³⁶ And Abigail comes in unto Nabal, and lo, he has a banquet in his house, like a banquet of the king, and the heart of Nabal [is] glad within him, and he [is] drunk unto excess, and she has not declared to him anything, less or more, till the light of the morning.

¹⁶ and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking--drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.

³ he gave a banquet in the third year of his reign for all his chief officials and courtiers:the retinue of Persia and Media, the highborn and the chiefs of the provinces who were before him, ⁴ when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the esteem and beauty of his greatness, for many days--180 days. ⁵ And when these days were fulfilled, the king gave a seven-day banquet in the court of the king's garden pavilion for all the people found in the castle of Susa, from the greatest unto the smallest. ⁶ Awnings of pale cotton and blue wool were held with cord lines of fine linen and purple material on silver ring-bands and marble columns. There were couches of gold and silver on a pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and black marble. ⁷ Drinks were served in gold vessels, some vessels being diverse from other vessels, and the royal wine was abundant, according to the means of the king.

⁵ It is good when a man is gracious and obliging; He shall sustain his affairs with right judgment.

¹ Wine is a mocker; an intoxicant is a discomfiter; And anyone led into error by it is not wise.

²⁹ Who has woe? who has uneasiness? who has quarrels? Who has deep concerns? who has gratuitous injuries? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ They have who delay over wine, Who come to investigate a blend." ³¹ Do not stare at wine when it is red, When it casts its sparkle in the cup and goes down evenly." ³² Its aftereffect shall bite like a serpent And spread pain like a yellow viper. ³³ Your eyes shall see strange things, And your heart shall speak wayward thoughts." ³⁴ You will become like one who lies down on the heart of the sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of the rigging." ³⁵ They smite me, yet I am not at all wounded; They beat me, yet I have no knowledge of it. When shall I awake? I shall do it again; I shall seek it once more."

² Mirth, I said, is a raving, And rejoicing, what then is it achieving? ³ I explored within my heart by stimulating my flesh with wine (While my heart was leading with wisdom) And by getting a hold on frivolity, Until I should see just where good may be for the sons of humanity In what they do under the heavens during the number of days in their lives."

¹⁹ The making of bread is for mirth, And wine gives rejoicing to life, While silver answers for everything."

¹¹ Woe! Early morning risers, pursuing an intoxicant! Delaying in the gloaming, wine is making them flare up."

³ With their feet will they tramp the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,

⁷ And, moreover, these by wine, do err, and by an intoxicant they stray. Priest and prophet err by an intoxicant. They are swallowed up because of the wine. They stray because of the intoxicant. They err in sight, quaver in mediation, ⁸ for all tables are full of vomit. There fails to be a place without filth.

⁵⁷ And I have caused its princes to drink, And its wise men, its governors, And its prefects, and its mighty ones, And they have slept a sleep eonian, And they awake not--an affirmation of the king, Yahweh of Hosts [is] His name."

¹ Belshazzar the king makes a grand dinner for a thousand of his grandees and is drinking turbid wine in view of the thousand. ² When tasting the turbid wine, Belshazzar says to bring hither the gold and silver vessels of the house of Eloah which his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, that they may drink from them--the king and his grandees, his consorts and his concubines." ³ Then they bring hither the gold and silver vessels which they had taken from the temple, the house of the Eloah in Jerusalem. ¹¹ and wine and grape juice shall take their heart.

¹⁰ Though they are still as entangled briars, and as those groggy with their grog, they shall be devoured as straw fully dry."

¹⁵ Woe to him giving his associate drink, adjoining your fury, and, indeed, making him drunk that he may look on their nakedness." ¹⁶ You are satisfied with dishonor rather than glory; you, moreover, drink and be uncircumcised. The cup of Yahweh's right hand shall go around to you, and ignominy is added to your glory."

¹⁶ Lo! I am dispatching you as a sheep in the midst of wolves. Become, then, prudent as serpents and artless as doves."

¹² Now He said to him also who has invited Him, "Whenever you may be making a luncheon or a dinner, do not be summoning your friends, nor yet your brothers, nor yet your relatives, nor yet rich neighbors, lest at some time they also should be inviting you in return, and repayment may come to you."

³⁴ Now take heed to yourselves, lest at some time your hearts should be burdened with crapulence and drunkenness and the worries of life's affairs, and that day may be standing by you unawares,

¹³ As in the day, respectably, should we be walking, not in revelries and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy,

¹⁴ Wherefore He is saying, 'Rouse! O drowsy one, and rise from among the dead, and Christ shall dawn upon you!'"

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which is profligacy, but be filled full with spirit,

⁷ For those who are drowsing are drowsing at night, and those who are drunk are drunk at night." ⁸ Yet we, being of the day, may be sober, putting on the cuirass of faith and love, and the helmet, the expectation of salvation,
