¹³ But I, when they troubled me, put on sackcloth, and humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer shall return to my own bosom.

²⁹ And this shall be a perpetual statute for you; in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls, and shall do no work, the native and the stranger who abides among you.

³¹ This shall be to you a most holy Sabbath, a rest, and you shall humble your souls; it is a perpetual ordinance.

²⁷ And because of the word, Ahab was pierced with sorrow before the Lord, and he both went weeping, and tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his body, and fasted; he put on sackcloth also in the day that he smote Naboth the Jezreelite, and went his way. ²⁸ And the word of the Lord came by the hand of his servant Elijah concerning Ahab, and the Lord said, ²⁹ Have you seen how Ahab has been pricked to the heart before Me? ¹⁰ And I bowed down my soul with fasting, and that was made my reproach. ¹¹ And I put on sackcloth for my covering; and I became a proverb to them.

³ saying, Why have we fasted, and You did not see? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You did not know it? Nay, in the days of your fasts you find your pleasures, and all them that are under your power you wound.

⁵ I have not chosen this fast, nor such a day for a man to afflict his soul; although you should bend down your neck as a ring, and spread under you sackcloth and ashes, neither thus shall you call a fast acceptable.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

¹⁴ Then the disciples of John approached Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?" ¹⁵ And Jesus said to them, "Can the groomsmen mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

¹³ And if indeed the house should be worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it should not be worthy, let your peace return to you.

⁶ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon it; if not, it will return to you.

¹⁴ Bless those that persecute you; bless and do not curse. ¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice, and weep with those that weep.
