And he called His name JESUS.

⁴ This is the book of the generations of heaven and earth, when they were made, in the day in which the Lord God made the heaven and the earth,

¹ This is the genealogy of men in the day in which God made Adam; in the image of God He made him:

^{9 (6:10)} And these are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man; being perfect in his generation; Noah was well pleasing to God.

³ And I will bless those that bless you, and curse those that curse you, and in you shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.

¹⁹ And God said to Abraham, Yea, behold, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to him and to his seed after him.

²¹ But I will establish My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time, in the next year.

¹⁰ And He said, I will return and come to you according to this period seasonably, and Sarah your wife shall have a son; and Sarah heard at the door of the tent, being behind him.

² And she conceived and bore to Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time according as the Lord spoke to him. ³ And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him — whom Sarah bore to him — Isaac. ⁴ And Abraham circumcised Isaac on the eighth day, as God commanded him. ⁵ And Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him.

² And He said, Take your son, the beloved one, whom you have loved — Isaac, and go into the high land, and offer him there for a whole burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you. ³ And Abraham rose up in the morning and saddled his donkey, and he took with him two servants, and Isaac his son, and having split wood for a whole burnt offering, he arose and departed, and came to the place of which God spoke to him,

¹⁸ And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.

²⁶ And after this his brother came forth, and his hand took hold of the heel of Esau; and she called his name Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when Rebecca bore them.

³ And sojourn in this land; and I will be with you, and bless you, for I will give to you and to your seed all this land; and I will establish My oath which I swore to your father Abraham. ⁴ And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven; and I will give to your seed all this land, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in your seed. ⁵ Because Abraham your father listened to My voice, and kept My injunctions, My commandments, My ordinances, and My statutes.

¹³ And the Lord stood upon it, and said, I am the God of your father Abraham, and the God of Isaac; fear not, the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your seed. ¹⁴ And your seed shall be as the sand of the earth; and it shall spread abroad to the sea, and the south, and the north, and to the east; and in you and in your seed shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.

³² And Leah conceived and bore a son to Jacob; and she called his name Reuben, saying, Because the Lord has looked on my humiliation, and has given me a son, now then my husband will love me. ³³ And she conceived again, and bore a second son to Jacob; and she said, Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, He has given to me this one also; and she called his name Simeon. ³⁴ And she conceived yet again, and bore a son, and said, In the present time my husband will be with me, for I have born him three sons; therefore she called his name Levi. ³⁵ And having conceived yet again, she bore a son, and said, Now yet again this time will I give thanks to the Lord; therefore she called his name, Judah; and ceased bearing.

⁵ And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ And Rachel said, God has given judgment for me, and heard my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived yet again, and bore a second son to Jacob. ⁸ And Rachel said, God has helped me, and I contended with my sister and prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali. ⁹ And Leah saw that she ceased from bearing, and she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her to Jacob for a wife; and he went in to her. ¹⁰ And Zilpah Leah's maid conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ And Leah said, It is happily: and she called his name Gad. ¹² And Zilpah Leah's maid conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ And Leah said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name Asher. ¹⁴ And Reuben went in the day of barley harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah; and Rachel said to Leah her sister, Give me some of your son's mandrakes. ¹⁵ And Leah said, Is it not enough for you that you have taken my husband, will you also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes. ¹⁶ And Jacob came in out of the field in the evening; and Leah went forth to meet him, and said, You shall come in to me this day, for I have hired you for my son's mandrakes; and he lay with her that night. ¹⁷ And God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ And Leah said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar, which is, Reward. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ And Leah said, God has given me a good gift in this time; my husband will choose me, for I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

¹¹ And the Angel of God said to me in a dream, Jacob; and I said, What is it?

¹⁶ (And Jacob journeyed from Bethel, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gader,) and it came to pass when he drew near to Habratha, to enter into Ephratha, Rachel labored in childbirth; and she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And it came to pass in her hard labor, that the midwife said to her, Be of good courage, for you shall also have this son. ¹⁸ And it came to pass in her giving up the ghost (for she was dying), that she called his name, The son of my pain; but his father called his name Benjamin. ¹⁹ So Rachel died, and was buried in the way of the course of Ephratha, (that is, Bethlehem.)

And there were sons born to Manasseh, which the Syrian concubine bore to him, even Machir. And Machir begot Gilead. And the sons of Ephraim, the brother of Manasseh were Sutalaam, and Taam. And the son of Sutalaam was Edom. ²¹ And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, and Ashbel. And the sons of Belah were Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, and Muppim. And Gera begot Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel, which she bore to Jacob; eighteen persons in all. ²³ The son of Dan was Hushim. ²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, who bore these to Jacob; seven persons in all. ²⁶ And all the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, who came out of his loins, besides the wives of the sons of Jacob, were sixty-six persons in all. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in the land of Egypt were nine persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came with Joseph into Egypt were seventy-five persons.

⁸ Judah, your brothers have praised you, and your hands shall be on the back of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp: from the tender plant, my son, you have gone up. Having couched, you lie down like a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up? ¹⁰ A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and He is the expectation of nations. ¹¹ Binding his foal to the vine, and the foal of his donkey to the branch of it, he shall wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape. ¹² His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.

² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, ³ Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, ⁴ Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls born of Jacob were seventy-five.

