² For behold, Your enemies have made a noise; and they that hate You have lifted up the head.

²⁸ Thus Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they did not lift up their head any more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

²⁸ Because you were angry against Me, and your fierceness has come up into My ears, therefore will I put My hooks in your nostrils, and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way in which you came.

¹ Why did the heathen rage, and the nations imagine vain things? ² The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers gathered themselves together, against the Lord, and against His Christ;

⁴ And they that hate You have boasted in the midst of Your feast; they have set up their standards for signs,

²³ Forget not the voice of Your enemies; let the pride of them that hate You continually ascend before You.

⁴ I said unto the transgressors, Do not transgress; and to the sinners, Lift not up the horn. ⁵ Lift not up your horn on high; speak not unrighteousness against God.

¹⁵ The Lord's enemies would have lied to Him; but their time shall be forever.

³ The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices,

¹² Woe to the multitude of many nations, as the swelling sea, so shall you be confounded; and the force of many nations shall sound like water;

²³ Whom have you reproached and provoked? And against whom have you lifted up your voice? And have you not lifted up your eyes on high against the Holy One of Israel?

²⁹ And your wrath in which you have been enraged, and your rage has come up before Me; therefore I will put a hook in your nose, and a bit in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way which you came.

¹⁹ And they shall fight against you, but they shall by no means prevail against you; because I am with you, to deliver you, says the Lord.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was emboldened to act proudly, he was deposed from his royal throne, and his honor was taken from him. ²¹ And he was driven forth from men. And a heart was given to him after the nature of wild beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. And they fed him with grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God is Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whomever He chooses. ²² And you accordingly, his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart before God: do you not know all this? ²³ And you have exalted yourself against the Lord God of heaven; and they have brought before you the vessels of His house, and you, your nobles, your mistresses, and your concubines have drunk wine out of them; and you have praised the gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, and which hear not, and know not: and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified.

²⁴ And Pilate, seeing that nothing was being gained, but rather a riot was starting, taking water, he washed his hands clean in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Man. You see to it."

²⁵ who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: 'Why did the nations rage, and the people conspired vain things? ²⁶ The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were assembled together against the LORD and against His Christ.' ²⁷ "For truly they were assembled against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,

²² And the crowd rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore their clothes and ordered men to beat them with rods.

⁵ And the Jews who did not believe took some wicked men from the marketplace, and forming a mob, they threw the city into disorder, and came upon the house of Jason, and sought to bring them to the people.

²⁸ And hearing, and becoming full of anger, they were crying out saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" ²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one purpose into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, traveling companions of Paul. ³⁰ Now when Paul desired to enter into the people, the disciples would not permit him. ³¹ And also some of the officials of Asia, being friends with him, sent word to him and urged him not to present himself in the theater. ³² Then others were calling out something different, for the assembly was confused, and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together. ³³ And from the crowd they brought forward Alexander, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, and desired to make a defense to the people. ³⁴ But recognizing he was a Jew, there arose one voice from them all, calling out for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" ³⁵ And having quieted the crowd, the city clerk said: "Men of Ephesus, for what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image fallen from heaven? ³⁶ Therefore, since these things are undeniable, it is necessary for you to be quieted and to do nothing rash. ³⁷ For you brought these men, neither temple thieves nor blasphemers of your goddess. ³⁸ Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a word against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. ³⁹ But if you are wanting to know anything about other matters, it shall be determined by the lawful assembly. ⁴⁰ For we also are in danger of being accused of insurrection concerning today, there being no cause for which we will be able to give, as an explanation for this commotion. ⁴¹ And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

³⁰ And all the city was aroused; and there was a mob forming of the people, and taking hold of Paul they were dragging him outside the temple; and immediately the doors were shut.

²² Now they were listening to him until this statement, and they lifted their voice saying, "Take away such a man from the earth, for it is not fitting for him to live!"

¹⁰ And when much dissension developed, the commander, fearing lest Paul might be torn apart by them, commanded the detachment of soldiers to go down and seize him from the midst of them, and to bring him into the barracks.
