² And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king."

²⁷ Nevertheless, so that we may not offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you open its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for me and you."

²¹ They said, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, ⁶⁰ but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward

¹⁷ Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at him.

⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. ⁵⁶ For many bore false witness against him, but their testimonies did not agree.

⁶¹ But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" ⁶² And Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

³ And the chief priests accused him of many things. ⁴ And Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer to make? See how many things they bring against you." ⁵ But Jesus still made no answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

²⁰ So they watched him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might catch him on what he said, in order to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor. ²¹ And they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and you do not show partiality, but teach the way of God in truth. ²² Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" ²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, ²⁴ "Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." ²⁵ He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

⁶⁹ But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." ⁷⁰ They all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" He said to them, "You said what I am."

⁵ But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee to this place."

¹⁴ and said to them, "You have brought this man to me as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. And behold, having examined him in your presence, I have found no guilt in this man concerning those charges which you make against him;

³⁰ They answered him, "If he were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over to you."

³³ Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" ³⁴ Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own, or did others say it to you about me?" ³⁵ Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?" ³⁶ Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingship is not from here." ³⁷ Pilate said to him, "You are a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say what I ama king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice."

¹² From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Anyone who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar."

²⁰ and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, "These men are Jews and they are throwing our city into an uproar. ²¹ They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice."

⁶ When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brethren before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, ⁷ and Jason has welcomed them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus."

⁵ For we have found this man a pestilent fellow who stirs up dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

¹³ Neither can they prove to you the charges they are now making against me.

¹⁶ and keep a clear conscience, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. ¹⁷ For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God's will, than for doing wrong. ¹⁸ For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit;