² Sanctify to Me every firstborn, first produced, opening every womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast: it is Mine.

²⁹ You shall not keep back the firstfruits of your threshing floor and press. The firstborn of your sons you shall give unto Me.

¹⁶ And Moses did all things whatsoever the Lord commanded him, so did he.

¹⁹ And he stretched out the curtains over the tabernacle, and put the veil of the tabernacle on it above as the Lord commanded Moses.

²⁵ And he put on it its lamps before the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

²⁰ And if anyone should lie carnally with a woman, and she should be a home-servant kept for a man, and she has not been ransomed, and her freedom has not been given to her, they shall be visited with punishment; but they shall not die, because she was not set at liberty.

¹⁰ Whatever man shall commit adultery with the wife of a man, or whoever shall commit adultery with the wife of his neighbor, let them die the death, the adulterer and the adulteress.

⁷ of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;

³ And they that encamp first toward the east shall be the order of the camp of Judah with their army, and the prince of the sons of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

¹² And he that offered his gift on the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, prince of the tribe of Judah.

¹⁷ And for a sacrifice of peace offering, two heifers, five rams, five male goats, five ewe lambs of a year old: this was the gift of Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

¹⁴ And they first set in motion the order of the camp of the children of Judah with their host; and over their host was Nahshon, son of Amminadab.

⁶ And He said to them, Hear My words: If there should be a prophet among you of the Lord, I will be made known to him in a vision, and in sleep will I speak to him.

²⁰ And these were the sons of Judah, according to their families: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Parzites; of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites. ²¹ And the sons of Perez were: to Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; to Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.

¹ And if anyone should take a wife, and should dwell with her, then it shall come to pass if she should not have found favor before him, because he has found some unbecoming thing in her, that he shall write for her a certificate of divorce, and give it into her hands, and he shall send her away out of his house. ² And if she should go away and be married to another man; ³ and the last husband should hate her, and write for her a certificate of divorce, and should give it into her hands, and send her away out of his house, and the last husband should die, who took her to himself for a wife; ⁴ the former husband who sent her away shall not be able to return and take her to himself for a wife, after she has been defiled; because it is an abomination before the Lord your God, and you shall not defile the land which the Lord your God gives you to inherit.

¹ And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two young men to spy the land, saying, Go up and view the land; especially Jericho. ² And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor; and they served other gods. ³ And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed; ⁴ and I gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau Mount Seir for him to inherit. And Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt, and became there a great and populous and mighty nation, and the Egyptians afflicted them.

³ And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold, you are barren and have not given birth; yet you shall conceive a son.

⁸ And Manoah prayed to the Lord and said, I pray to You, O Lord my lord, concerning the Man of God whom You sent; let Him now come to us once more, and teach us what we shall do with the child about to be born. ⁹ And the Lord heard the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came yet again to the woman. And she sat in the field, and Manoah her husband was not with her.

⁴ And they took to themselves wives, women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the second was Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

¹⁶ And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave you, or to return from following you; for wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. ¹⁷ And wherever you die, I will die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if I leave you, for death only shall divide between me and you.

²² So Naomi and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, returned from the country of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him, for we may not sit down till he comes. ¹² And he sent and fetched him. And he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes, and very good looking. And the Lord said to Samuel, Arise, and anoint David, for he is good. ¹³ And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose, and departed to Ramah.

³⁰ And Saul was exceedingly angry with Jonathan, and said to him, You son of a traitorous woman! For do I not know that you are an accomplice with the son of Jesse to yourself, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, your kingdom shall not be established: now then send and take the young man, for he shall surely die!

⁸ That you are conspiring against me, and there is no one that informs me, whereas my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or informs me, that my son has stirred up my servant against me for an enemy, as it is this day?

¹² And it shall come to pass when your days have been fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, that I will raise up your seed after you, even from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build for Me a house for My name, and I will set up his throne, even forever. ¹⁴ I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son. And when he happens to transgress, then will I chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men. ¹⁵ But My mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from those whom I removed from My presence. ¹⁶ And his house shall be made sure, and his kingdom forever before Me, and his throne shall be established forever.

³ And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba the daughter of Eliab, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

²⁶ And the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, and she mourned for her husband. ²⁷ And the time of mourning expired, and David sent and took her into his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son: but the thing which David did was evil in the eyes of the Lord.

²⁴ And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and he went in to her, and lay with her; and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his named Solomon, and the Lord loved him. ²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and called his name Jedidiah, for the Lord's sake.

¹ And these are the last words of David. Faithful is David the son of Jesse, and faithful is the man whom the Lord has raised up to be the anointed of the God of Jacob, and beautiful are the psalms of Israel.

¹¹ And Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and our lord David knows it not? ¹² And now come, let me give you counsel, and you shall rescue your life, and the life of your son Solomon. ¹³ Make haste, and go in to King David, and you shall speak to him, saying, Has not you, my lord, O king, sworn to your handmaid, saying, Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign? ¹⁴ And behold, while you are still speaking there with the king, I also will come in after you, and will confirm your words. ¹⁵ So Bathsheba went in to the king into the chamber. And the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king. ¹⁶ And Bathsheba bowed down before the king; and the king said, What is your request? ¹⁷ And she said, My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your handmaid, saying, Your son Solomon shall reign after me, and shall sit upon my throne.

