¹ But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn; now they reprove me in their turn, whose fathers I set at nought; whom I did not deem worthy to be with my shepherd dogs.

²³ And he went up there to Bethel. And as he was going up by the road, there came up also little children from the city, and mocked him, and said to him, Go up, baldhead, go up.

⁴ For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery.

¹³ My brothers have stood far from me; they have recognized strangers rather than me: and my friends have become pitiless. ¹⁴ My relatives have not acknowledged me, and they that knew my name have forgotten me. ¹⁵ As for my household, and my maidservants, I was a stranger before them. ¹⁶ I called my servant, but he gives no answer; and my mouth begged him. ¹⁷ And I besought my wife, and earnestly begged the sons of my concubines. ¹⁸ But they rejected me forever; whenever I rise up, they speak against me. ¹⁹ They that saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me.

⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and all the old men stood up. ⁹ And the great men ceased speaking, and laid their finger on their mouth. ¹⁰ And they that heard me blessed me, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.

¹⁵ Yet they rejoiced against me, and plagues were plentifully brought against me, and I knew it not; they were scattered, but repented not. ¹⁶ They tempted me, they sneered at me most contemptuously, they gnashed their teeth upon me.

¹² Those that sit in the gate talked against me, and those that drank wine sang against me.

⁵ And the people shall fall, man upon man, and every man upon his neighbor; the child shall insult the elder man, and the base toward the honorable.

⁶⁵ Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the attendants were striking Him with slaps to the face.

¹⁷ And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, and they put it around His head, ¹⁸ and they began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" ¹⁹ And they were striking His head with a reed and were spitting on Him; and bowing the knee, they mockingly worshipped Him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple, and dressed Him in His own clothing. And led Him out so that they might crucify Him.

¹⁴ said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, on the charge of misleading the people. And indeed, when I examined Him in your presence, I found no guilt in this Man in the matters which you bring as charges against Him;

¹⁸ But they all cried out together, saying, "Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas"--

³⁵ And the people stood, observing. And the rulers with them also were sneering, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the elect of God."

³⁹ Then one of the evildoers who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us."

⁵ And the Jews who did not believe took some wicked men from the marketplace, and forming a mob, they threw the city into disorder, and came upon the house of Jason, and sought to bring them to the people.

¹² There said a certain one of them, a prophet of their own, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons."
