¹² Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

⁶ he is not to honor his father with it. Thus you have made the word of God of no effect for the sake of your tradition. ⁷ You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, when he said: ⁸ 'These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁹ In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'"

³⁰ and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

¹⁷ I urge you, brethren, to take note of those who cause divisions and difficulties, contrary to the doctrine which you have learned; avoid them.

¹⁷ For we are not, like so many, peddling the word of God; but as men of sincerity, as from God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

² But we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

⁸ See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to human tradition, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

¹⁸ Let no one disqualify you for the prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, puffed up without cause by his fleshly mind, ¹⁹ and not holding fast to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. ²⁰ If with Christ you died to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you still belonged to it, do you submit to regulations such as, ²¹ "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!" ²² (referring to things which are all destined perish with use), according to human commandments and teachings? ²³ These indeed have an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but they are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

¹ Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, ² through the pretensions of liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron, ³ who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

⁶ If you point out these things to the brethren, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the good doctrine which you have followed. ⁷ Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself in godliness.

³ If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching which accords with godliness,

¹⁶ Avoid godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, ¹⁷ and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, ¹⁸ who have gone astray from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and upset the faith of some.

²⁰ In a large house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware, and some for noble use, some for ignoble.

⁷ always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

¹³ while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires,

⁹ he must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to refute those who contradict it. ¹⁰ For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision. ¹¹ They must be silenced, because they are upsetting whole families by teaching things they ought not to teach for the sake of sordid gain.

⁹ But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and quarrels about the Law, for they are unprofitable and useless. ¹⁰ Warn a man who is factious once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him, ¹¹ knowing that such a man is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

⁹ Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.

⁷ so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

¹⁴ But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat food sacrificed to idols and to practice sexual immorality.

¹⁸ Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments to clothe you, and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

¹⁸ The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as clear as glass.