²⁸ And King David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came in before the king, and stood before him. ²⁹ And the king swore, and said, As the Lord lives who redeemed my soul out of all affliction, ³⁰ as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my place, so will I do this day. ³¹ And Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground, and paid homage to the king, and said, Let my lord King David live forever.

¹⁵ and he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel today, who spoke by His mouth concerning David my father, and has fulfilled it with his hands, saying,

²⁴ which You have kept toward Your servant David my father; for You have spoken by Your mouth and You have fulfilled it with Your hands, as it is this day.

⁴³ And Solomon slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David his father. And it came to pass when Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of it, even while he was yet in Egypt as he fled from the face of Solomon and dwelt in Egypt, he straightway came into his own city, into the land of Sarira in the mount of Ephraim. And King Solomon slept with his fathers, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

² And he cried against the altar by the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus says the Lord: Behold, a son is to be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and he shall offer upon you the priests of the high places, even of them that sacrifice upon you, and he shall burn men's bones upon you.

⁸ And Abijam slept with his fathers in the twenty-fourth year of Jeroboam; and he is buried with his fathers in the City of David: And Asa his son reigned in his place. ⁹ In the twenty-fourth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa began to reign over Judah. ¹⁰ And he reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Ana, daughter of Absalom. ¹¹ And Asa did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, as David his father. ¹² And he removed the sodomites from out of the land, and abolished all the practices which his fathers had kept up. ¹³ And he removed Ana his mother from being queen, forasmuch as she gathered a meeting in her grove: and Asa cut down her retreats, and burnt them with fire in the Brook of Kidron. ¹⁴ But he removed not the high places; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord all his days. ¹⁵ And he brought in the pillars of his father, he even brought in his gold and silver pillars into the house of the Lord, and his vessels. ¹⁶ And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. ¹⁷ And Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, so that no one should go out or come in for Asa king of Judah. ¹⁸ And Asa took all the silver and the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king's house, and gave them into the hands of his servants; and King Asa sent them out to the son of Hadad, the son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying, ¹⁹ Make a covenant between me and you, and between my father and your father: Behold, I have sent forth to you gold and silver for gifts: come, break your league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may go up from me. ²⁰ And the son of Hadad hearkened to King Asa, and sent the chiefs of his forces to the cities of Israel; and they smote Ijon, Dan, and Abel of the house of Maachah, and all Chinneroth, as far as the whole land of Naphtali. ²¹ And it came to pass when Baasha heard it, that he left off building Ramah, and returned to Tirzah. ²² And King Asa charged all Judah without exception. And they took up the stones of Ramah and its timbers with which Baasha was building; and King Asa built with them upon the whole hill of Benjamin, and the watchtower. ²³ And the rest of the history of Asa, and all his mighty deeds which he wrought, and the cities which he built, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet. ²⁴ And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Be of good courage, go in and do according to your word; but make me a little cake from it first, and you shall bring it out to me, and you shall make some for yourself and your children last.

² And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat king of Judah went down to the king of Israel. ³ And the king of Israel said to his servants, Do you know that Ramoth Gilead is ours, and we are slow to take it out of the hand of the king of Syria? ⁴ And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Will you go up with us to Ramoth Gilead to battle? ⁵ And Jehoshaphat said, As I am, so are you also; as my people, so are your people; as my horses, so are your horses. And Jehoshaphat king of Judah said to the king of Israel, Please inquire of the Lord today. ⁶ And the king of Israel gathered all the prophets together, about four hundred men. And the king said to them, Shall I go up to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I refrain? And they said, Go up, for the Lord will surely give it into the hands of the king. ⁷ And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, Is there not still a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him? ⁸ And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, There is one man here for us to inquire of the Lord by; but I hate him, for he does not speak good of me, but only evil; Micaiah son of Imlah. And the king said to him, Micaiah, shall I go up to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I refrain? And he said, Go up, for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king. ¹⁶ And the king said to him, How often must I adjure you, that you speak truth to me in the name of the Lord? ¹⁷ And he said, Not so. I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains as a flock without a shepherd. And the Lord said, Is not God the Lord of these? Let each one return to his home in peace. ¹⁸ And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, Did I not say to you that this man does not prophesy good to me, for he speaks nothing but evil? ¹⁹ And Micaiah said, Not so, it is not I: hear the word of the Lord: I saw the God of Israel sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven stood about Him on His right hand and on His left. ²⁰ And the Lord said, Who will deceive Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall in Ramoth Gilead? And one spoke one way, and another spoke another way. ²¹ And there came forth a spirit and stood before the Lord, and said, I will deceive him. ²² And the Lord said to him, In what way? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, You shall deceive him; yea, and you shall prevail: go forth, and do so. ²³ And now, behold, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets, and the Lord has spoken evil against you. ²⁴ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, What sort of a spirit of the Lord has spoken in you? ²⁵ And Micaiah said, Behold, you shall see in that day, when you shall go into an innermost chamber to hide yourself there. ²⁶ And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and take him away to Semer the keeper of the city; ²⁷ and tell Joash the king's son to put this fellow in prison, and to feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction, until I return in peace. ²⁸ And Micaiah said, If you ever return in peace, the Lord has not spoken by me. ²⁹ So the king of Israel went up, and Jehoshaphat king of Judah with him to Ramoth Gilead. ³⁰ And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle, and you put on my robes. So the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle. ³¹ And the king of Syria had charged the thirty-two captains of his chariots, saying, Fight not against small or great, but against the king of Israel only. ³² And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat king of Judah, that they said, this seems to be the king of Israel. And they compassed him about to fight against him; and Jehoshaphat cried out. ³³ And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that this was not the king of Israel, that they returned from him. ³⁴ And one drew a bow with a good aim, and struck the king of Israel between the lungs and the breastplate. And he said to his charioteer, Turn your hands, and carry me away out of the battle, for I am wounded. ³⁵ And the war was turned in that day, and the king was standing on the chariot, against Syria from morning till evening; and he shed the blood out of his wound, into the bottom of the chariot, and died at evening, and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot. ³⁶ And the herald of the army stood at sunset, saying, Let every man go to his own city and his own land, ³⁷ for the king is dead. And they came to Samaria, and buried the king in Samaria. ³⁸ And they washed the chariot at the fountain of Samaria; and the swine and the dogs licked up the blood, and the harlots washed themselves in the blood, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke. ³⁹ And the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities which he built, behold, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? ⁴⁰ And Ahab slept with his fathers, and Ahaziah his son reigned in his place. ⁴¹ And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa reigned over Judah. In the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel Jehoshaphat began to reign. ⁴² He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Azuba daughter of Shilhi. ⁴³ And he walked in all the way of Asa his father: he turned not from it, even from doing that which was right in the eyes of the Lord. And he turned and went away in a rage. ¹³ And his servants came near and said to him, Suppose the prophet had spoken a great thing to you, would you not perform it? Yet he has but said to you, Wash, and be cleansed. ¹⁴ So Naaman went down, and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of Elisha; and his flesh returned to him as the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed.

