¹ The whole congregation lifted up and gave forth their voice, and the people lamented through that night. ² All the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them:O that we had died in the land of Egypt or in this wilderness! O that we had died! ³ Why is Yahweh bringing us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones shall be taken as plunder. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt? ⁴ And they said each to his brother:Let us appoint a head, and let us return to Egypt. ⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel. ⁶ Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the explorers of the land, tore their garment. ⁷ and said to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, saying:The land through which we passed to explore it is a very, very good land. ⁸ If Yahweh delights in us then He will bring us into this land, and He will give it to us. It is a land which is gushing with milk and honey. ⁹ Only against Yahweh do not revolt, and you, do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread. Their protecting shadow has withdrawn from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Do not fear them. ¹⁰ Yet the whole congregation said to pelt them with stones. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared in a cloud on the tent of appointment to all the sons of Israel. ¹¹ Yahweh said to Moses:How long shall this people spurn Me? And how long shall they not believe in Me despite all the signs which I have done among them? ¹² I shall smite them with the plague and evict them, and I shall make you into a greater and more substantial nation than they. ¹³ Yet Moses said to Yahweh:The Egyptians have heard that You brought up this people by Your vigor, from among them;" ¹⁴ and they have spoken to the dwellers of this land; they have heard that You, Yahweh, are among this people, that You are being seen eye to eye, Yahweh, and Your cloud is standing over them, and in a column of cloud You are going before them by day and in a column of fire by night. ¹⁵ If You put this people to death as one man, then the nations who heard the report of You will say, saying. ¹⁶ Because Yahweh was unable to bring this people to the land about which He had sworn to them, He slew them in the wilderness. ¹⁷ So now let, I pray, the vigor of Yahweh be great just as You have spoken, saying. ¹⁸ Yahweh, slow to anger and with much kindness and truth, bearing with depravity and transgression and sin, yet He is not immediately making innocent in order to make innocent, but is visiting the depravity of the fathers on the sons, on the third and on the fourth generation. ¹⁹ Pardon, I pray, the depravity of this people according to the greatness of Your kindness just as You bore with this people from Egypt and hitherto. ²⁰ Yahweh said:I have pardoned them according to your word. ²¹ Howbeit, as I am the living One, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh, ²² all the men who were seeing My glory and My signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, who probed Me these ten times and they did not hearken to My voice, ²³ they assuredly shall not see the land about which I had sworn to their fathers! All who are spurning Me shall not see it. ²⁴ Yet My servant Caleb, inasmuch as there is another spirit with him and he is following fully after Me, I will bring him to the land where he will enter, and his seed shall prepare it for tenancy. ²⁵ Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite are dwelling in the vale, turn around tomorrow and journey; get yourself on to the wilderness, the Sea of Weeds road. ²⁶ Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying. ²⁷ How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, they who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel which they are grumbling against Me. ²⁸ Say to them:As I am the living One (this is the averring of Yahweh), just as you have spoken into My ears so shall I assuredly do to you. ²⁹ In this wilderness your corpses shall fall:all your mustered ones, all of your number, from twenty years old and upward, you who have murmured against Me, ³⁰ you yourselves shall assuredly not come into the land in which I lifted My hand to tabernacle you, none save Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. ³¹ As for your little ones of whom you have said:They shall be taken as plunder, I will also bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. ³² As for you, your corpses shall fall in this wilderness, ³³ and your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and they will bear your prostitutions until your corpses are spent in the wilderness. ³⁴ By the number of the days in which you explored the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, shall you bear your depravities:forty years; thus you will realize My repudiation. ³⁵ I, Yahweh, I have spoken. This assuredly shall I do to this whole evil congregation, those who are set against Me. In this wilderness shall they be spent, and there shall they die. ³⁶ The men whom Moses had sent to explore the land, who had returned and caused the whole congregation to grumble against him by bringing forth a disparaging muttering about the land, ³⁷ those men who were bringing forth evil mutterings of the land died by a stroke before Yahweh. ³⁸ As for Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, they remained alive of those men going to explore the land. ³⁹ Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly. ⁴⁰ They rose early in the morning and went up to the summit of the hill-country, saying:Behold us, now we will go up to the place of which Yahweh spoke, for we have sinned. ⁴¹ Moses said:Why is this? You are trespassing the bidding of Yahweh, so this shall not prosper. ⁴² Do not go up since Yahweh is not among you so that you not be stricken before your enemies. ⁴³ For the Amalekite and the Canaanite are there before you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following Yahweh, Yahweh shall not be with you. ⁴⁴ Yet they presumed to go up to the summit of the hill-country though the coffer of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, were not removed from within the camp. ⁴⁵ The Amalekite and the Canaanite, dwelling in that hill-country, descended, smote them and pounded them as far as Hormah.

