ All these things Jesus spoke to the crowd in parables; and without a parable he did not speak to them. ³⁵ So was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world."

²⁸ "What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'

¹⁴ "For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.

² Then he taught them many things by parables, and said to them in his teaching:

¹¹ And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything is in parables; ¹² so that 'seeing they may see but not perceive, and hearing may hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven.'" ¹³ And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

³³ With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. ³⁴ But without a parable he did not speak to them. And when they were alone, he explained everything to his own disciples.

And he leased it to vine dressers and went into a far country. ² At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants, to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. ³ And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. ⁴ Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. ⁵ And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed. ⁶ He still had one left to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last, saying, 'They will respect my son.' ⁷ But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' ⁸ So they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others. ¹⁰ Have you not read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone; ¹¹ this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?" ¹² And they sought to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they knew he had spoken the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

³⁴ It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.

¹⁰ he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others it is given in parables, so that 'Seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.'

⁶ He told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. ⁷ So he said to the keeper of his vineyard, 'Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why should it use up the ground?' ⁸ And he answered him, 'Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. ⁹ And if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, you can cut it down.'"

¹³ Not many days after, the younger son gathered together all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.

¹² Therefore he said: "A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.

⁹ Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to vine-dressers, and went into another country for a long time. ¹⁰ At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants, that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ¹¹ He sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. ¹² He sent a third; and they wounded him and cast him out. ¹³ Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.' ¹⁴ But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' ¹⁵ So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "May this never be!" ¹⁷ But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone'? ¹⁸ Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder." ¹⁹ The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the peoplefor they knew that he had spoken this parable against them.

⁹ They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"

¹ "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. ² Every branch in me that bears no fruit he takes away; and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it may bear more fruit. ³ You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. ⁴ Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If anyone does not abide in me, he is like a branch that is cast away and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. ⁷ If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. ⁸ By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.

³⁸ This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to pass on to us.

⁴⁶ who found favor in God's sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. ⁴⁷ But it was Solomon who built a house for him.

¹ Then what advantage has the Jew, or what is the value of circumcision? ² Much in every way! To begin with, they are entrusted with the oracles of God.

⁴ They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. ⁵ Of them are the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, forever blessed. Amen.

¹⁷ And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the rest to share the root of the olive tree, ¹⁸ do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. ¹⁹ You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." ²⁰ That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast only by faith. So do not be proud, but stand in awe. ²¹ For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. ²² Therefore consider the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. ²³ And they also, if they do not persist in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. ²⁴ For if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and were grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree!