³² In the second year of Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham the son of Azariah king of Judah began to reign.

And his mother's name was Abi, daughter of Zechariah. ³ And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David did. ⁴ He removed the high places, and broke in pieces the pillars, and utterly destroyed the groves, and the bronze serpent which Moses made, because until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan. ⁵ He trusted in the Lord God of Israel. And after him there was none like him among the kings of Judah, nor among those that were before him. ⁶ And he held fast to the Lord, he departed not from following Him; and he kept His commandments, as many as He commanded Moses. ⁷ And the Lord was with him; and he was wise in all that he undertook. And he revolted from the king of the Assyrians, and served him not. ⁸ He struck the Philistines, even to Gaza, and to the border of it, from the tower of the watchmen even to the strong city. ⁹ And it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah (this is the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel), that Shalmaneser king of the Assyrians came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ¹⁰ And he took it at the end of three years, in the sixth year of Hezekiah, (this is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, when Samaria was taken). ¹¹ And the king of the Assyrians carried away the Samaritans to Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor, by the River Gozan, and in the mountains of the Medes; ¹² because they hearkened not to the voice of the Lord their God, and transgressed His covenant, in all things that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and hearkened not to them, nor did them. ¹³ And in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came up against the strong cities of Judah, and took them. ¹⁴ And Hezekiah king of Judah sent messengers to the king of the Assyrians to Lachish, saying, I have offended; depart from me: whatsoever you shall lay upon me, I will bear. And Eliakim the son of Hilkiah the steward, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, came out to them, ¹⁹ and Rabshakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the king, the great king of the Assyrians: What confidence is this in which you trust? ²⁰ You have said, (but they are mere words) I have counsel and strength for war. Now then, in whom do you trust, that you have revolted from me?

²¹ And the king commanded all the people, saying, Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in the Book of the Covenant. ²² Such a Passover as this had not been kept from the days of the judges who judged Israel, even all the days of the kings of Israel, and of the kings of Judah. ²³ But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, was the Passover kept to the Lord in Jerusalem. ²⁴ Moreover Josiah removed the sorcerers and the wizards and the spiritists and the idols, and all the abominations that had been set up in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might keep the words of the law that were written in the book, which Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the Lord. ²⁵ There was no king like him before him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses; and after him there rose none like him. ²⁶ Nevertheless the Lord turned not from the fierceness of His great anger, wherewith He was wroth in His anger against Judah, because of the provocations, with which Manasseh provoked Him. ²⁷ And the Lord said, I will also remove Judah from My presence, as I removed Israel, and I will reject this city which I have chosen, even Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, My name shall be there. ²⁸ And the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ²⁹ And in his days Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went up against the king of the Assyrians, to the River Euphrates; and Josiah went out to meet him. And Necho killed him in Megiddo when he saw him. ³⁰ And his servants carried him dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in the place of his father. ³¹ Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hamutal, daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

³ Moreover it was the purpose of the Lord concerning Judah, to remove them from His presence, because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did. ⁴ Moreover he shed innocent blood, and filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord would not pardon it.

¹⁴ And he carried away the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all the captains, and the mighty men, taking captive ten thousand prisoners, and every craftsmen and smith; and only the poor of the land were left.