⁸ Hence I have descended to rescue them from the hand of Egypt and to bring them up from that land to a land good and wide, to a land gushing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Hivite and the Jebusite.

³ Then they said: The Elohim of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us go, we pray, a way of three days into the wilderness, and let us sacrifice to Yahweh our Elohim, lest He come upon us with the plague or with the sword.

³ So Moses and Aaron entered to Pharaoh and said to him: Thus says Yahweh, Elohim of the Hebrews, How long will you refuse to be humbled because of My presence? Dismiss My people that they may serve Me!"

²¹ then Yahweh was going before them by day in a column of cloud to guide them along the way, and by night in a column of fire, to give light for them to go by day and night. ²² The column of cloud by day and the column of fire by night did not remove from the presence of the people.

⁷ And in the morning then you will see the glory of Yahweh since He heard your grumblings against Yahweh. What are we that you are grumbling against us?

¹⁰ And it came to be as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they turned around to the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Yahweh, it appeared in the cloud.

¹² I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them saying, Between the evening hours you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be satisfied with bread. Then you will realize that I am Yahweh your Elohim.

Why are you probing Yahweh? ³ When the people thirsted there for water, the people grumbled against Moses and said: Why is this that you brought us up from Egypt to put me and my sons and my cattle to death by thirst? ⁴ So Moses cried to Yahweh, saying: What shall I do for this people? A little further and they will stone me.

⁵ You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor be made to serve them, for I, Yahweh your Elohim, am a jealous El, visiting the depravity of the fathers on the sons, on the third and on the fourth generation, to those hating Me,

¹ The people saw that Moses was tardy to descend from the mountain. So the people assembled themselves against Aaron and said to him: Rise! Make for us elohim who shall go before us, for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him.

³² And now, if You should bear their sin, bear it. Yet if not, wipe me, I pray, from Your scroll which You have written.

¹¹ So Yahweh spoke to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his associate. When he returned to the camp then his minister, Joshua son of Nun, a youth, did not remove himself from the midst of the tent.

Is it not by Your going with us that we may be distinguished, I and Your people, from all the peoples who are on the surface of the ground? ¹⁷ Yahweh said to Moses: Moreover, this matter of which you have spoken I shall do, for you find grace in My eyes, and I know you by name.

⁶ Now Yahweh passed by before his face and called: Yahweh, Yahweh El, Who is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and with much kindness and truth, ⁷ preserving kindness to thousands, bearing with depravity, transgression and sin, yet He is not immediately making innocent in order to make innocent, but visiting the depravity of the fathers on the sons and on the sons' sons, on the third and on the fourth generation.

⁹ and said: I pray, if I find grace in Your eyes, my Lord, I pray, let my Lord go among us, for they are a stiff-necked people, and You will pardon our depravity and our sins, and You will gain us an allotment.

³⁴ and the cloud covered the tent of appointment, then the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle,

³⁸ for the cloud of Yahweh was over the tabernacle by day, and fire, it came to be in it by night for the eyes of all the house of Israel in all their journeyings.

²³ Now Moses and Aaron went into the tent of appointment; when they came forth, they blessed the people. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the people;" ²⁴ fire came forth from before Yahweh, and it devoured the ascent offering and the fat portions on the altar. When all the people saw it, they were jubilant and fell on their faces.

At the bidding of Yahweh they encamped, and at the bidding of Yahweh they journeyed. ²¹ Sometimes the cloud came to be only from evening until morning; when the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed. Whether by day or night, whenever the cloud was taken up then they journeyed.

³³ They journeyed from the mount of Yahweh a way of three days while the coffer of the covenant of Yahweh was journeying before them a way of three days to explore a resting place for them. ³⁴ And the cloud of Yahweh was over them by day on their journey from the camp.

And we became, in our own eyes, like grasshoppers; so we became in their eyes.

Then they fell on their faces. ⁴⁶ Moses said to Aaron:Take the fire-pan and put fire from the altar on it and place incense on it and go quickly to the congregation and make a propitiatory shelter over them, for wrath goes forth from before Yahweh! The stroke has started!" ⁴⁷ So Aaron took it, just as Moses had spoken, and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the stroke had started among the people. He put the incense on and make a propitiatory shelter over the people. ⁴⁸ He stood between the dead and the living, and the stroke was restrained. ⁴⁹ Now those dead by the stroke were fourteen thousand seven hundred, aside from those dead over the matter of Korah.

