²⁴ A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be considered the greatest.

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to him with her sons and, kneeling down, asked something of him. ²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." ²³ He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." ²⁴ And when the ten heard it, they were indignant with the two brothers.

³⁴ But they kept silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest.

³⁷ And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and the other at your left, in your glory." ³⁸ But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" ³⁹ They said to him, "We are able." So Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; ⁴⁰ but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." ⁴¹ And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant with James and John.

⁴⁶ And an argument arose among them as to which of them would be the greatest.

¹⁰ Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; outdo one another in showing honor.

⁴ Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous or boastful, it is not arrogant

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. ⁴ Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. ⁵ Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says without reason: "He jealously desires the Spirit which he has made to dwell in us"? ⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

⁵ Likewise you that are younger men be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." ⁶ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.