¹⁹ And the sons of Pedaiah were Zerubbabel and Shimei; and the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam, Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister, ²⁰ and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushab-Hesed, five in all. ²¹ And the sons of Hananiah were Pelatiah and Jeshaiah his son, Rephaiah his son, Arnan his son, Obadiah his son, and Shechaniah his son. ²² And the son of Shechaniah was Shemaiah. And the sons of Shemaiah were Hattush, Joel, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat, six in all. ²³ And the sons of Neariah were Elioenai, Hezekiah, and Azrikam, three in all. ²⁴ And the sons of Elioenai were Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah, and Anani, seven in all.

¹ And the sons of Judah were Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal;

³¹ And Solomon fell asleep, and they buried him in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

¹ And it came to pass when the kingdom of Rehoboam was established, and when he had grown strong, that he forsook the commandments of the Lord, and all Israel with him.

⁷ And there are gathered to him pestilent men, transgressors, and he has risen up against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, while Rehoboam was young and fearful in heart, and he withstood him not.

¹ And Abijah rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In the days of Asa the land of Judah had rest for ten years. ² And he did that which was good and right in the sight of the Lord his God. ³ And he removed the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and broke the pillars in pieces, and cut down the groves; ⁴ and he told Judah to seek earnestly the Lord God of their fathers, and to perform the law and the commandments. ⁵ And he removed from all the cities of Judah the altars and the idols, and established in quietness ⁶ fortified cities in the land of Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in these years; for the Lord gave him rest. ⁷ And he said to Judah, Let us fortify these cities, and make walls, and towers, and gates, and bars; we shall prevail over the land, for as we have sought out the Lord our God, He has sought out us, and has given us rest round about, and prospered us. ⁸ And Asa had a force of armed men bearing shields and spears in the land of Judah, even three hundred thousand, and in the land of Benjamin two hundred and eighty thousand targeteers and archers; all these were mighty warriors. ⁹ And Zerah the Ethiopian went out against them, with a force of a million, and three hundred chariots; and came to Mareshah. ¹⁰ And Asa went out to meet him, and set the battle in array in the valley north of Mareshah. ¹¹ And Asa cried to the Lord his God, and said, O Lord, it is not impossible with You to save by many or by few: strengthen us, O Lord our God; for we trust in You, and in Your name we have come up against this great multitude. O Lord our God, let not man prevail against You. ¹² And the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. ¹³ And Asa and his people pursued them to Gerar; and the Ethiopians fell, so that they could not recover themselves; for they were crushed before the Lord, and before His army; and they took many spoils. ¹⁴ And they destroyed their towns roundabout Gerar; for the terror of the Lord was upon them; and they plundered all their cities, for they had much spoil. ¹⁵ Also they destroyed the tents of cattle, and the Alimazons, and took many sheep and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.

¹ And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and he strengthened himself against Israel. ² And he put garrisons in all the strong cities of Judah, and appointed captains in all the cities of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken. ³ And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, for he walked in the first ways of his father, and did not seek to idols; ⁴ but he sought the Lord God of his father, and walked in the commandments of his father, and not according to the works of Israel. ⁵ And the Lord prospered the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat; and he had great wealth and glory. ⁶ And his heart was exalted in the way of the Lord; and he removed the high places and the groves from the land of Judah. ⁷ And in the third year of his reign, he sent his chief men and his mighty men, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethaneel and Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. ⁸ And with them were the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tobadonijah, Levites, and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests. ⁹ And they taught in Judah, and there was with them the Book of the Law of the Lord, and they passed through the cities of Judah, and taught the people. ¹⁰ And the terror of the Lord was upon all the kingdoms of the land round about Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat. ¹¹ And some of the Philistines brought to Jehoshaphat gifts, and silver, and presents; and the Arabians brought him seven thousand seven hundred rams. ¹² And Jehoshaphat increased in greatness exceedingly, and built fortresses in Judea, and strong cities. ¹³ And he had many works in Judea. And the mighty men of war, the men of strength, were in Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And this is their number according to the houses of their fathers; even the captains of thousands in Judah were: Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of strength, three hundred thousand. ¹⁵ And after him, Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand. ¹⁶ And after him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who was zealous for the Lord; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of strength. ¹⁷ And out of Benjamin there was a mighty man of strength, even Eliada, and with him two hundred thousand archers and targeteers. ¹⁸ And after him Jehozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand mighty men of war. ¹⁹ These were the king's servants besides those whom the king put in the strong cities in all Judea.