⁴ Have they no knowledge, all those contrivers of lawlessness, Who are devouring My people as they would devour bread? They do not call upon Yahweh."

⁴⁵ As to righteous men, they judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, And the judgment of women shedding blood, For they [are] adulteresses, And blood [is] in their hands." ⁴⁶ For thus said the Lord Yahweh:Bring up against them an assembly, And give them to trembling and to spoiling." ⁴⁷ And they have cast at them the stone of the assembly, And cut them with their swords, Their sons and their daughters they do slay, And their houses with fire they burn." ⁴⁸ And I have caused wickedness to cease from the land, And instructed have been all the women, And they do not according to your wickedness." ⁴⁹ And they have put your wickedness on you, And the sins of your idols you bear, And you have known that I [am] the Lord Yahweh!"

⁵ We sin and we are depraved, we do wickedly and revolt, we withdraw from Thy instructions and from Thy judgments."

²⁴ Seventy sevens are segregated for your people and for your holy city:To detain transgression, to cause sin to end, to make a propitiatory shelter for depravity; to bring the righteousness of the eons, to seal the vision and the prophet, to anoint the holy of holies."

¹² For, if they are bringing up their sons, then will I bereave them of a human, for, moreover, woe to them when My control is away from them!"

Therefore I forestalled by running away to Tharshish, for I know that You are a gracious El, and compassionate, slow to anger and of much kindness, and regretting concerning the evil." ³ And now, Yahweh, take, I pray, my soul from me, for better is my death than my life."

⁸ And it is coming as the sun rises, that Elohim is assigning a hot east wind, and the sun is smiting on the head of Jonah, and he is swooning. And he is asking for his soul to die and is saying, Better is my death than my life."

⁸ And, howbeit, I am full of the vigor of the spirit of Yahweh, and of judgment and of mastery, to tell to Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin."

¹⁵ And now we are pronouncing the arrogant happy. Moreover, the doers of wickedness are built up. Moreover, they test Elohim, and are escaping."

²³ "Lo! The virgin shall be pregnant
And shall be bringing forth a Son,
And they shall be calling His name 'Emmanuel,'
which is, being construed, "God with us."

⁷ Jesus averred to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not be putting on trial the Lord your God.'"

¹⁸ Now to whom does He swear, not to be entering into His stopping, except to the stubborn? ¹⁹ And we are observing that they could not enter because of unbelief.

¹ We may be afraid then, lest at some time, a promise being left of entering into His stopping, anyone of you may be seeming to be deficient."

³ Then we who believe are entering into the stopping, according as He has declared, "As I swear in My indignation, 'If they shall be entering into My stopping-!'although the works occur from the disruption of the world."

³⁸ Now My "just one by faith shall be living,and "If he should ever be shrinking, My soul is not delighting in him." ³⁹ Yet we are not of those shrinking back to destruction, but of faith for the procuring of the soul."

²¹ For it were better for them not to have recognized the way of righteousness, than, recognizing it, to go back to what was behind, from the holy precept given over to them." ²² Now that in the true proverb has befallen them: "A cur turning to its own vomit,and "A bathed sow to her wallowing in the mire."

¹⁴ And this is the boldness which we have toward Him, that if we should be requesting anything according to his will, He is hearing us." ¹⁵ And if ever we are aware that He is hearing us, whatever we may be requesting, we are aware that we have the requests which we have requested from Him." ¹⁶ If anyone should be perceiving his brother sinning a sin not to death, he shall be requesting, and He will be giving him life for those sinning not to death. There is a sin to death: I am not saying that he should be asking concerning that."

⁵ Now I am intending to remind you, you who once are aware of all, that the Lord, when saving the people out of the land of Egypt, secondly destroys those who believe not."

¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, going according to their desires, and their mouth is speaking pompous things, marveling at the aspect of things, on behalf of benefit."

¹⁰ the twenty-four elders, also, will be falling before Him Who is sitting on the throne and will be worshiping Him Who is living for the eons of the eons (Amen!). And they are casting their wreaths before the throne, saying,

¹⁴ And the four animals said, "Amen!And the elders fall and worship."

¹¹ And all the messengers stood around the throne and the elders and the four animals. And they fall on their faces before the throne and worship God,

³ And I will be endowing My two witnesses and they will be prophesying a thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."
