¹ Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. ² For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. ³ If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies. ⁴ Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. ⁵ So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the members of the body. The tongue corrupts our whole person, sets the whole course of our life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. ⁸ But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹ With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God. ¹⁰ From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so. ¹¹ Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? ¹² Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. ¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good life let him show his deeds in the humility of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

⁵ Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

²² But I say to you that anyone who is angry with his brother shall be subject to judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be answerable to the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of hell.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

¹ "Judge not, that you be not judged. ² For with the same judgment you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

⁸ But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master, and you are all brethren. ⁹ And do not call anyone on earth your 'Father,' for you have one Father, he who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Nor are you to be called 'Teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.

¹³ "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who would enter to go in.

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

⁷⁴ Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the rooster crowed.

¹ In the meantime, when so many thousands of the multitude had gathered together that they trampled one another, he began to say to his disciples first of all, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² There is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

⁴⁷ And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not ready himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. ⁴⁸ But he who did not know, and committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask the more.

² So he called him and said to him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.'

⁸ So the master commended the dishonest steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.

²⁴ And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.'

¹⁴ But before very long there rushed down from the land a violent wind, called the northeaster; ¹⁵ and when the ship was caught in it and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along. ¹⁶ And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were scarcely able to secure the boat. ¹⁷ After they had hoisted it up, they used supporting cables to undergird the ship; and fearing that they might run aground on the shallows of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and in this way let themselves be driven along. ¹⁸ The next day as we were being violently storm-tossed, they began to throw the cargo overboard; ¹⁹ and on the third day they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands. ²⁰ When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was raging on us, all hope of our being saved was finally abandoned. ²¹ When they had gone a long time without food, then Paul stood up among them and said, "Men, you should have followed my advice and not to have set sail from Crete and incurred this damage and loss. ²² Yet now I urge you to keep up your courage; for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. ²³ For this very night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood before me, ²⁴ and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.' ²⁵ So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen exactly as I have been told. ²⁶ But we must run aground on some island." ²⁷ But when the fourteenth night came, as we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors began to sense that they were approaching land. ²⁸ They took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and a little farther on they took soundings again and found it to be fifteen fathoms. ²⁹ Fearing that we might run aground somewhere on the rocks, they cast four anchors from the stern and prayed for daybreak. ³⁰ But as the sailors were trying to escape from the ship and had let down the lifeboat into the sea, on the pretense of laying out anchors from the bow, ³¹ Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved." ³² Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the lifeboat and let it fall away. ³³ As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been in suspense and without food, having taken nothing. ³⁴ Therefore I urge you to take some food; it will give you strength, since not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you." ³⁵ Having said this, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it and began to eat. ³⁶ Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves. ³⁷ All of us in the ship were two hundred and seventy-six persons. ³⁸ When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by throwing out the wheat into the sea.

²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

²⁹ They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, depravity. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,

⁸ but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury.

¹⁷ But if you call yourself a Jew, and rely on the law and boast of your relation to God

²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth ²¹ you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

²³ You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? ²⁴ For, as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you." ²⁵ Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. ²⁶ So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? ²⁷ The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a breaker of the law. ²⁸ For he is not a real Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something outward and in the flesh. ²⁹ He is a Jew who is one inwardly; and real circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, and not by the written code. His praise is not from men but from God.

¹⁰ As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one;

²¹ So I find it to be a law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.

¹⁹ For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the cleverness of the clever I will frustrate." ²⁰ Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong,

⁶ Yet we do speak a wisdom among the mature, a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away. ⁷ But we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and which God destined for our glory before the ages.

¹⁴ But the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

³ for you are still carnal. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not carnal, and are you not walking like mere men?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness";

² Moreover it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. ³ But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by any human court; I do not even judge myself. ⁴ I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not acquitted by this. It is the Lord who judges me. ⁵ Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts. Then every man will receive his praise from God.

⁷ For who regards you as different? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? ⁸ You are already filled! You have already become rich! You have become kings without us! And indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you.

² And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to have mourned? Let the one who has done this be removed from your midst.

⁶ Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?

⁵ I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between his brethren,

²⁷ But I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

⁷ For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.

²⁹ For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. ³⁰ That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. ³¹ But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

⁸ To one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

²⁸ And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then those having gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and those speaking in various kinds of tongues.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

²⁴ Therefore openly before the churches, show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our boasting about you.

³ But I am afraid that just as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

²⁰ For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you what I wish you to be, and you may not find me what you wish me to be; I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.

²² But the Scripture has bound everyone under sin, so that that what was promised by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

¹³ For those who are circumcised do not even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

² with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,

¹¹ And he gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,

³ But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. ⁴ And there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather let there be thanksgiving.

⁹ (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

¹¹ having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

²⁷ Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

¹⁹ Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

⁸ Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

¹⁰ so that you will live a life worthy of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

²⁸ We proclaim him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.

⁸ But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. ⁹ Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices

²¹ I charge you, in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, doing nothing out of favoritism.