¹ Then all the people of the land took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and they made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. ² He built Elath, he restored it to Judah, after the king slept with his fathers. ³ Uzziah began to reign at the age of sixteen years, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. ⁴ And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Amaziah his father did. ⁵ And he sought the Lord in the days of Zechariah, who understood the fear of the Lord; and in his days he sought the Lord, and the Lord prospered him. ⁶ And he went out and fought against the Philistines, and pulled down the walls of Gath, and the walls of Jabneh, and the walls of Ashdod, and he built cities near Ashdod, and among the Philistines. ⁷ And the Lord strengthened him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt on the rock, and against the Meunites. ⁸ And the Meunites gave gifts to Uzziah; and his fame spread as far as the entering in of Egypt, for he strengthened himself exceedingly. ⁹ And Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem, both at the Corner Gate, and at the Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress of the wall; and he fortified them. ¹⁰ And he built towers in the wilderness, and dug many wells, for he had many cattle in the low country and in the plain; and vinedressers in the mountain country and in Carmel, for he was a farmer. ¹¹ And Uzziah had a host of warriors that went out orderly to war, and returned orderly in number; and their number was made by the hand of Jeiel the scribe, and Maaseiah the officer, by the hand of Hananiah the king's deputy. ¹² The whole number of the chiefs of families of the mighty men of war was two thousand six hundred; ¹³ and with them was a warrior force of three hundred thousand and seven thousand five hundred; these waged war mightily to help the king against his enemies. ¹⁴ And Uzziah prepared for them, even for all the army, shields, spears, helmets, breastplates, bows, and slings for stones. ¹⁵ And he made in Jerusalem machines invented by a wise contriver, to be upon the towers and upon the corners, to cast darts and great stones. And the fame of their preparation was heard from a great distance; for he was marvelously helped, till he became strong. ¹⁶ And when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction; and he transgressed against the Lord his God, and went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. ¹⁷ And Azariah the priest went in after him, and with him eighty priests of the Lord, mighty men. ¹⁸ And they withstood Uzziah the king, and said to him, It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but only for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to sacrifice: Leave the sanctuary, for you have departed from the Lord; and this shall not be for glory to you from the Lord God. ¹⁹ And Uzziah was angry, and in his hand was the censer to burn incense in the temple. And when he was angry with the priests, then the leprosy rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the Lord, over the altar of incense. ²⁰ And Azariah the chief priest, and the other priests, turned to look at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead; and they got him out of there quickly, for he also hastened to go out, because the Lord had rebuked him. ²¹ And Uzziah the king was a leper to the day of his death, and he dwelt as a leper in a separate house; for he was cut off from the house of the Lord; and Jotham his son was set over his kingdom, judging the people of the land.

