² In the one basket [are] figs very good, like the first-ripe figs, and in the other basket [are] figs very bad, that are not eaten for badness."

⁴ what is there to do further for My vineyard, that I have not done for it? For what reason, when I expect it to yield grapes, yet it is yielding stinking fruit?

⁷ For the vineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of Israel, and each man of Judah His plant delectable. And He is expecting judgment, and behold! Transgression! Righteousness, and behold! A cry!"

⁵ Thus said Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, Like these good figs so do I acknowledge The removed of Judah--that I sent from this place, [To] the land of the Chaldeans--for good." ⁶ And I have set Mine eyes on them for good, And have brought them back to this land, And built them up, and I throw not down, And have planted them, and pluck not up." ⁷ And have given to them a heart to know Me, For I [am] Yahweh, And they have been to Me for a people, And I am to them for Elohim, For they turned back unto Me with all their heart." ⁸ And like the bad figs, that are not eaten for badness, Surely thus said Yahweh:So do I make Zedekiah king of Judah, And his heads, and the remnant of Jerusalem, Who are left in this land, And who are dwelling in the land of Egypt, ⁹ And I have given them for a trembling, For evil--to all kingdoms of the earth, For a reproach, and for a simile, For a byword, and for a reviling, In all the places whither I drive them." ¹⁰ And I have sent against them the sword, The famine and the pestilence, Till their consumption from off the ground, That I gave to them and to their fathers!"

¹⁷ Thus said Yahweh of Hosts, Lo, I am sending among them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and I have given them up as figs that [are] vile, that are not eaten for badness."

² `Son of man, What is the vine-tree more than any tree? The vine-branch that has been, Among trees of the forest? ³ Is wood taken from it to use for work? Do they take of it a pin to hang any vessel on it? ⁴ Lo, to the fire it has been given for fuel, Its two ends has the fire eaten, And its midst has been scorched! Is it profitable for work? ⁵ Lo, in its being perfect it is not used for work, How much less, when fire has eaten of it, And it is scorched, Has it been used yet for work?

¹⁰ As grapes in a wilderness I found Israel; as a firstfruit, when the fig tree is in its beginning, I saw your forefathers. They came to Baal-peor and are sequestering themselves for shame. And they are becoming abominations, as that which they love."

¹ Alack to me! For I become as the gatherings of the straw of the harvest, as the clean-gleanings of the vintage. There is no cluster to eat; my soul yearns for the firstfruit."

¹² Yet you are profaning Me when you say, The table of Yahweh, sullied is it, and its produce. Despised is its food." ¹³ And you say, Behold what tiredness it is! And you puff at Me, says Yahweh of hosts. And you bring the pillaged, and the lame and the ill. And when you bring the approach present, shall I accept it from your hand? says Yahweh of hosts." ¹⁴ And cursed be the plotter, when there is a male in his drove, and his vow is on him, yet he is sacrificing what is ruined to Yahweh. For a great King am I, says Yahweh of hosts, and My name is feared among the nations."

¹³ You are the salt of the earth. Now, if the salt should be made insipid, with what will it be salted? For nothing does it still avail except to be cast outside, to be trampled by men.