And the children of Ammon gave him a hundred talents of silver each year, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand measures of barley. And he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, as David his father. ² But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, for he made graven images. ³ And he sacrificed to their idols in the valley of the Son of Hinnom, and passed his children through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel. ⁴ And he burnt incense upon the high places, and upon the roofs, and under every shady tree. ⁵ And the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria. And the king attacked him, and took a great multitude of prisoners captive, and carried him to Damascus. Also God delivered him into the hands of the king of Israel, who defeated him with a great slaughter. ⁶ And Pekah the son of Remeliah king of Israel, killed in Judah in one day a hundred and twenty thousand mighty men, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. ⁷ And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king's son, and Azrikam the chief of his house, and Elkanah the king's deputy. ⁸ And the children of Israel took captive of their brethren three hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters, and they plundered them of much property, and brought the spoils to Samaria. ⁹ And there was a prophet of the Lord there whose name was Oded. And he went out to meet the army that was coming to Samaria, and said to them, Behold, the wrath of the Lord God of your fathers is upon Judah, and He has delivered them into your hands, but you have killed them in wrath, and it has reached even to heaven. ¹⁰ And now you talk of keeping the children of Judah and Jerusalem for servants and handmaidens. Behold, am I not with you to testify for the Lord your God? ¹¹ And now listen to me, and restore the prisoners of your brethren whom you have taken: for the fierce anger of the Lord is upon you. ¹² And the chiefs of the sons of Ephraim rose up, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, against those that came from the war, ¹³ and said to them, You shall not bring the prisoners here to us, for whereas sin against the Lord is already upon us, and you mean to add to our sins, and to our trespass: for our sin is great, and the fierce anger of the Lord is upon Israel. ¹⁴ So the warriors left the prisoners and the spoils before the princes and all the congregation. ¹⁵ And the men who were called by name rose up, and took hold of the prisoners, and clothed all the naked from the spoils, and gave them garments and shoes, and gave them food to eat, and oil to anoint themselves with, and they let everyone that was weak to ride on donkeys, and placed them in Jericho, the city of palm trees, with their brethren; and they returned to Samaria. ¹⁶ At that time King Ahaz sent to the king of Assyria to help him, and on this occasion, ¹⁷ because the Edomites had attacked him and attacked Judah, and taken a number of prisoners. ¹⁸ Also the Philistines had made an attack on the cities of the plain country, and the cities of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, and (the things in the house of the Lord, and the things in the house of the king, and of the princes, and they gave these to the king) Aijalon, Gederoth, Sochoh and her villages, Timnah and her villages, and Gimzo and her villages. And they dwelt there. ¹⁹ For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Judah, because he grievously departed from the Lord. ²⁰ And Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came against him, and he afflicted him. ²¹ And Ahaz took the things that were in the house of the Lord, and the things in the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave them to the king of Assyria; but he was no help to him, ²² but only troubled him in his affliction. And he departed yet again from the Lord, and King Ahaz said, ²³ I will seek after the gods of Damascus that attack me. And he said, Forasmuch as the gods of the king of Syria themselves strengthen them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, and they will help me. But they became a stumbling block to him, and to all Israel. ²⁴ And Ahaz removed the vessels of the house of the Lord, and cut them in pieces, and shut the doors of the house of the Lord, and made for himself altars in every corner in Jerusalem. ²⁵ And in every single city in Judah he made high places to burn incense to strange gods. ¹ And Hezekiah began to reign at the age of twenty-five years, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Abijah, daughter of Zechariah. ² And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done. ³ And it came to pass, when he was established over his kingdom, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the Lord, and repaired them. ⁴ And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and put them on the east side, ⁵ and said to them, Hear, you Levites: Now sanctify yourselves, and sanctify the house of the Lord God of your fathers, and cast out the impurity from the holy places. ⁶ For our fathers have revolted, and done that which was evil before the Lord our God, and have forsaken Him, and have turned away their face from the tabernacle of the Lord, and have turned their back. ⁷ And they have shut up the doors of the temple, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense, and have not offered whole burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel. ⁸ And the Lord was very angry with Judah and Jerusalem, and made them an astonishment, and a desolation, and a hissing, as you see with your eyes. ⁹ And behold, your fathers have been smitten with the sword, and your sons and your daughters and your wives are in captivity in a land not their own, as it is even now. ¹⁰ Therefore it is now in my heart to make a covenant, a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that He may turn away His fierce wrath from us. ¹¹ And now be not wanting to your duty, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before Him to minister, and to be ministers and burners of incense to Him. ¹² Then the Levites rose up, Mahath the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of Kohath: and of the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehalelel; and of the sons of Gershon, Joah the son of Zimmah, and Joadam: these were the sons of Joah. ¹³ And of the sons of Elizaphan: Shimri, and Jehiel. And of the sons of Asaph: Zechariah and Mattaniah; ¹⁴ and of the sons of Heman: Jeiel and Shimei; and of the sons of Jeduthun: Shemaiah and Uzziel. ¹⁵ And they gathered their brethren, and they purified themselves according to the king's command by the order of the Lord, to purify the house of the Lord. ¹⁶ And the priests entered into the house of the Lord, to purify it, and they cast out all the uncleanness that was found in the house of the Lord, even into the court of the house of the Lord. And the Levites received it to cast into the Brook of Kidron outside. ¹⁷ And Hezekiah began on the first day, on the new moon of the first month, to purify, and on the eighth day of the month they entered into the temple of the Lord. And they purified the house of the Lord in eight days. And on the thirteenth day of the first month they finished the work. ¹⁸ And they went in to King Hezekiah, and said, We have purified all the things in the house of the Lord, the altar of whole burnt offering, and its vessels, and the table of showbread, and its vessels; ¹⁹ and all the vessels which King Ahaz polluted in his reign, in his apostasy, we have prepared and purified; behold, they are before the altar of the Lord. ²⁰ And King Hezekiah rose early in the morning, and gathered the chief men of the city, and went up to the house of the Lord. ²¹ And he brought seven calves, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven kids of goats for a sin-offering, for the kingdom, and for the holy things, and for Israel. And he told the priests, the sons of Aaron, to go up to the altar of the Lord. ²² And they killed the calves, and the priests received the blood, and poured it on the altar. And they killed the rams, and poured the blood upon the altar. Also they killed the lambs, and poured the blood on the altar. ²³ And they brought the goats for a sin offering before the king and the congregation, and laid their hands upon them. ²⁴ And the priests killed them, and offered their blood as a propitiation on the altar; and they made atonement for all Israel; for the king said, The whole burnt offering, and the sin offering are for all Israel. ²⁵ And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, and lutes, and harps, according to the commandment of King David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet; for by the commandment of the Lord the order was in the hand of the prophets. ²⁶ And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. ²⁷ And Hezekiah told them to offer up the whole burnt offering on the altar. And when they began to offer the whole burnt offering, they began to sing to the Lord, and the trumpets accompanied the instruments of David king of Israel. ²⁸ And all the congregation worshipped, and the psalm-singers were singing, and the trumpets sounding, until the whole burnt sacrifice had been completely offered. ²⁹ And when they had done offering it, the king and all that were present bowed down and worshipped. ³⁰ And King Hezekiah and the princes told the Levites to sing hymns to the Lord in the words of David, and of Asaph the prophet. And they sang hymns with gladness, and fell down and worshipped. ³¹ Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now that you have consecrated yourselves to the Lord, bring near and offer sacrifices of praise in the house of the Lord. And the congregation brought sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the Lord; and everyone who was ready in his heart brought whole burnt offerings. ³² And the number of the whole burnt offerings which the congregation brought, was seventy calves, a hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a whole burnt offering to the Lord.

³³ And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in a high place among the tombs of the sons of David. And all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem gave him glory and honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

¹ And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king over Jerusalem in the place of his father. ² Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Amital, daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done. And Pharaoh Necho bound him in Diblath in the land of Emath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem. ³ And the king brought him over to Egypt, and imposed a tribute on the land, a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. ⁴ And Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim the son of Josiah king over Judah in the place of his father Josiah, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Pharaoh Necho took his brother Jehoahaz and brought him into Egypt, and he died there; but he had given the silver and gold to Pharaoh. At that time the land began to be taxed to give the money at the command of Pharaoh; and everyone as he could borrowed the silver and the gold of the people of the land, to give to Pharaoh Necho. ⁵ Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Zechora, daughter of Neriah of Ramah. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers did. In his days came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon into the land, and he served him three years, and then revolted from him. And the Lord sent against them the Chaldeans, and plundering parties of Syrians, and plundering parties of the Moabites, and of the children of Ammon, and of Samaria. But after this they departed, according to the word of the Lord by the hand of His servants the prophets. Nevertheless the wrath of the Lord was upon Judah, so that they should be removed from His presence, because of the sins of Manasseh in all that he did, and for the innocent blood which Jehoiakim shed, for he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; yet the Lord would not utterly destroy them. ⁶ And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him with bronze fetters, and carried him away to Babylon. ⁷ And he carried away a part of the vessels of the house of the Lord to Babylon, and put them in his temple in Babylon. ⁸ And the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, behold, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And Jehoiakim slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers; and Jeconiah his son reigned in his place.

¹⁰ And at the turn of the year, King Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the precious vessels of the house of the Lord, and made Zedekiah his father's brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

²⁰ And he carried away the remnant to Babylon; and they were servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of the Medes,

¹ Now in the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of the Persians, and he issued a proclamation through all his kingdom, and that in writing, saying,

² Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brothers, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer upon it whole burnt offerings, according to the things that were written in the law of Moses the man of God.

² Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jehozadak rose up, and began to build the house of God that was in Jerusalem, and with them were the prophets of God assisting them.

¹ Now these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

¹³ But as when terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night, ¹⁴ horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake. ¹⁵ And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered. ¹⁶ I arose and perceived it not. I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying,

⁴ For who shall be pure from uncleanness? Not even one;

¹⁴ For who, being a mortal, is such that he shall be blameless? Or who that is born of a woman, that he should be just?

¹⁵ sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, while sleeping on the bed), ¹⁶ then He opens the understanding of men: He scares them with such fearful visions; ¹⁷ to turn a man from unrighteousness, and He delivers his body from a fall.

⁸ Good and upright is the Lord; therefore will He instruct sinners in the way. ⁹ The meek will He guide in judgment; the meek will He teach His ways.

⁷ The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our helper. Pause.

⁶ For a Child is born to us, and a Son is given to us, whose government is upon His shoulder; and His name is called the Messenger of great counsel; for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to Him. ⁷ His government shall be great, and of His peace there is no end; it shall be upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to establish it, and to support it with judgment and with righteousness, from this time forward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall perform this.

And now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? ⁶ Behold, you trust on this bruised staff of reed, on Egypt; as soon as a man leans upon it, it shall go into his hand, and pierce it; so is Pharaoh king of Egypt and all that trust in him. ⁷ But if you say, We trust in the Lord our God; ⁸ yet now make an agreement with my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you shall be able to set riders upon them. ⁹ And how can you then turn to the face of the satraps? They that trust on the Egyptians for horse and rider are our servants. ¹⁰ And now, Have we come up against this land to fight against it without the Lord? Has he not sent me to the men that sit on the wall, that they may eat dung, and drink their water together with you? ¹³ And Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language, and said, Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians: ¹⁴ Thus says the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you with words; he will not be able to deliver you. ¹⁵ And let not Hezekiah say to you, That God will deliver you, and this city will not at all be delivered into the hand of the king of the Assyrians. ¹⁶ Hearken not to Hezekiah; thus says the king of the Assyrians: If you wish to be blessed, come out to me; and you shall all eat of his own vine and his own fig trees, and you shall drink water out of your own cisterns; ¹⁷ until I come and take you to a land, like your own land, a land of grain and wine, and bread and vineyards. ¹⁸ Let not Hezekiah deceive you, saying, God will deliver you. Have the gods of the nations delivered each one his own land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians? ¹⁹ Where is the god of Hamath, and Arpad? And where is the god of Sepharvaim? Know then, and see, that your forsaking Me has been bitter to you, says the Lord your God; and I have taken no pleasure in you, says the Lord your God. ²⁰ For of old you have broken your yoke, and plucked asunder your bands; and you have said, I will not serve You, but will go upon every high hill, and under every shady tree, there will I indulge in my fornication. ²¹ Yet I planted you a fruitful vine, entirely of the right sort — how are you a strange vine turned to bitterness! ²² Though you should wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, still you are stained by your iniquities before Me, says the Lord. ²³ How will you say, I am not polluted, and have not gone after Baal? ⁶⁹ and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, ⁷⁰ as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, who have been since the world began,

²² And all were bearing witness to Him, and were marveling at the gracious words which came out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?"

⁷ nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, "In Isaac your seed shall be called." ⁸ That is, those who are the children of the flesh, are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. ⁹ For this is the word of promise: "At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son." ¹⁰ And not only this, but also Rebecca having conception from one man, our father Isaac; ¹¹ for the children not yet being born, nor having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might abide, not of works but of Him who calls, ¹² it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." ¹³ As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

¹⁹ that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not reckoning their transgressions to them, and committing to us the word of this reconciliation.

¹⁶ Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises spoken. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.

⁴ But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, ⁵ so that He might redeem those under the law, so that we might receive the adoption.

²⁵ Husbands, love your own wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, ²⁶ in order that He might sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing of water by the word, ²⁷ that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and blameless.

²⁰ and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of His cross. ²¹ And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled ²² in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach before Him-- ²³ if indeed you continue in the faith, having been founded and firm and not drifting away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was proclaimed to all creation under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.

¹⁶ And confessedly, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and was received up in glory.

¹ My little children, these things I write to you, that you may not sin. And if someone should sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. ² And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only concerning ours, but also concerning those of the whole world.

⁵ And you know that He appeared that He might take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
